Norrune, the City of Oil Rigs, is constantly teetering on the verge of detonation. Heated political turmoil has ignited widespread civil unrest as protests, riots, violence and crime have been building pressure and it is only a matter of time before this powder-keg of a city goes off. The world of Combustion is dark, chaotic and unjust … but still worth fighting for.
The people, in their repression of their inner nature, struggle to find a means in which to express it. Order, chaos and the nuances in-between. All the while Calico, having shut off his emotions for years, is forced to battle his own demons.
Armed with a retractable electric baton and a suppression shield, Calico will confront suspects and criminals in any way he can. With a combat system akin to Brave Fencer Musashi, where blocking, dodging and timing your attacks are critical, Calico will walk a fine line between appropriate force and excessive brutality in his pursuit to restore order.
Being a policeman is about much more than just busting heads. Calico’s duty is to maintain the law and as such, you'll be heavily incentivized to arrest suspects, perform emergency service work, call in anything suspicious and protect the lives of civilians.
Strength, Stamina and Health, Combustion has a streamlined set of stats to keep the pace high and yet give you control over how you prefer to play. Earn experience from all manner of police work, from apprehending suspects to rescuing civilians.
Equipped with a cellphone, Calico is in constant contact with his colleagues and associates. They’ll offer guidance and insight and the occasional anecdote, and perhaps can even help Calico with his personal struggles.
Combustion rewards exploration, with so many items to use and interact with, NPCs to communicate with and interrogate, and many place to visit. Turn on a TV to watch a broadcast, buy some soda from a vending machine, or find a terrified citizen cowering behind crates. The locations Calico finds himself in keep so much of their secrets in the shadows.
If there’s one thing the early 3D era in gaming did with such unabashed pride was its cutscenes. Combustion will feature similar camera work, hitting that mark of hubris that the retro era had done so well but with the mindfulness and brevity that Calico’s story deserves.
Like Metal Gear Solid, Parasite Eve and Silent Hill, Combustion features fixed camera angles that automatically bring you back to the late 90s. And while the player-controlled cameras of the 90s were fraught with jank, the fixed cinematic cameras of our favorite games always delivered on enhancing the storytelling. Our camera is carefully utilized to fill each area with distinct emotions: isolation, suspense and despondence.
Combustion is a retro throwback to the Gen5 consoles of our youth -- The original Playstation, the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Saturn. Featuring a low-poly art-style reminiscent of the early 3D days of gaming, it is in this often unappreciated yet iconic style that the world of Combustion is built. The beauty of low-poly models is in its expressive character designs and simple caricatured worlds. Large polygons and crisp textures are the pixel-art of 3D gaming.
The technological era in-between steampunk and cyberpunk, Dieselpunk reflects and exaggerates much of our modern era -- Heavy gas-guzzling engines, “Hi-tech” CRT monitors and the giant oil rigs dotted across our oceans. Made famous by games like Final Fantasy 7 and Oddworld, this rusty, grimey and all-around industrial design permeates the entirety of the game’s aesthetics.
Retro Dungeon is a small group of collaborators with big ideas. Based in Europe, they work from different countries to lend their talents to projects they are passionate about.
Risks and challenges
Kickstarter is great, but it's also quite easy for a developer to get ahead of themselves. Therefore the scope of this kickstarter can seem conservative and restrained, but it is to ensure the game's creation within a scope that's set as realistically as possible.
Any kickstarter, especially within game development runs a risk of not being finished. This is why the game's demo and pre-production was developed so extensively before this kickstarter so all the core systems and designs were in place to where it's an issue of adding quantity and refining quality rather than develop entirely new systems. This also helps in the estimation of time for said content.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
