Emergence is a story of rebirth into a self that loves and embraces both the feminine and masculine, and recognizes that the path to wholeness lies in allowing the sacred feminine to dance once more.
Why this project, why now? We are in the middle of a national conversation about how we want to be as a society. A new awareness is rising out of the "me too" movement and more and more discussion about "toxic masculinity". This project is another piece of that discussion that invites all of us to learn more about all aspects of ourselves and honor, love and celebrate them. For far too long anything "feminine" has been degraded, excluded, persecuted and even demonized. Feminine and by extension, women have been seen as the "other" and inferior leading to the situation we find ourselves in today. By giving to this project you are contributing to this conversation and the age old tradition of supporting the arts which so often pushes us as a society at large to face difficult realities.
How will my money help? Amethystone has a successful history of DIY projects (concerts and masquerade balls) but this is by far the most ambitious and we need your help! By contributing to this project you are providing a valuable resource and some peace of mind as there are many expenses associated with this project. Our kickstarter goal will cover the bare minimum expenses which are: rental of Arts West, sound engineering (kind of important for a rock opera!), programs, posters/postcards/facebook ads, costumes, and copies of sheet music for choir members.
Money raised beyond our goal will enable the dancers and musicians who are giving of their time and energy without payment (including Amethystone), to receive some sort of compensation. Additionally, a professional video and audio recording is in the works enabling Amethystone to share this piece in the future and have for promotional purposes which is ultra-important in these days of you-tube and Instagram (I'm showing my age, I know).
What makes this program special? This production is bringing together nearly 40 other singers and dancers from the Athens area! This project will bring into fruition a project that Megan Cameron began working on a decade ago drawing inspiration from "Dance of the Dissident Daughter" written by Sue Monk Kidd. After a 2009 collaboration with Calliope, Megan knew she wanted to do more with an all female choir and Amethystone.
As part of Emergence, Missy led 3 movement workshops called "Movement & Meditation" designed to help participants gain a deeper sense of self through movement. Several of these participants will be performing in the production.
Emergence is collaborating with guest artists, Calliope Feminist Chorus, members of the SE Ohio Resistance Choir, mezzo-soprano Melissa Brobeck and an ensemble of dancers choreographed by Missy Whaley including fire spinner Shelly Riggs. For this performance Megan has written 3-4 part choral arrangements of some of Amethystone's songs including a crowd favorite "Faery Song" and a song that had been an instrumental piece for years "Rise Up".
Risks and challenges
Having the concert in the middle of February has inherent risks. The positive aspect of a mid-winter performance is not much else is going on and people are often feeling cabin fever. However, inclement weather is a risk and could result in delaying the performance to a later date. This has already been discussed with Arts West and alternative dates will be discussed with all partners so that the show will go on.
Additionally we have several community sponsors that are helping bring this vision to life including:
