All the Details:
Inspired by a lifetime of playing with and collecting toys, I created a long-form art project celebrating action figures. For those of us who grew up planted in front of the television on Saturday mornings, it is easy to see why our childhood heroes are still present. From the multiplexes to the toy aisles, the stories and struggles that inspired us will never vanish. Souls of Toys brings back those memories, and reminds you of the lost toys, those vanished to yard sales, charity boxes, or simply never purchased.
My photography captures the toys in larger-than-life images, exploring the details we missed during all the imaginary battles. Over fifteen different toy lines are represented in this inaugural volume (including Star Wars, GI Joe, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bucky O’Hare, and more!), and over eighty individual figures are featured.
No matter how identical the toys were hanging on the pegs, once we played with them, fought them in crossover battles, they became distinct and ours. The chipped paint, lost weapons, names written in magic marker, and broken limbs gave the toys with souls. Anyone can have a Boba Fett, but no one else has mine, with the paint worn off the bottom of the helmet and the missile a little loose from trying to make it fire.
The toys photographed come from many places: my own childhood, flea markets, borrowed from friends, won on eBay, and rescued from thrift stores. Over 550 toy portraits have been captured and a new one will be shared daily on my website.
The photography and layout for the book is finished, and will be printed as soon funding is complete. Charles Forsman, an award-winning cartoonist, designed the front cover, and the book will be printed in the 9x6 landscape format. Your support will allow me to print the book, and order an ISBN number and bar-code, permitting it to be sold in stores and online. An pledge of $25 or higher guarantees a first printing along with a print.
