Every time I tell someone what I'm doing this year, they say they've never heard of anyone doing anything like it. And at this point I'm pretty sure no one has.
It's kind of a crazy idea: going on the road for 10 months, spending a whole month in each of ten towns... it's not what the old business model would call efficient. Ask most musicians - what we do when we tour is drive, arrive, soundcheck, eat, play the gig, maybe have a drink with some fans, and then hit the hotel. Then we drive again.
There's not much time for getting to know anyone, or seeing the cities where we play.
I didn't want to do it the normal way. I figured, if I'm going to spend the rest of my life traveling around this country playing music, I want to actually get to know it. I want to have friends in these towns, I want to have a favorite coffee shop, I want to have hiked up a mountain with the bartender at the venue where I played - I want to actually connect. Not just pass through. Not just gloss over. I've never been interested in the one-night stand.
New Year's eve, I left my home of Austin, TX. By the end of the year, I will have truly lived in 10 different towns across this country. In every city I've made amazing friends, put together a local band, played live gigs, and written and recorded a new song.
I knew this 10-town tour and record were going to be a challenge to fund. But that wasn't going to stop me. I've managed to make some amazing recordings, starting with the one at Tucson's Wavelab Studios with a few of the guys from Calexico, and most recently, a Loretta-like old country song in Nashville with Chris Scruggs, Kenny Vaughan, Mike Bub, and Buddy Spicher.
But now I need some help. I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel, as they say, and I need to raise the money to finish this album.
That's where you come in. I've created some incentives to encourage you to help out. I think this feels kind of like internet dating. A little awkward, but I've been told it can have great results. :)
Thanks for visiting my Kickstarter page, and know that anything you contribute will help me record the final songs, mix, master, and manufacture the album.
