PRISON TERMINAL is a feature-length documentary that breaks through the walls of one of America’s oldest maximum security prisons to tell the story of the final months in the life of a terminally ill prisoner and the trained hospice volunteers—they themselves prisoners—who care for him.
The documentary draws from footage shot over a six-month period behind the walls of the Iowa State Penitentiary entering the personal lives of the prisoners as they build a prison-based, prisoner-staffed hospice program from the ground up.
PRISON TERMINAL demonstrates the fragility, as well as the holistic benefits, of a prison-based, prisoner-staffed hospice program and provides a fascinating and often poignant account of how the hospice experience can profoundly touch even the forsaken lives of the incarcerated.

HOW DOES KICKSTARTER WORK?
Kickstarter is a tool for anyone in the creative world to gather the help and support needed for their projects. Kickstarter’s platform allows filmmakers like us to share our project with the unlimited Internet community. We create a profile, set a fund raising goal and a time frame to meet it, and offer the rewards/incentives.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T RAISE OUR GOAL?
Kickstarter is an ALL OR NOTHING proposition. That means we NEED to meet our goal of $40,000. If we raise even a dollar short of our goal, we lose it all. Everything is refunded.
WHAT ARE THE REWARDS OFFERED?
This project couldn’t happen without donations from you and it makes a huge difference. To show this appreciation I have lined up some great gifts that I would like to give to you in return. Please see the rewards in the right hand column.
IS MY DONATION TAX DEDUCTIBLE?
Yes, your donation via Kickstarter is tax deductible because Prison Terminal is a fiscally sponsored project of the International Documentary Association (IDA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization. Donations are tax deductible less the value of any goods or services received, as allowed by law, as noted under each pledge level.
The IDA will administer all funds received on behalf of Prison Terminal via Kickstarter and exercise financial oversight to assure that funds are spent for their designated purpose. IDA will issue you a receipt for tax purposes.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR FUNDING UP TO THIS POINT?
For the production of Prison Terminal I spent my personal savings and a cashed out 401k. In addition, Prison Terminal received a small special assistance grant from the Illinois Arts Council as well as a small private grants from family that assisted in the purchase of a computer, editing software and the necessary hard drives.
HOW FAR ALONG ARE YOU IN THE EDITING PROCESS?
We are about 8 to 10 months away from locking picture – a term that means – completing the final cut of the documentary. But the costs do not stop once the editing is done.
WHAT WILL MY KICKSTARTER DONATION PAY FOR?
Making a documentary film is an expensive prospect, one that involves an enormous amount of resources, time and effort to create. Donations received via KickStarter will pay for the following:
• Editorial consultation • Sound composing, engineering, and mixing • Final on-line session • Promotional artwork and printing • DVD mastering and reproduction • Music/video rights • Film festival submission fees
CAN YOU RAISE MORE THAN YOUR GOAL?
Yes we can! If you see that Prison Terminal has surpassed its fund raising goal, please continue to donate to the project, as all additional funds will further bolster areas of post-production and distribution. Funds pledged above our goal will be used in the following areas:
• Audience Outreach Campaign • Development & printing of a study / classroom guide • Electronic and print media press kits • DVD duplication and postage • Conference fees and travel costs
WHEN CAN I SEE THE FINISHED FILM?
Those of you who donated $100 or more will be receiving the DVD of Prison Terminal upon completion - fall/winter 2011. In fact your copy will be pulled directly from the first carton of DVD's I get from the duplication house! If there are any delays in completing Prison Terminal by fall/winter of 2011, you will be notified and kept up-to-date on the progress of the project.
WHEN WILL I GET MY REWARD?
Once the Kickstarter campaign is over, and we've reached our goal, you will begin to see the effects of your pledge. Everyone who pledged will see their name on Prison Terminal's website supporters' page.
Once Prison Terminal nears completion you will be contacted by email to get your mailing address so I can send your additional rewards. In an effort to cut down on postage, those of you rewarded with a DVD of A Sentence of Their Own will receive your copy once Prison Terminal is completed. If you want it sooner - let me know and I'll send it out ahead of time - no biggie.
WHAT DOES THE POSTCARD AND POSTER BY KINSEY LOOK LIKE?
Prison Terminal has secured the right to use the Kinsey work "Losing Faith" as the branding image for the documentary. The image uniquely represents the emotions surrounding life and death behind the walls; from solitude and sadness to spiritual transformation and hope. Please take a look at Losing Faith by Kinsey.
CAN I GIFT MY REWARD?
Yes you can! You can also donate to the film in another person’s name. To do this, just proceed with the normal donation process in your name (this is for billing purposes and tax-deduction purposes). After our fund raising deadline, I will send you a message that will ask you for the name of the person you want your donation to be in, address, and other important information. Please just make sure to reply and tell me who you would like to receive the award or be named for the donation.
I’VE MADE MY DONATION BUT WOULD LIKE TO ADD MORE?
You can absolutely add more to your donation, and we are all the more grateful for your generosity. If you want to change your incentive reward by increasing your donation amount, just sign into your Kickstarter account. Go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button is now a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount and choose a new incentive.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO HELP?
After pledging, the next most important thing you can do is to spread the word about our campaign to your friends, colleagues, and family members.
Share our trailer and link to our Kickstarter campaign on your Facebook profile, Tweet away about Prison Terminal from your Twitter account and help us reach as many people as possible. Send out word about our KickStarter campaign to organizations and community groups in your area, such as:
• Community Hospice Organizations • Places of Worship • Community Groups and Social Service Organizations • Local Colleges and Universities
Download a Prison Terminal / Kickstarter Project Flier and post it on a bulletin board at work, school, your neighborhood grocery store, a local sandwich or coffee shop, place of worship, community hospice – wherever you think many eyes will see it.
Additionally, if you have an incarcerated loved one and are a member of an on-line support community - please get the word out and direct the community members to the KickStarter project site. We need help especially from those of you who may face the prospects of having a loved one pass away behind bars.
HOW CAN I MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER IMPACT?

Your name would appear in our credits and on IMDB as such.
