Tistow follows the story of Jack, a young lad from the far and tribal north, as he attempts to integrate into the vast and intimidating industrial city of Tistow. With Tistow rapidly heading to war, Jack finds himself alone and exposed to the city’s dark underworld, led by the enigmatic gang leader known only as Loksley.
But Jack has a secret; blessed by the spirit-like Primals he has the ability to assume animal forms, a power that could easily be abused should that knowledge fall into unscrupulous hands. Unsure who to trust and with friends in short supply, Jack must learn quickly to keep his head above the treacherous waters of the River Effra.
Tistow has been a concept for some time and, with Chapter 1 now soon to be completed and being rolled out on our website, we feel now is a good time to commit the story to print.
A successful Kickstarter will allow us to print 100 copies of Chapter 1 and any left-over crowns will help print additional copies, push onwards with Chapter 2 and produce additional merchandise including prints and stickers that have shown to be popular with fans.
The beginning of the comic can be read on our website for free!
If you'd like to see more, you can find our gallery here!
The 1st Chapter is 44 pages long, including 32 pages of the comic and 12 pages of supporting content. The cover is a soft cover and for stitching we had the option to include a spine, so instead of saddle stitching the comic is perfect bound.
For those who'd like a custom sketch commission to go with their book, we've included an option for that too! You can either choose the subject or get a Tistow themed illustration.
If you'd like a specific print reward from any of the tiers or more of one you've already got to share with your friends, you can do so by choosing one of the tiers that suits your budget and adding the following to that pledge. Let me know which one you're after and I'll add a note (alternatively, I'll contact you at the end of the campaign).
The 3 Bookmarks - (double sided): £8
Ratty Sticker Sheet - (6 stickers) £4
Guest print - (1): £8 (both) £15
Additional copies of the comic - £12 + postage (contact me and I'll calculate the cost as this depends on your location)
Budget is based on printing 100 books. Fees include Kickstarter's fees. The wiggle room has been added as a safety net in the event of any unexpected costs.
We smashed the first Stretch Goal! These rewards have now been made available as addons. A rat sticker sheet that contains 6 stickers in total and a bookmark of our two urchins that you will get to meet in the 1st Chapter.
The bookmark & sticker sheet has been added into all the tier rewards (Blacksmith's Buffet & higher) that include our previous 2 bookmarks for no additional cost.
Unlocked on 5th of November. We got through another stretch goal! This time it's a comic! The story has been added to all tiers that include the original PDF as well as the physical copy, for no extra cost. We can't give you the exact page count yet, but we're looking at around 6 + some promotional art.
We're introducing a short story about the day when Jack left on his journey to Tistow. It'll be inked by me and coloured by Mikael Hankonen. We've previously worked together on projects such as Odie and Small Trolls.
Hi! I'm Elli, a freelance illustrator from Finland currently living in the south of England. I created Tistow out of my love for folklore and Victorian history and I wanted to draw a comic that was both entertaining and historically informative. Tistow is a work of fiction but much of what occurs in the book is based on historical fact.
I’m fanatical about rats, something that will become obvious in Tistow. I have kept pet rats for several years and I still love everything about them but their short lifespans. I have gradually been collecting books on Victorian London, from Mayhew and Dickens to Goodman and Pratchett and wish I could spend more times rummaging around dusty old bookshops. Like any good Brit, I enjoy a nice cup of tea.
Risks and challenges
Our printer of choice (Comic Printing UK) is well recommended and we trust them to deliver a quality product on time. We're ordering a proof copy and this adds a couple of extra days to the deadline.
The biggest challenge will be shipping the books as it's something we've never done before. However, we've got plenty of friends with experience in packing and shipping who'll be able to give us a hand should it come to that.
For sketch commissions, your package is likely going to be sent a little later than the rest, so extra time has been added to the deadline again to be on the safe side.
We will make sure to keep you updated on progress and any potential hiccups.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
