A card game where doctors treat the sick (and monstrous) and compete to become the newest partner on London's Harley Street.
Gothic Doctor is a card game for 2 to 5 players where players are doctors at a clinic on London’s medically-renowned Harley Street in the 1850s. You and your so-called-colleagues compete to earn the most money treating patients - the monsters from Gothic literature. But what cards will you draw? Ones that allow you to treat The Headless Horseman - or ones that will allow you hinder your opponents from doing the same? And would you rather treat Dr. Frankenstein or Mr. Hyde? Or just a lowly victim of vampire attack?
Why we need your help
We have this great idea, and we’ve done everything that we can afford to do. We’ve designed the gameplay, we’ve figured out the cards, we’ve balanced the treatments. But we can’t draw. Like, at all. So we need to hire someone to do that. Enter Jeff, who’s an amazing illustrator - but who, of course, needs to be paid. We’ve commissioned a few pieces to show you all what he can do - but we need the capital to get him to complete that work.
Also, this isn’t the only idea we have, and we’d like to set ourselves up to bring the world more misbegotten offspring from our diseased brains - so we need a few bucks to LLC up and pay for our website (meltdowngames.com). Other than that, though, we’re going to put all of the money we get from this campaign into making, producing, and distributing this first run of the game.
Finally, we of course need your help printing the game. Ad Magic has found us an excellent price per unit with a reliable printer - but we need your help to cover the costs of the initial run.
More about Gothic Doctor's Rules
If you'd like to know more about the rules for the game game, check out the rules page of our website. If you have questions about them, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, tweet at us (@meltdowngames), or leave a comment on the rules page.
More about the Kickstarter levels
Rather than have a lot of text on our Kickstarter page, we've put up a page on our website where you can see a lot more information about all of these levels. Check out this page on our website for many, many more details.
If you're interested in having the game signed by the co-creators and the artist, please add $3 to your order (unless you acted quickly enough to get the STAT! level).
And just to make it ultra clear and concise as to what you can get in each level, we give you: a Chart.
Here are three gameplay videos to give you a sense of the game. The first one is the first two and last two rounds from a game:
The next is setting up the table to play:
The last one is an entire, two person game. It's just under a half an hour, but it shows everything that happens, start to finish in a game:
Want to try Gothic Doctor for free?
To show you where we currently are with the game, we've put a prototype version of Gothic Doctor on our website. You can look it over online, download it, or even print it out and give it a try with your friends. And, you can leave us feedback so we can work to make the game even better.
Risks and challenges
Anyone who has been around Kickstarter knows what can go wrong and has a horror story about a time when the project that was supposed to be there in time for a friend’s birthday still isn’t going to be there for that friend’s next birthday. So, we know that things could go wrong with our project.
Naturally, something could happen to Jeff and the art could be delayed - but we’re encouraging him to lead a healthy and safe lifestyle...and he works fast.
We'll be printing with AdMagic.com, a company with a long track record of helping game designers make their ideas a reality, so they'll be able to guide us around the pitfalls of printing.
If you think there might be a risk we haven't considered, please let us know. We'd be happy to address it here.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
