We, Roberto and Stefano, spent countless years of our life struggling with one of the biggest limitation to our productivity while studying, working or reading: a proper light. In 2014 we still hadn’t found a valid solution and that's why we decided to create one, a table lamp, able to guarantee the freedom of natural light whenever and wherever we needed.
We dedicated over 8 months in designing and prototyping, and we are now proud to present you HOKU, a unique table lamp. HOKU can enlighten perfectly your working space recreating the natural daylight with no need to regulate brightness or position; say goodbye to the usual tiredness due to artificial light.
HOKU has been designed with the right positioning and the exact light power to respect your needs and keep your eyes refreshed during long activities, that's why it can be used comfortably at home as in the office, in lounges or in hotels.
Environment is our most precious resource, that's why we wanted to design something that was also reducing at a minimum the environmental impact of our work, and with less than 5W of consumption, we are proud of the remarkable result we achieved.
For HOKU manufacturing we used only premium materials, and the lamp is entirely hand-finished and Made in Italy.
The main body is built in alloy steel, powder coated with a 0.8 micron layer that provides an incredible wear resistant surface. This technique of coating is the same used for racing bicycles frames or automotive parts.
The control of the lamp is a polished touch switch that allows you to turn the light on or off just gently brushing by with your finger.
The Led diode is a Philips Lumileds Luxeon K, a market leading model able to stand operational temperatures almost double to the one currently reached by the lamp, ensuring that you can keep it on 24/7 without any degradation.
A diffraction disc, built with a synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate, is manually refined to ensure the light is homogeneously distributed among it, and avoids unpleasant blurs and glare when directly looking at HOKU.
The temperature of the light is 3000K, a warm white choice that provides the best of 2 worlds: a home comfort feeling that avoids tiredness while supporting focus and productivity.
A visible light of 600 lumen / 1200 lux at operational distance, far ahead of the current market standards, ensure you have the exact amount of light you need for even the most complex operations.
A lifespan of 25 years (50'000 hours) of operation guarantees you will never have to worry about changing the led of the lamp.
With Hoku we finally solved our struggles with bad lighting when trying to be productive in the evening, and you finally can too!
Hoku is available in three gorgeous colours: Matte Black, Aluminum Gray and Corten Brown.
A special HOKU 1984 - Limited Edition is available in Red, and it features a unique matte black switch with 3 regulations of light: On, Off and Relax. This gives you the choice of operating HOKU at half of its power, generating only 600 lux, perfect for casual reading.
Only on Kickstarter, it's also available a Hoku - Kickstarter Ed. in only 10 numbered samples, and with an amazing Green colour.
You will have the option of choosing between 3 different controls (based on your taste):
- Touch on / off as in standard HOKU
- Matte Black on / off / relax as in HOKU 1984
- Touch with 3 regulations: on / off / intermediate, with the intermediate position that will allow to regulate the intensity based on how long you keep your finger on the touch switch.
The Kickstarter edition will also have the K logo and it's serial number (1..10 / 10) engraved on the touch switch.
You can divide Table Lamps in two main categories, based on their intended use and performance.
Design Lamps: created with the design as mainly driver, they are nice to see, and perfect to give a distinguish touch while providing filling light. The shape is not studied to be functional, and the light is not enough to be used in focus heavy situations like working, studying, reading or writing.
Task Lamps: created with their functionality in mind, usually with a bright light, a flexible body and not much care about their look. They are great for tasks requiring concentration, but they don't really need the flexible body after you find the correct position, and having it makes them simply ugly for no reason.
For the first time, HOKU merges these 2 worlds.
The user having the need to change the shape / inclination of her Table Lamp is just a sign of poor design, not of flexibility. A Lamp created for a purpose should just fulfil it, without any external effort.
That's why we put so much attention in the shape of HOKU, and the result is the first Task Lamp that gets rid of the imperfection typical of this functional product, and elevate it in the beauty arena that characterises Design.
HOKU gives you, for the first time, the efficiency of the best possible positioned Task Lamp, in the body and soul of a breathtaking Made in Italy design piece.
