To help fund a one week Banff Centre residency to go and write my new opera - Opera Noir - with composer Andre Ristic.
OPERA NOIR is a new opera with a libretto by me, Cecil Castellucci, and music by composer Andre Ristic. It is tentatively scheduled to premiere with ECM+ (Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal) in Spring 2016. Andre and I have been offered a one week residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta from 10/27 - 11/4 to work on Act 2. The approximate cost for that will be $1500 for me alone to go.
The funds collected here will go toward a plane ticket for me from Los Angeles to Calgary, roundtrip shuttle from Calgary to Banff, room and board at Banff for 8 days, fulfillment of the premiums for Amazon/Kickstarter and a little wiggle room for unexpected expense. Like printing. Or pens.
Andre and I work best when we are in the same place. We previously collaborated in Brussels, where we generated the ideas that shaped Act 1. I am very excited to extend that experience and finish Act 2.
Andre and I previously collaborated on a live comic book opera, LES AVENTURES DE MADAME MERVEILLE, which premiered in collaboration with ECM+ 2010 in Montreal and was remounted in Montreal in 2011. Here's the trailer:
OPERA NOIR will be a multimedia opera broken into three acts--Murder, Investigation and The Fall--that uses iconic elements and characters from the noir genre like Private Eye, Thug, Femme Fatale, and Gal Friday. Set in the 1950s, the story centers on a detective who's investigating the murder of a hockey player when he gets mixed up with a femme fatale and a mob boss.
Any funding I raise above the amount requested will go toward a planned trip to Belgium in early 2014 to work with Andre on Act 3.

All art is risk. I do what I say I'm going to do and I complete my projects. As a vote of confidence we will receive a small grant from the Canada Council this winter. ECM+ is excited and has tentatively scheduled our performance for sometime in 2016. We already have the singers lined up! But there is always the slim chance that a good project doesn't work out. I am confident that at this retreat we will be able to write the libretto and music, which is the first step towards mounting a production.
The opera will run approximately 70 minutes. It will be a three act structure, like a film. But there will be no intermission.
