The constantly evolving international dream-folk band – The Loafing Heroes – are recording a special new album of eleven new haunting songs in July 2018. This unique music project is based in Lisbon, with musicians contributing from Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Zimbabwe, Germany and the USA. It has been quite a journey so far to say the least which began in Denmark many years ago, and then we went on to write and record albums in Berlin and Lisbon in fine-tuning our dream-folk-walkabout sound and vision. After the success of our last album The Baron in the Trees in 2016 and playing in festivals such as NOS Alive and Festival Silêncio and going on three mini-tours in Ireland, we hibernated over the last six months in order to work on new directions and write new songs.
We are now ready to embark on a new adventure by recording our sixth album this summer. But in order for this album to get made it won’t happen without your help, and in return we promise to make a beautiful album and send one to you. The funding goal is €5000 - which will all go towards the recording, mixing (€1800) and mastering (€500) of the album, the renting of the studio (€1200), and album design and printing of the product (€1500). We will record the album on 9-19 July at UFO Studios in the heart of Berlin with our maestro producer Tadklimp who has already recorded three of our albums (The Baron in the Trees, Planets and Chula), and has also produced innovative albums by Berlin-based bands such as Fenster, Saroos, Slow Steve and Jason&Theodor.
Bartholomew Ryan from Ireland continues to lead the project, injecting and fusing Celtic soul with troubadour songwriting with melancholic tropicalia energy. Each song on the album has a one-word title and together they form a collective of introspective yet universal songs about mortality, dreams, memories, the imagination, and the attempt to get closer to the mysteries of this planet which includes all animate and inanimate things.
The album opens with the track Incantation which is a nod to an ancient Irish poem by the poet Amergin in the mythical creation and dreaming up of Ireland. Two of the songs have Irish language titles: Sidhe – which can mean fairy or fairy-mound; and the instrumental track of alternative tuning, a raga of a kind, Ragaire – which means ‘night rambler’. There are new songwriting and lead vocal contributions from Giulia Gallina from Italy on three of the songs – in the pulsing, rhythmic track Wind, in the hypnotic and lush ballad Apollo, and in the dark, apocalyptic track Silence. Ryan delves into mutilated fairytale territory while maintaining strong melody in songs such as Stairs (which will be the first single from the album), Alchemy and Butterfly. With Intruder - perhaps the most danceable song on the record, the band creates a paradoxical combination of affirmative rhythmic music alongside devastating anti-colonialism lyrics. The final track, Forest, is a definitive conclusion to what may turn out to be The Loafing Heroes’ most mystical and ecological album in terms of vision as the song meanders its way from spoken word to passionate singing, diving into dreams through space and time and ecological thinking while accompanied by a rich texture and wave of sound.
There is experimentation in the arrangement and use of instruments with percussion, xylophone, guitars, concertina, piano and trumpet. And for the first time, we will use an autoharp (played by Giulia) and viola (played by Judith Retzlik from Germany) on the album. Also, Jaime McGill will fly in especially from Tennessee to play the evocative bass clarinet, thus continuing a trademark sound throughout all the Loafing Heroes albums. We are excited to get to work once again and fulfil the dream of making this album this summer!
