Carry Forward an American Legacy with this History-Filled Bag
The You’ve Got Mail Bag is the perfect symbiosis of your unique style and desire to do good. It’s more than a stylish carrying device; it’s a vehicle for change.
The Perfect Combination of Style and Purpose
Your style is more than just what you wear; it’s a statement of who you are.
Your ideal bag melds these principles into one perfect package that protects what’s important to you and embodies what inspires you. Co-designed by Hearts and TerraCycle, the You’ve Got Mail Bag is the fusion of your fashionable and professional goals.
The You’ve Got Mail Bag comes with a:
·Cool back story – decommissioned US Postal Service bags and seatbelt parts
·Powerful environmental impact – upcycled local materials that reduce landfill waste and carbon emissions
·Responsible social effect – stimulating sustainable economies through fair trade American labor
·And a whole lot of one-of-a-kind style – each mail bag is unique so no You’ve Got Mail Bag is alike.
Save Resources and Reduce Waste
Each soulful bag begins with the rescue of still-usable - and stylish - items from the landfill. That’s great news for everyone since 85% of all textiles tossed in the US end up at the dump, taking up 5% of the total space in American landfills.[i] Given that landfill maintenance costs each American $75 annually, it’s in our best interest to find ways to upcycle materials instead.[ii]
The You’ve Got Mail Bag combines decommissioned USPS mail bags with seatbelt straps and buckles pulled from old vehicles. Though upcycled, these durable and highly functional materials offer rugged, long-lasting practicality.
Even the interior of each bag uses upcycled ultrasuede remnant scraps from factory closeouts. Each laptop bag keeps one pound of waste out of landfills, . To date, TerraCycle has diverted nearly 5 tons of USPS mail bags from landfills all over the country. Additionally, all materials are locally sourced, minimizing the carbon impact.
Fair Trade and Made in the USA
The ethical nature of the You’ve Got Mail Bags doesn’t stop with the eco materials; it also extends to local job creation! For starters, these upcycled bags contribute to the growth of the US recycling industry, which provides up to 60 times more jobs than the landfill sector.[iii]
The You’ve Got Mail Bag bucks the offshoring trend that has caused massive American job losses in recent years. Each handmade bag fights outsourcing by employing US artisans who receive fair compensation for their time and talents. You can support this project with confidence, knowing that your purchase fuels a local sustainable economic system.
This one-of-a-kind multifunctional bag is sized (15”L x 11”H 1”D) to be used as a laptop bag, a file carrier, or a student portfolio. It’s designed with one main compartment (which is softly cushioned and zips shut to protect your treasured possessions) and two small pockets. The medium-sized zippered pocket (10” x 8”) is perfect for your iPod, wallet, or cell phone. The smaller zippered pocket (4” x 5.5”) can be used for a thumb drive, lip gloss, or headphones.
Carry the You’ve Got Mail Bag with the double handles at the top, or connect the longer, adjustable seat belt strap to sling it over your shoulder. Each bag is finished with a grommet pocket perfect for carrying your computer charger These grommets were once used to close the mail bags and have been repurposed to add historic detailing. As a finishing touch, each bag features graphics from the original mail bag for a true first class look.
The Legacy of USPS Mail Bags
If you lean in close enough, you may hear whispers of the stories told by the countless letters and cards once carried in your You’ve Got Mail Bag. A passionate exchange between lovers separated by war; a tale of triumph offered from one colleague to another; a child’s holiday gift wishes. If nothing else, you might catch the faint hint of dusty mail.
For over 230 years, the United States Postal Service has guaranteed that every person in the US holds the right to secure, affordable and efficient mail service. It all started with one man transporting one bag full of letters and packages across the country.
Today, the USPS uses thousands of cloth mail bags to ensure our correspondence gets from home to points around the world. Each mail bag we upcycle into You’ve Got Mail Bags was carried daily for over 20 years by USPS. When you take ownership of one of these bags, you extend the life of the material for many years to come.
Where each sack has travelled, no one really knows. It’s a mystery that will drive you to love your bag in ways you may not yet imagine.
Current Project Status
Far from infancy, this project is ready for production. The bags have been designed. The supply chain for the upcycled materials is in place. The artisans are ready and awaiting the go-ahead. Both Hearts and TerraCycle have a proven distribution channel with customers who are excited about ethical fashion like the You’ve Got Mail Bag.
That leaves only the final barrier: funding to re-infuse life into materials that are excited to be useful again. The money raised through this Kickstarter campaign will be used to start ethical production of the USPS Laptop Bags. Once the campaign has reached the fully funded stage, we’ll be ready to offer the bags for retail, with an estimated price tag of $148.
