Fabric: A performance of contemporary dance featuring South African storytelling and live music.

The Work and The Art

Fabric is a collaboration of contemporary dance with storytelling and music stitched together for its premier in the National Arts Fringe Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa.

This performance promises to be athletic and energetic in physicality as well as visually captivating. Three dancers, one story teller and a musician will lead you through this performance using their inspiring individual creativity.

For those who are unable to attend the event in South Africa, we will be creating a film of the work in process and the finished piece, as well as writing follow up stories about all of our experiences.

Funding and Workshops

The funds will go towards production. Including venue hire, technical requirements, accommodation and domestic travel as well as resources and tools for teaching workshops. We are sourcing funds to pay for our flights and living separately so this Kickstarter fund is to ensure the artistry of this project can happen.

It is really targeted at cultural exchange, gaining and giving new experiences and learning in this process about education through dance. This is why the workshops we will be leading are so important. They will be available for people of all ages in the areas where we are rehearsing in South Africa. They are not about us teaching dance but about swapping skills and encouraging more people to perform and share work.

ዱካ

Duka

The name Duka is Amharic (Ethiopian) for footprint. We are made up of 3 dancers, 1 choreographer and 1 storyteller and together we are the five toes of a footprint!

We met at The Scottish School of Contemporary Dance in Dundee, Scotland. We are still training together there but are extremely enthusiastic about our own projects too. This is the biggest one we have attempted so far but we are confident that we have the skills and experience to succeed and preparations are well underway. It is a fantastic challenge but very much an attainable goal.

I have visited South Africa in the past year for other arts projects which gives us good ground to walk on. The actors, poets, musicians and dancers which I have been fortunate enough to meet there will be our hosts as we try to bridge the arts in different places.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The sort of risks we are anticipating tend to all be in relation to the distance that this project spans. There are also problems which we are already encountering and overcoming. Things such as relying on the internet to communicate with our fellow collaborators when they are so far away can lead to a breakdown in communication but now we have structured and co-ordinated times when we can plan, develop and get excited about the work.
We plan to fly at least one week prior to going to the show so that any delays or transport problems don't affect the performance. This also means we have time to resolve any creative issues before heading onto the festival.
Aside from finance, I can happily say there are few risks which have not been accounted for!
