About this project
Skylands of Darmanis is a game project currently under development by brothers Adam and Arden DeCuir. This game takes place on the dozens of floating islands making up what remains of the planet Darmanis since a catastrophic world war. Through the course of the game, the player will collect outfits and upgrade airships to explore and help bring peace to the endangered civilizations of Darmanis.
The game will combine platform action-adventure and exploration with a top-down airship navigation and combat mode, to create a huge and interesting world to adventure through.
At its core, Skylands of Darmanis will be a adventure platform game for PC and Mac, filled with unique story-driven characters, fast-paced action, open-world exploration and customizable airships. The game will be created with the same “retro magic” that embody the 16-bit era games that came out on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. You will switch between a platform perspective and a top-down shooter perspective as you make your way across each island individually, and the entire island-filled atmosphere that is the Skylands of Darmanis.
You will play the role of a coming-of-age young man, as you pursue your dream of becoming one of the all-but-forgotten heroes of the past, called Crusaders. Once you become a Crusader, you will set off across Darmanis by airship to explore this vast world, conquer its evils and help its people.
In addition to the Crusader outfit, over time you will collect and then be able to quickly switch between many other outfits, anytime. The different outfits will each have their own power-up styled abilities, greatly increasing your variety of methods to handle the challenges found throughout the dozens of floating islands. The outfits will introduce not only an assortment of weapons, but also tools, gadgets, abilities and maneuverability options.
Each skyland is kept afloat by a naturally powered obelisk, called an Ersahr. These massive formations each contain the nourishment and characteristics that define and bring life to all the various kinds of environments you will come across in Darmanis; from grassy fields, murky swamps, magma caverns, jagged snow cliffs, overgrown forests and more. Each skyland will also have unique things to see, including distinctly cultured towns, abandoned automaton factories, bandit hideouts, monster lairs, traveling merchant caravans and so on.
To explore the skies of Darmanis, you will be able to acquire many different ships, from the 1-man skycycle, to zephyrs, all the way up to rocket-powered battle ships. Each type of ship can have its individual parts upgraded by using the arsenal of generated ship parts you find or purchase while exploring Darmanis. While in flight, you will fly your ship in a top-down shooter perspective. In this mode you will discover new islands, meet traders and have battles with sky bandits and other enemies and creatures plaguing the skies of Darmanis.
As we continue development, we will offer more insight to this project through highlight videos and articles, screenshots and concept artwork. Help us create a community for this game project! Spread the word!

Risks and challenges
Since we having been working on this game for over a year and a half, and games in general for years, we generally know how much time it takes to complete individual aspects of them. While we believe we would have plenty of time and resources if this project is fully funded, we also aimed at the bare minimum. The only potential challenge we foresee is that of not raising quite enough money to fully finish the project on time (est. 12/2013).
IF we run out of money before the project is completed, we will finish the game by switching back to our (current) slow-and-steady model of development; working on it on the side of part time jobs, until it is complete. With your funding, we will finish SoD, even if the money runs out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
