About

Bibbit is the solution to baby mealtime mess. It's a waterproof bib that covers your baby AND the highchair seat keeping both of them completely clean. Cleaning it up is a breeze because it is machine washable

Based on popular vote, the first style we are offering is the Arrows bib shown below.

Video: Benefits of Self-Feeding

Our Story

Our story started when Hayley discovered mold growing in the deep recesses of our high chair. Hayley tells it like this:

“I was exhausted, frustrated and not keeping up while trying hard to do all the things that research tells us are best for our babies. Spoon feeding would have reduced the mess but we wanted our baby to be able to eat with the family and to reap all of the long-term health benefits of self-feeding. I tried several bibs on our daughter, but found that I still had to launder her clothes and clean the high chair and cushion. Finally, I took some cloth diapering fabric (PUL), cut holes in it, and used a broken headphone cord as a drawstring to hold it onto our high chair. I then popped it onto my daughter who was sitting unsuspectingly in her high chair. She ate her meal happily. After the meal, my relief was palpable. I washed her hands and face and set her down to play. No change of clothes required. Without so much as wiping the high chair seat, I removed the makeshift bib, dumped the contents on the tray and threw it in the laundry grinning idiotically."

“Literally the next seven parents who saw my hole-y PUL invention exclaimed, “You have to market that!” Finally, Russell and I looked at each other and said, “Why don’t we give it sleeves and see where it goes?” Easier said than done. By design #11 I could not keep up with the work of pattern modification and sewing, and it was time for Russell to learn how to sew. I warned him, “Sewing is difficult, you will need a lot of practice to nail down techniques...” etc. An hour later, he was teaching me how to correctly calibrate the serger! Of course, as an engineer, he had to re-create the whole design in engineering drafting software. The long slug to prototype #23 entailed fashion-design help from our friend Katherina Stegerman and extensive testing of bibbit prototypes on high chairs at stores and friends’ houses.”

We are so thankful to all the friends who took bibbit prototypes home to try out and gave us honest and valuable feedback throughout the design process. The final version now works on virtually every model of high chair. The only one it didn’t work on was Phil & Teds Poppy High Chair because there is nothing for the straps to wrap around on the sides since the tray is mounted on a central post.

We are excited for other parents to save time on after-meal clean up!

Going Forward

Sewing bibbits individually was cost prohibitive. Therefore, we have been working with fabric and sewing factories to arrange for mass production. We are committed to delivering a product that can endure the extensive laundering and baby-battering that bibbit will encounter. After receiving samples from factories to assess their work, we have selected a fabric factory and a sewing factory that delivered a high quality product and that pay their workers a fair wage. In order to meet the minimum order quantities to make these affordable for parents we need cash for an order of 500 or more bibs.

Your investment will launch bibbit into production and distribution. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do! Thank you for checking out our project!

Stretch Goals

  • $20,000 CAD: New style of bib will be offered based on supporter preferences.
  • $40,000 CAD: Another new style will be offered.
  • $60,000 CAD: Another new style will be offered.

Risks and challenges

We expect that we might face two challenges: quality issues and manufacturing delays. We have already done an initial quality review of the fabric and the cut and sew. The fabric quality is good. However, the cut and sew still needs some minor changes from the sample we received. To ensure that quality is good, we will review more samples until everything is the way we want it before starting mass production.

There is not much that we can do about manufacturing delays. We've based our delivery estimates on times provided by the factories and will inform our backers if any delays arise.
