Portland has some of the most beautiful and mechanically fascinating bridges of any city in the US. In 2012 we created a bridge map that captured the spatial relationship of these bridges and their bold profiles unlike any other Portland bridge poster.
Now, we need to update that map. Portland is building a 12th bridge across the Willamette. Tilikum Crossing will open in 2015. To celebrate we are creating a special run of beautiful, hand-made maps for everyone who loves Portland and its bridges.
We will be as open about the process as possible, and make the resulting map freely available in digital form. This Kickstarter project will fund the update and redesign of the current map, as well as the ink, paper, letterpress plates, and time needed to create the hand printed maps.

- The Entire Collection
1. The Original Map
The original map may be short one bridge, but it is still quite nice.
2. The New Map
The new map will be redesigned with updated colors, text, and, of course, the new bridge.
3. The T-Shirt
Put the Willamette river right on your torso. The shirt shows all 12 bridges, and the Willamette River. Here is an early mock up.
4. Individual Bridge Cards
The individual bridge cards will show each bridge with a small locator map, and measure approximately 4" x 11". We will make four unique cards of bridges that have special architectural, engineering, or local significance.
5. Screen and Letterpress Maps
The combination screen/letterpress prints of the new map will be wonderful. We are really looking forward to the personal and tactile feeling that the manual printing methods will bring to the maps. You can get the standard map with the street grid, etc. Or you can get the "naked" version with only the simple river screen print and bridge sketch letterpress.
6. Screen and Letterpress Maps - Your Way
We are really excited about this next unique reward. We are letting you pick the color! You can pick your favorite color from the panoply of pantones that exist in this world. Your color will be screen printed as the map base and street grid, and the bridges will be pressed on top. We will only produce 15 of these unique prints for this Kickstarter campaign.
Something else you want? Don't hesitate to ask. This project was created to celebrate Portland, and the bridges that connect it, so please let us know what you think!
Christopher Adams: Printing partner for the project. Artist, and all around helpful fellow.
Ron Sparks: For editing tape of me yammering on about the map and bridges and turning it into a nice video for this project.
Darrell Fuhriman, For providing the base vector artwork for the newest bridge, Tilikum Crossing.
Onuinu, For the music in the video.
Risks and challenges
We are confident we will be able to produce the maps in a timely fashion. However, this is a small operation. So if something happens to me or my printing partner, it will slow down the process. We are mitigating this risk by giving ourselves plenty of time to produce and print these maps.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
