"I think of you whenever I travel - your toiletries' bag comes with me on every trip" - Vivienne, London UK
"Kim, every single time I go to the grocery store someone asks me where I got my bags" - Rene, Seattle US
I'm a designer and my dream to create a range of wonderfully vibrant and distinctive practical bags and home accessories has been a mission for many years. Inspired by the magic of the natural world, I have enjoyed creating fabric designs with charm and style. Everyone has their own need for a particular shape or size of bag but after communicating with my customers, I am proud to present a broad range that offers something for everyone.
Why this campaign?
Starting small can be tough. You need to print fabric and manufacture a couple of products to see if people with like them and want to buy them. But printworks require minimum quantity orders to make production worthwhile. Printing smaller quantities is way more expensive, as is manufacturing and distribution.
Since the first Kimthings' bags hit the shelves 10 years ago every bag has been snapped up. I tested the market and my products met the challenge. At first, I had my fabric digitally printed. My costs were high but it was the only way I could see if my designs would appeal. I was designing the fabric and making my products and even when I outsourced the sewing I couldn't keep up with demand. I realized there are no half measures in this industry. Graduating from small cottage industry "sew-it-yourself" to viable production requires much more.
Fast forward to the next step - here's where YOU come in
I have formed a partnership with two experienced businessmen, each bringing specialized skills of business, distribution and manufacturing. This collaborative project has been in the works for 2 years - we have been assessing our market, preparing prototypes and business plans, aligning factories and distribution networks and we are now ready to go wholesale!
What is crowd funding?
Crowd funding is a platform to bring many small investors together to fund a project that would otherwise be way too expensive for one or even a few people to fund. Contributions from as little as $10 to as much as $450 or more can be made by individual people, with other options in between. For each level of contribution there is a reward that you will get if the campaign is successfully funded. So, if you wish to help us raise our target funding goal you can contribute any amount you wish and you will be able to select a reward for the level you choose (see the list on the right). You will be asked to give your credit card details. At the end of the campaign period if, AND ONLY IF, our goal has been reached, your credit card will be charged with the amount you offered to contribute. If we do not reach our goal the campaign will close with no financial obligation to you.
Some points to note
WE WILL COVER THE SHIPPING COSTS. You will be responsible for any taxes and duties.
The reward levels are shown on the right of the screen. Once you have selected the level you wish to fund, we have an extra 'thank you' for you:
For orders placed totaling over $100 you will receive a complimentary makeup bag
For orders placed totaling over $250 you will receive a complimentary tote bag as well
For orders placed totaling over $400 you will receive a complimentary messenger bag as well
Once the campaign is successful you will be able to select your reward/s in any of the following fabric choices below. (They can be all in the same fabrics or each one different - your choice.)
The rewards are as follows:
I have always loved drawing and sketching and I filled many a book with musings inspired by life around me. I saw the world through my children's eyes, observing life at ground level, so that many of my designs are of insects, birds and plants. My designs and colors give a nod to my South African beginnings.
I have a degree in art and taught myself fabric design before attending St Martin's College of Art in London, UK. I sketch all my designs by hand and paint the black lines with acrylics. Painting keeps me connected to the design and gives the lines more character before finishing them on the computer.
When I began my enterprise, at the proverbial kitchen table, I did everything: designed the fabric, had it printed (and some laminated), designed the product range and product patterns, sewed, labelled AND went out to sell through stores, trade shows in New York and Los Angeles and eventually through a rep. This process was greulling but worthwhile in every respect. I learned hands-on what every stage of the production entailed and most importantly, I learned that I couldn't succeed at this business if I did everything myself. Hence the creation of the partnership I described above. It is a perfectly balanced solution, allowing me time to focus on the design development while knowing that the production, marketing and distribution elements are reliably taken care of. The other partners have extensive experience in the industry and Kimthings will benefit from their expertise and manufacturing, and financial knowledge.
A huge thank you to family and friends who have given opinions, advice, encouragement and support over the years! Thanks also to Ericsson San Pablo Chu and his models for the excellent video.
Risks and challenges
Right now our fabrics are designed and proofed, samples have been made and are ready for printing. The product prototypes require minor modifications. Once our project is funded we need to finalize design details before final production. This will probably require signing off on one or two more prototype samples for the more complicated items but to date we have not had any cause for concern with the factory we will be using.
Within the partnership we have considerable expertise in business, manufacturing, sales and design. However, even with all the best laid plans, most ventures experience unanticipated hiccups and delays. We will give regular progress updates and be transparent about any issues that arise. We firmly believe that if we can achieve our goal in funding, anything is possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
