About

About the Project

In this documentary we wish to dispel the typical stereotypes people have of the homeless. The homeless are homeless for a variety of reasons, just as they represent a variety of backgrounds and situations. 'That could have been me,' will be a major idea the viewer should get from watching Shelter. Life's hardships occur to everyone, but in many instances they manage to derail the lives of our most vulnerable. It doesn't take much, and we believe that many in our society do not realize how easy it is to find oneself homeless. 'Seven out of ten Americans are one paycheck from being homeless.' We believe that a large portion of American society has alienated and placed self-imposed-blame onto the homeless. We would like this film to be part of a process of replacing that alienation and blame with humaneness and connectivity.

How we see the story unfolding

A typical sequence will illustrate each homeless interviewee as they go about a typical day, as well as allow him or her to tell their story of homelessness, whether it is how they became homeless or how they have been treated as a homeless person. We are seeking to locate a variety of people representing a variety of homeless situations. These stories will be coupled with commentary by Tucson community experts on homelessness. The homeless subjects will be purposefully given a majority of the the speaking time in the film, prioritizing their own story and voice.

We are scheduled to shoot beginning in November and will finish principal shooting in late December 2013!

Estimated run time 53 minutes

Contributors for Production Phase

Bobby Burns, Executive Producer – Author of SHELTER: One Man’s Journey from Homelessness to Hope. In the late 1990’s Bobby was a Navy Veteran and teacher when he found himself homeless in Tucson. Out of his experience came a book, and an inspirational book and shelter tour around the United States. Remarkably, the nine-city-tour was via Greyhound Bus! Bobby is now currently a Student Services Advanced Specialist at Pima Community College in Tucson.

Tina Huerta (SurealWorks), Producer / Editor – Tina has been an active award winning Tucson filmmaker since 2005. Not 2B Toyed With not only received multiple awards and viewings in 19 countries, but managed to be displayed as an exceptional example in an Arizona International Film Festival panel. Rita of the Sky, a documentary revealing the hardship endured by a 50-year-old woman speaking her native language as she journeyed over 1,000 miles to Kansas, only to be locked up in a mental institution for 10 years because no one recognized her speech, is an example of Tina’s artistry as a compositional editor.

Steev Hise (Liminal Communications) – Director - Steev is a filmmaker, activist, and artist based in Tucson. His work encompasses documentary, experimental narrative film, video collage, and multimedia. Previous documentary work includes a film about the murdered women of Ciudad Juárez (On The Edge); Wild Versus Wall, created with the Sierra Club, examining the environmental effect of the border wall, and Radical Resources, a look at a now-defunct anarchist community center in Tucson.

Pan Left Productions - Serving as fiscal sponsor and advisory support for “Shelter,” Pan Left is a non-profit video production collective that puts the tools of film and video into the hands of people who are not equally represented in the mainstream media, provides production services to allied, progressive non-profits, and hosts neighborhood and community events that showcase works by independent artists

Patrick McArdle (Digital Downtown Darkroom) - 2nd Camera, Photography

Rogelio Camarillo (Artistic Sound & Video) - Production Sound Mixer

Scott Griessel (Creatista) – Additional Photography

Scott Jaxon – Graphics and Web Design

Jean Jessup - Production Accountant

Special Note - 3 on our crew have experienced homelessness.

Where Your Money Goes - Production

A professionally-produced film can be costly to make, but our aim is for high production values in order to gain the widest audience.

- All principal shooting with a 4 - 6 person crew 71%

- Food, travel, and equipment expendables (most equipment has been generously donated by crew, which would have cost $14K) 16%

- Location and Insurance costs and all of the lovely overhead associated with production including bookkeeping and sales tax. 13%

Stretch Goals

Note that this campaign is to fund the production of the film. We will engage in a new fundraising effort to finance post-production this winter. If we reach our initial goal with this campaign, we’ll apply any extra funds raised to this second round, and to repay some participants for time donated during pre-production.

Risks and challenges

There are a variety of possible difficulties that we foresee and are preparing for.

First, we have a tight schedule for principal shooting, which will start at the
beginning of November and end in the last week of December, 2013. This plan is due to two annual events that happen every year and are important to the homeless community and those that serve them - The Homeless Memorial and Thanksgiving. However, these 2 dates are the only strict times we’re committed too, and if necessary we can push production further into the winter, as our crew members all have flexible schedules and are committed to the project.

As with almost any documentary, it’s a concern that real people, even those with interesting stories, don’t always end up being personalities that work well in front of a camera, or have schedules compatible with the shooting plan. We’ll avoid problems by finding plenty of extra potential subjects and pre-interviewing them thoroughly. Out of that pool of possibilities, we’ll arrive at a final short list of participants that are compatible and dependable.

Filming while shadowing the homeless, especially into the desert at times, may be physically difficult, which is why we have a small and able crew. We’ll be able to travel light and adapt to whatever happens as we following our subjects during whatever daily routine they have.
