THE STORY OF HANNA, a beautiful and cold-blooded murderer, a born sociopath with no concern for societal expectations. While living as a drifter on the highways of the east coast, she meets a sensitive young musician and begins a relationship that will blur the line between victim and accomplice.
NOT GRINDHOUSE, NOT ART-HOUSE, but somewhere in between... A dark character study spiked with comedic moments and a supernatural twist. As if the Coen Brothers directed the life story of Aileen Wuornos, but with a detour into Pan's Labyrinth.
THE DEMON BAPHOMET, the architect of the universe, who haunts the edges of the story. Representing Hanna's freedom through amoral acts and her enslavement to compulsion, he is her constant, her nightmare, her underworld muse...
WHY DONATE? Love strong female protagonists? Anti-heroes beahving badly? Cold-blooded acts of gory violence? How about all three? We know there are so many exciting, original projects on Kickstarter, but we're aiming for the stars on this one, hoping to deliver a new indie classic.
WHO'S IN IT? As much as I want to make this film a reality, it would be better left on the page if I didn't find an incredible lead actress to embody this challenging character. Fortunately, I've found that and more in HANNAH ELIZABETH SMITH.
An award-winning film and theatre actor, with roles as blood-soaked as Carrie and Lady Macbeth already under her belt, Hannah absolutely owns this role. She gets so deep into the character that sometimes it's tough to bring her back out.
The film also stars NICHOLAS REED as Ezra, a sensitive young musician who inadvertently falls into Hanna's clutches.
Appearing in numerous independent films in the Wilmington area, he has also appeared consistently on stage in productions such as The Tempest and Twelfth Night and has also directed several productions, founding the Up All Night Theater Company in 2014. Nick brings tons of energy, intelligence and charisma to his character, and we are lucky to have him.
CHRISTOPHER MARINO will be playing a character I won't mention in any form whatsoever, because to do so would spoil an awesome and gut-wrenching scene near the end of the film.
He has taught at numerous universities and theatres in the US and England. Schools and theatres Include the Shakespeare Theatre Company - Washington DC, Utah Shakespearean Festival, Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Stella Adler in New York City, George Washington University, University of Maryland - Baltimore County, and Illinois State University. As an actor he has a career that spans twenty years working regionally and at Shakespeare festivals. Christopher is also a founding member of the award winning Taffety Punk Theatre Company in Washington DC. He is the former Artistic Director of the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival and the current Assistant Artistic Director at Piccolo Theatre. He most recently directed an unforgettable rendition of Measure for Measure to protest North Carolina's HB2.
BUDGETING YOUR CONTRIBUTION:
40% will be put into makeup and practical effects courtesy of the amazing DAMIAN FISHER. In addition to his work as SFX mold supervisor on films such as Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Damian runs his own independent production company with the goal of creating top quality effects for modestly budgeted pictures like ours! Damian has offered to work on the film to create awesome demons and gory murders at a drastic reduction from his usual rate, but we still need your help to bring his visions to life.
20% will go to crew and production costs. While many of my crew members have generously offered their time and expertise just because they believe in the project, there are still positions to be filled and special equipment that will need to be rented. We have a solid foundation in terms of gear and talent, but this will cover specialty items, like a 4K drone and pilot!
15% will ensure that we have catering not just for our fantastic cast, but also our crew and extras. Cooking is probably my second biggest passion after film, and I want to make sure that no one on my set has to resort to buying fast food (unless they're really craving some 2 A.M. french fries).
12% must be set aside for Processing fees and Kickstarter's cut.
8% will go to fulfilling Kickstarter rewards. Can't forget about you guys!
and finally 5% will go into securing a few special locations that will look awesome in the finished film and add tons of production value.
$20,000 STRETCH GOAL:
THE BADASS ONE-TAKE TRACKING SHOT!
You know those scenes. Goodfellas. Atonemenet. Children of Men. The entire running time of Birdman. Awesome, unbroken takes where crazy shit goes down. Well, we have one planned out and it's a doozy, involving not one, not two, but three! gory murders in a big beautiful crumbling turn-of-the-century mansion. To be frank, I had filed this shot away in a back corner of my brain, assuming we'd never have the budget or time to do it properly, but with your help, and a lot of good old-fashioned elbow grease (90% courtesy of my steadicam operator) we might just be able to make it a reality. You seriously want to see this, you really do. I want to make it. So let's do it.
BAPHOMET isn't just simple genre fare, it's a deeply personal meditation on my own feeling of disconnect from society at large. If you've ever felt alone in a group, or awkward at a party, or like you might never find a place where you fit in, I think you'll find something to relate to in Hanna's struggle. The fact that her primary coping mechanism lies in brutal murder is just the icing on the cake.
That being said, I don't take the violence in this film lightly. As entertaining as onscreen bloodshed can be, we don't shy away from the psychological toll it takes on our characters, even one as sociopathic as Hanna. For every night of drunken revels, there shall be an equal but opposite hangover. And although she realizes her serial killer lifestyle is unsustainable, she sets herself ever further on the path to self-destruction.
So when I call this story GOTHIC, I'm not trying to evoke the tired tropes of Hot Topic teens and suburban Satanists, but rather the more traditional idea-- a story of timeless romance and tragedy, rooted in the universal struggle of attempting, against all odds, to be a human being.
So with these convictions, and a background in turning fast-paced, down-and-dirty guerilla filmmaking into award-winning short films, I humbly ask for your assistance in bringing my dream to life. With an incredible crew of multi-talented hooligans, all wearing way too many hats, and what I'd call a dream cast except for the fact that they consistently exceed my wildest, I truly believe we can make it happen. All we need is you.
Risks and challenges
RISKS AND CHALLENGES
Independent films are always a risky proposition, and we are working on a limited budget and a tight schedule. On top of that, the story calls for a large number of locations, many of them outdoors, which can create challenges in lighting and sound recording. To mitigate these potential issues, we are shooting 95% of the movie in the city of Wilmington, North Carolina, a visually rich and diverse area that is also home to one of the largest and most experienced film communities on the east coast. This cuts down on travel expenses for the cast and crew and allows us to complete work on multiple locations within the same day.
We are also using low wattage, high-efficiency battery powered LED lights, which add a great deal of flexibility to shot composition. I designed a tight shooting script with no characters save the leads appearing in more than two scenes, allowing us to take full advantage of our incredible local acting talent by scheduling them in short but potent guest appearances.
And finally, with a lengthy pre-production, we have designed every shot in the film ahead of time down to the finest detail of focal lengths and apertures. With our level of organization, and the talent of our amazing crew, I know we are capable of a great deal, and believe this production will be a series of exciting artistic challenges, rather than a frustrating streak of logistical problems.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
