Being a Product Development Chemist and owning a pool table, I wanted a set of customized pool balls that connected with my profession and that anyone could recognize. What could be better than replacing the numbers on the balls with the element on the Periodic Table that it represents. Since they did not exist, I set out to find a way to have them made. So, after finding the company that actually makes most of the team logo, customized pool balls that you see for sale on the internet, I opened up a dialogue with them and got to work creating the graphics and finalizing the project.
It was three months of going back and forth on the graphics but I finally got the set and it was amazing. The quality is top notch and they are as perfect as I had hoped. The graphics are on two sides of the ball so there is never a question of what ball you are looking at. Also, the numbers on the graphics are large enough to see even at the other end of the table so they are still familiar to those that like to play pool. There is no learning curve or confusion over who is solids and stripes or which ball are you aiming at, like some other customized sets that all have the same logo and only two colors. The first time playing with them we found ourselves calling shots by the chemical names. "Oxygen in the corner pocket" or "do a Silicone-Phosphorous combo". Everyone that has seen them recognizes them for what they are and many don't have more than a general High School Chemistry background.
These are beautifully crafted and are professional ball sets which meet the BCA standard criteria for performance, durability, size and weight. The colors and images are crisp and embedded into the resin as they are being manufactured. You will not be disappointed!
I am on Kick Starter because I believe there is a market for these. It requires a large enough sum of money though to have them made in a quantity that makes them affordable. The prototype set was not affordable but is currently the only one in the world.
I did try approaching companies that sell pool ball sets but I had no takers. I'm not interested in selling pool balls for a living. I want to see if there is enough interest to get the project rolling without finding myself 10 years from now as a guest on Hoarders reflecting on when it all went wrong while stepping over boxes of unsold pool balls. With the format on Kick Starter, the interest is generated first.
The following information is from the billiard ball manufacturers web site;
"These billiard balls are made with a unique manufacturing process and patented HTDT (Heat Transfer Dye) process. There is no pad printing or post production coatings for the ball sets. Pad-printed logos can, and often do chip and peel rendering the entire billiard ball set unusable. The HTDT process produces a permanent image "embedded" into the resin during the manufacturing process for a long-lasting, durable, sharp, crisp image. These ball sets are professional ball sets which meet the BCA standard criteria for performance, durability, size and weight."
Risks and challenges
There are no foreseen issues with this project as the prototype set has already been created. All that is needed is a large enough order to buy the price down. Once funded, it will take approximately 4-6 weeks to have the sets manufactured and shipped.
