A LITTLE ABOUT ME!
I reared five sons and helped rear countless others, often doubling as playmate, coach, Cub master, peacemaker and mentor.
Raised as one of fifteen siblings, I learned early on that BULLYING was not acceptable and in its place creative conflict resolution and sharing was demanded, mostly by a mother who also taught us civic responsibility.
The incident that probably most propelled me to be an advocate for victims of bullying occurred when I was about eight years old. I stumbled upon a fight between two older boys in the field next to my home. The larger of the two boys, well known as a neighborhood bully, was pummeling the smaller one without mercy. As much as I wanted to intervene, being so much younger and to be honest, scared to death, I felt utterly helpless. The incident affected me so terribly that to this day, even at 6'5, 250lbs, I have no stomach for excessive violence, not even in movies.
My almost fanatical feelings about children's safety is the result of a combination of things. One, being raised by a father who absolutely forbade reckless play. Even such normal childhood activities such as climbing trees, playing in streets and even crowding a batter while playing softball was forbidden.
The most dramatic incident that occurred however, happened when I was in the fourth grade. On a warm summer afternoon in front of my home, my older brother Dave was in the middle of the street and crying out loud. He was mumbling, "I had him in my arms, but I couldn't get him up the hill," as he mimicked carrying a person across his arms. He was referring to my best friend Moo Moo, who died in his arms. Moo Moo and my other best pal Kevin, both drowned that day while swimming unchaperoned in a nearby sump.
That single incident changed my life forever!
Today, like my mother I have zero tolerance for bullying of any kind and try so desperately to mirror her kindness and civic sentiments. Like my father, I am almost obsessed about the safety of ALL kids, especially while at unsupervised play.
WHEN THE DREAM BEGAN
In 2009, when “Anthony Meets the Playground Bully,” the debut book of my multi-book “Anthony Kids’ Safety" Series was first available as an E-Book, I reached out to politicians and celebrities looking for support in my efforts to eliminate bullying in our communities. Understanding that bullying is learned behavior, contagious and begins in the earliest years, I anxiously contacted schools and youth organizations to invite me in to speak with staff and children about the negative affects of bullying and steps in eliminating bullying from our midst, in particular, in the lives of children and “challenged” individuals.
Unfortunately, my initial approach was politely met with much skepticism and resistance. You see, at the time bullying was not yet considered to be a BIG problem in our society.
WHAT DRIVES ME TO DO MORE?
Only after many national and local celebrated cases, my concerns have now come to light, and bullying of ALL forms is now a well documented and much talked about epidemic.
Bullying initiatives have taken flight, I have spoken to thousands of students and many states have since mandated schools to put anti-bullying plans into effect. Nagging thoughts that I could or should have been more persistent; or to be more truthful, annoying pain in the butt! makes me wonder how many victims could have been spared had I been.
My cartoon will further enhance my tireless efforts to empower youngsters of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds against bullying and other harms due to their own or others’ carelessness and/or poor decisions. It will depict subjects of great significance, such as the benefits of good hygiene and how it relates to bullying, swimming safely and a “Buddy" system. Finally, what will make this cartoon so unique? While it promises to be entertaining and fun; coupled with safety skills, it will inspire children as well as their care-givers to love and respect themselves and others, and provide HOPE and direction in difficult times!
Hopefully the care-givers of these children will carry the message of the cartoon into adult arenas such as sports, politics, and the work place.
WHY IS MY CARTOON NEEDED MORE TODAY THAN IN THE PAST?
Many children are being raised in single parent households absent of the once extended family that developed self-esteem, and provided discipline and daily reinforcement of safety lessons taught. Sadly, each year in the U.S. alone three million bullying incidents are reported, 1500 children drown, and 600 children die in pedestrian accidents in addition to the 38,500 injured. In 1999, more than 50,000 children and adolescents were taken by non family members.
Fortunately for most of us, children are so very much more than these cold statistics; for every child is unique, special and deserving. If one child can be saved by my cartoon then no amount of effort or monies spent would be in vain. What a wonderful world it would be! A whole community coming together for one great purpose, so many future tragedies avoided and so many beautiful children thriving under “Anthony’s” safety umbrella making sound life-changing and/or saving decisions in and around the home, playground, supermarkets, malls, etc.
WHY AM I ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT?
I know that big dreams don’t happen without others dreaming with you. For “Anthony Meets the Playground Bully," to become a cartoon pilot I need your help in producing a quality finished project. We have already begun the steps, the pilot’s script has been written, the creative team is on board and the storyboard, the illustrations placed in sequence before a movie or cartoon is actually started, is next! From there tireless efforts of mailing DVD’s, walking the streets, knocking on familiar and not so familiar doors and doing whatever else must be done; confident that some producer or network will find favor in a project that reflects the wishes of a whole community. I do have a few financial supporters already, however, the rest of the dream needs your funding and your spreading the news to your family, friends and associates to be realized.
“The overall emotional and physical wellness of its citizens, in particular, its youngest and most ‘challenged,’ benefits the security of the entire community.”- Kevin Bailey
