About this project
LOFT is a studio space open to the arts and science community. We grow organic heirloom vegetables and fresh tilapia fish. Our immediate goal is to prove that small scale aquaponic gardening systems are not only possible in, but key to our sustainable use of urban environments. We want to one day be responsible for the transformation of Long Island City rooftops. We want to change them from drab weather resistant heat sinks to sustainable aquaponic garden environments. We will do so by demonstrating to various property owners and like minded members of local residential boards that aquaponic gardening is the only sustainable way to feed New York's growing population. As foreign and domestic oil reserves dwindle and threaten to drive up the price of imported produce, we understand the importance of and place for established ecosystems near to our places of residence.
All funds raised will go toward the expansion of our aquaponic systems, promotion and production of LOFT:LIC goods and services, and licenses to implement these systems on rooftops around Long Island City. The project officially began on January 1st, 2012. We have initiated the first aquaculture tank on this day, and expect that by February the number of tanks may as much as triple. Aquaponics is a complex yet exciting science that involves maintaining an environment conducive to the production of vegetables based on the overall health of the fish and other organisms within the system.
We are currently a two person operation and receive assistance in construction from friends and family.