Is an headache the same as a refreshed mind?
Are dry or watery eyes the same as properly rested ones?
Is the impossibility of focus properly the same as a razor sharp concentration?
Is tiredness the same of high productivity and liveliness?
No, they are not.
And that's why choosing the proper light matters so much. A simple choice like the light you are exposed when performing different tasks can impact your wellbeing deeper than expected, and it's important to have the information to make the correct choice.
Luminance: is the measure of the light emitted by a source. It's measured in lumen, and represents the brightness of the light source.
Illuminance: is the measure of light falling on a surface, measured in lumens per square metre (lux), and represent how much the incident light illuminates the surface.
Color Temperature: each light source has its own individual color, or 'color temperature'. Color temperature is recorded in Kelvin, and it varies from red to blue with the increase of its value. Artificial light produces more tiredness and mental stress, compared to natural light, for the same values of increasing color temperature. That's why it is rarely recommended to use artificial lights reproducing the daylight temperature of 6000K, but instead values around half of it are preferable.
Viewing Angle: this is the full angle at which brightness is half of the brightness from dead center. A wide angle allows to have a bigger surface illuminated properly, and a more homogeneous distribution of the light from the center of focus to the edges of the working area.
LED, compared to traditional light bulbs, have been always associated with very narrow viewing angle, in the range of 70 degrees (+/-35º) against the 360º typical of a candle or a free standing bulb.
For a Task Lamp, there is no need for 360º, and that's why common Task Lamps have a cone-shaped head, that reduces the light angle and avoid the light to be spread in all directions.
Most of the new generation LEDs are now able to provide a viewing angle of 90º, sufficient for a decent work experience, but if you can stretch it to 120º, you really have outstanding performances and natural view feeling.
CRI (Color Rendering Index): is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colours of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. CRI is generally scaled from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the reference light emitted by a blackbody radiator, and with differences in CRI values of less than five points not being significant.
A CRI of 70+ is required for good work environment, while 90+ is suggested for professional image editing.
Suggested LUX values: The outdoor light level is approximately 10,000 lux on a clear day. In a building, in the area closest to windows, the light level is reduced to approximately 1,000 lux. When this natural light starts to fade with the approaching of the dusk, additional lighting equipment is often necessary to compensate the low levels.
Max Illuminance position: this identifies where you will have the dead center of your viewing angle (see above), relatively to the lamp itself.
Having a proper distance between the lamp structure and your main working area allows you to move freely on your desk and forget about the fact you are using a Lamp.
A correct distance from the LED head of the lamp and the desk instead, allows you to exploit at its best the full viewing angle of the light source.
Why to not over-illuminate: over-illumination is linked to various negative health effects, such headache, fatigue, physiological stress and anxiety. It's important to be exposed to enough light to successfully perform a chosen task, but not so much to be blinded by excessive light, to avoid these related health risks.
Why to not under-illuminate: under-illumination is responsible for eyes irritation, while making you more tired, sleepy, sluggish and sad. Without the proper illumination, it's difficult to keep focus, more effort and concentration are required, but also our mood is impacted on the long run. Just think of the difference in being yourself in a bright sunny spring day, against the shadow of your former self impacted by a grey, cloudy day, without enough natural sunlight.
As a perfect complement for Hoku, we developed also the MemoPad.
This is our personal re-engineering of the Notepad, adapted for the 21st Century.
Say goodbye to sticky notes, loose papers or missed notes.. with this breakthrough anodized aluminum MemoPad, taking quick notes will be a revolutionary experience you'll start to love again.
Write - Read - Erase -> Quick, without wasting time or smudging the ink, and saving paper that is not needed for disposable notes. You just need a pencil and a rubber to start saving forests and enjoy quick notes again.
To show we love you, we designed also something that everyone supporting us can receive: a key-ring that with its clean and modern design can embody the high-tech revolution of the LimeLab project itself.
Of course, it's built with the same anodized aluminum premium material of the MemoPad.
