Hi! my name is Harald, I am a typographer based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. I would like your help to create the 5th Edition Typographic Wall Calendar for 2014. This is the (1,2,3…) fourth time I am kickstarting this calendar. With the Sigmund Freud Typeface my fifth typography project is on Kickstarter.
This upcoming 2014 edition is very special to me. It marks the 5th year I have been working on this project. Through Kickstarter I've gotten amazing feedback for this work. In the past three years I had the chance to share this calendar with over 500 backers from 43 countries around the globe, form Australia, Brazil to Iceland, Israel, Japan to Russia, South-Africa and New Zealand…(find a complete list below). It made me very happy to see my work travel into backers' homes, offices and workspaces.
What is this Typographic Wall Calendar? The calendar is made of two-thousand and fourteen used keyboard keys. The keys are arranged manually in a grid ( 38 x 53 = 2014 keys) to write out all days of the year 2014. The print of the calendar reproduces the keys in original size (1:1) By backing this project you help me to pay the production and printing costs of the calendar upfront.
The initial idea for the Typographic Wall Calendar came from a daydream. In this dream I imagined a person in a random office typing in front of a computer. The person writes letters, for example to customers. On every letter the person writes the date, a repetitive part of the job. I imagined that as the person types, the pressed keys would (somehow) sum up or accumulate. Not only would the keys be counted but also collected, ordered and stored. Over days and weeks it would become a mountain of keys. This "mountain of keys" then became the Typographic Wall Calendar.
This year I want the project to spread even more! It is the fifth edition of the calendar so I thought it would be great to send out 5 prints of the calendar and a set of 14 postcards to each backer for $14! In the hope that you will find four friends that you can share them with - and 14 people that you will send a postcard to. So I am not only rewarding you for backing this project, I would like you to participate in spreading the project around! This is what the composition of the 2014 calendar looks like:
Is it a real calendar? How do you read it? Yes! It is a real, usable calendar. This typography calendar makes finding dates a fun and creative process. If you read the keys from left to right, they show each day of the year in sequence: JANUARY TUE 01 WED 02 THUR 03 etc. You can think of it like a string of all dates in the year. To make things easier, every month is marked by two "star" or asterisk keys. After a bit of practice, you can orient yourself quickly within the grid. It is also possible to write directly onto the calendar, the ink of some brands of white board markers can be wiped from the surface.

OBJECT — SATOR Square — is a latin Palindrome. The keys read the same backwards and forwards, from bottom to top. As a result the SATOR Square evokes a calming sense of order and complete symmetry. The earliest datable square was found in the ruins of Pompeii that was buried in the ash of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 almost 2000 years ago.

How is the calendar made?
First the keys are removed from the keyboards. Then the keys are arranged by hand into a grid.
To achieve high resolution and minimize lens distortion, the keys are photographed line-by-line in small groups.
The 2010 prototype was a gigantic image of 323 Megapixel (15119 x 21378px, 1,83 GB Photoshop file). Print info: The printed Typographic Wall Calendar reproduces the keys in their actual size. The size of the image is B0 (70 cm x 100 cm) and will be printed on a bigger A0 (84 x 119cm sheet of paper. The artwork is printed in four color offset on glossy paper, finished with a UV coating to protect the print from scratches and colors from bleaching.
Around the world: Through Kickstarter the calendar was sent to 43 countries around the world: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Schweden, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, USA.
How did the project start? The project began in 2009 as a (very oversized) New Year's card for my Studio in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The response from friends and clients was overwhelming. People called up to say that they wanted to buy more or already framed it.
2010 the project became a Kickstarter campaign →kck.st/20eleven. The response was very positive. After a successful campaign with 205% funding, over 90 calendars shipped to people all over the globe.
2011 the Typographic Wall Calendar received an overwhelming funding from 428 international Backers. →http://kck.st/2000and12
January 2012 the Typographic Wall Calendar received the Gregor international calendar award in Stuttgart. Yes, there are awards especially for calendars in Stuttgart.
Further the 2012 Edition became an 'Editors Pick' at GQ Germany, featured on Fab.com and reviewed in 'DESIGNER' an Art/Design magazine from Tel Aviv!
2013 the Typographic Wall Calendar send out to 178 international Backers. →http://kck.st/2000and13
What do other people say about the Typographic Wall Calendar?
"…stunning reinterpretation of a calendar is a masterful example of how a designer can completely flip a genre signifier on its head. Geisler reimagines calendars in order to change the way we visualize time, and in turn, redefines what it means to save the date." —Mike McGregor, Kickstarter, NYC

Risks and challenges
There are risks and challanges in the creation of every artwork and it is always an adventure. Especially when it is a complex project that combines different crafts. Since this the fifth time that I am preparing the Typographic Wall Calendar (fourth time on Kickstarter), I have already run into many obstacles and unforeseen problems in the previous projects. From every problem I solved, I too learned how to handle them, generally the ones one does not reckon with.
The Typographic Wall Calendar is a piece of art, but as a calendar also a seasonal article. Everybody who backs this project can expect the calendar to arrive in time.
The biggest challenge in this project is to facilitate the worldwide shipping from Germany in time within the given budget. Through the experience of the last four editions I know it is possible, but it's quite a huge task.
Since the printing is done in Germany all bills have to be paid in Euros. The budget is in US$. I tried to make the calculation as tight as possible to keep the price low. I did my calculation in Euro and added a buffer to balance the possible effects of a changing exchange rate.
