Though we've reached our initial goal of $300, we hope to raise a total of $500 through Kickstarter for sculptures and add-ons.
Hi, I'm Cameron. In 2010, I went to Maker Faire Bay Area and saw Arc Attack. The experience inspired me to create something with high voltage electricity. In 2011, I got a Spark Gap Tesla Coil kit for my birthday and Christmas present. I have always loved art and sculpture, and recently I became inspired by light painting. I built my tesla coil and I started making sculptures. Most of them were fused glass pieces or wire sculptures I was experimenting with to see what effects the coil would produce in and around the pieces. When the young makers program for Maker Faire came around, I decided to do something like Arc Attack, and make an audio modulated tesla coil. I shared this idea with my fellow club members at BATEC and they offered to help. We make up a team of musicians, electrical designers, software designers, and aesthetics designers. My mom, Carla Mira is the Club Manager and we have five parents involved total in making our club run.
Our project goal is to build an Audio Modulated Full-Bridge Solid State Tesla Coil (SSTC) for research in High Voltage Sculpture and music. Our mediums for these sculptures are glass, metal, & electronics. The songs that we intend to play include Angry Birds, Super Mario, Doctor Who, Axel F, For Elise, Smoke on the Water, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, among others.
What is BATEC?
BATEC stands for Bay Area Teen Electro Club. We are a teen electronics club in Concord, CA. Our mission is to provide members with the knowledge to work with todays technology from the DIY point of view. To show how to Design, build, & mod technology from today and the past. Also to provide an encouraging, inspiring, & cool atmosphere.
Where is the funding going?
We have had some funding from a friend, which we used to order some of the parts and tools. However, we need your help! If we get $300 it will all go to the coils construction. If we get $400 we can add features like a count down timer, $500 and up we will have money to buy more tools and materials for High Voltage sculptures, add more features like a safety siren, instruments, and tools to make more music, as well as the coil.
We are hoping to be funded more than $500 and if funded, we will be displaying this coil at the Bay Area Maker Faire 2012 along with sculptures, and music for it. This community is in control of how cool of an experience the coil and artwork is!
