as an independent filmmaker, one of the challenges these days is simply figuring out *how* people want to watch your work. it turns out you can't just throw a VHS out there anymore and be done with it. we now find ourselves juggling theatrical tours, DVDs, downloads, netflix, itunes, vimeo, hulu, brain-to-brain uplinks, and more.
we've never released a bluray though and lately a lot of people have been asking for one... with the animated feature film IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY and the new short WORLD OF TOMORROW being the two most requested titles.
i closed our little online shop about a year ago after many years of self-distributing DVDs and other odds + ends. i love what we did with the DVDs, there's lots of great stuff packed on them and they directly funded today's movies, but i've been trying to slowly ease my way out of physical media... dealing with retail, storage, and the growing guesswork of how many people are even still interested in discs was sort of a long nuisance. those DVDs are still available on amazon but are all out of print and will soon be gone.
with crowdfunding though, things get kind of interesting: we can make the bluray that everyone's been asking about but we'll only need to print as many copies as people sign up for... then we can ship them all out in one go and be done with it. it cuts out the long-term commitments for us with storage and distribution and puts a blu in your hands much sooner than otherwise possible.
this $ total approximates the minimum number of copies we'd like to produce and ship in order to make the production and remastering endeavor worth going through. we'd rather not make the disc at all until we're sure there's enough people actually interested in it. the blus will be authored by the same team in burbank who created our last few DVD releases and professionally replicated at a technicolor-affiliated lab. as usual, i'll personally oversee the remastering and color correction process.
on top of funding the bluray, and maybe more importantly, your $ will go towards funding our future films, with no distributors or third parties between us ❤
WHAT WILL BE ON THE BLURAY?
1. i'd like to give the feature film version of IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY a new color pass with fresh eyes & WORLD OF TOMORROW is ready to go, having never been released yet on any physical format. we will call this release WORLD OF SUCH A BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW. wait, no we won't.
2. there will be a new interview on the disc
3. i'm animating something new this summer. the blu will be the first place to see a teaser for it
4. instead of doing the usual special features thing, i'd prefer to just add more short films on there. besides, just about all the making-of stuff we could possibly share for IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY has already been released on the other discs. but there's lots of shorts in the back catalog that have not been released in HD, so if we exceed expectations we'll be able to take the time to polish some up and get them on the disc too, as stretch goals: THE MEANING OF LIFE? REJECTED? BILLY'S BALLOON? RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK?
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INTRODUCTORY REWARDS?

WHERE CAN I PREVIEW THE FILMS?
IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY is currently streaming on netflix, hulu, itunes, and probably other places i'm forgetting. WORLD OF TOMORROW is currently available for rental only on vimeo and will continue to appear in theaters at festivals throughout the year: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/worldoftomorrow
IS THIS A PRE-ORDER?
no, if the blu isn't funded we just won't make it. this release also won't appear in shops. it's inevitable that we'll wind up with extra copies to sell off online - there's always some overage when you produce something like this in bulk - but there probably won't be very many.
CAN I RECEIVE MORE THAN ONE COPY OF THE BLURAY, FOR FRIENDS?
yes, please add $23 to your total for each additional copy of the bluray that you'd like (up to 5), and make a note of it for us on the end-of-project survey.
WILL THE BLURAY BE REGION-FREE?
WILL THERE BE A REGULAR DVD MADE AVAILABLE OF THIS RELEASE?
no, IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY is already available on the DON HERTZFELDT VOLUME 2 DVD, and WORLD OF TOMORROW just doesn't look right in fuzzy standard definition. bluray only this time.

Don Hertzfeldt is an Oscar nominee whose animated films include IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY, REJECTED, THE MEANING OF LIFE, BILLY'S BALLOON, and WORLD OF TOMORROW. His work has played around the world and recently made a special appearance on "The Simpsons." Seven of his films have screened in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where he is the only filmmaker to have won the Grand Jury Prize for Short Film twice.
Blending traditional animation, experimental optical effects, trick photography, and new digital hybrids printed out one frame at a time, all three chapters of IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY were captured on a 1940s-era 35mm animation stand, one of the last surviving cameras of its kind still operating in the world.
Upon their original releases, this short film trilogy about a man named Bill received 90 awards, including the Grand Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking from the Sundance Film Festival, Best Picture from the Fargo Film Festival, and the Audience Award from the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
The 2012 feature-length version was named by several critics as one of the Top Ten Films of 2012. In 2014, Time Out New York named IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY #16 on their list of the "100 Best Animated Movies Ever Made."
WORLD OF TOMORROW features the voice talents of Julia Pott opposite Don Hertzfeldt's then-four-year-old niece, Winona, in a sprawling journey through time and space.
To date, the short film has received 22 awards, including the Grand Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking from the Sundance Film Festival, the Annecy Animation Festival's Audience Award and Special Jury Citation, Best Animated Short from SXSW, and a special Visionary Award from the Nashville Film Festival.
Indiewire has called the short film "one of the best films of 2015," and The Dissolve named it "one of the finest achievements in sci-fi in recent memory." The A.V. Club described the film as "visionary" and "possibly the best film of 2015."
