You wake up in the morning. Pour the coffee, and slide into your car encapsulated by Michigan's wintery grip. Key in hand, you remember the heat of your loved one, still in bed. The stereo abrupts with last night's roar and transports you to a field- under a tent- in the sunshine with hot hands when it felt like a crime to live so fully.
Your car stereo conceals the callused fingers and tired eyes that labored through moments of ecstasy and tribulation to create a memory in you they've never known. The stereo conceals, too, the evolution each song went to through in order to finally arrive and move that wintery air around you.
If I could, I would take each one of you along with us to all of the family's who have housed us on the weary road of non-stop touring. To the hotel clerk's lobby where we danced to the sound of music in our head; the hilarious moments of Mark almost grappling with a sea lion or doing naked yoga on the California seashore; the spot in the room where the voices of PJ's fiddle and Josh's mandolin stop time from moving; or to that moment on stage, in the bright light of a dark room when I forget who I am and know only the tenderness and power of song.
But the moments we connect with the stereo between us is sometimes all we've got.
It's been almost two and a half years since we've given you a full length record, and we're chomping at the bit to give you something new for your ears. We've been devoting ourselves to these songs. Separating and coming together with constancy to develop our ideas. Now the time has come to lay down the tracks!
Long time pros and ambassadors for Folk Alley and the Americana music scene at large, Jeff Oehler and Susan Bibeau are bringing the studio to us. We're hunkering down and making it happen at our home in Ionia, Michigan. All we need now is the capital to convert this creative force into the livelihood that allows each team member the ability to do that which he or she does.
Hacky sack videography by Carrie Labarge.
$3,000 Engineer rate. Pays for two professionals to bring all of their equipment to the mitten, and to spend any and all hours of the day capturing what will become the new record. This will also include some live video footage of the recording process!
$3,000 Print/Production of physical copies of the CD.
$3,000 Publicity: get the record on the charts and in the ears of the greater public sphere.
$3,200 Pays four musicians for time set aside for the recording. Non-gigging days when we would normally be performing to pay our personal bills. This will help us to keep our heads above water during this time.
$1,000 Mixing and mastering. Getting the levels right and polishing the finished sound.
$800 Pre-recording photo and video with Lamplight for press and promotion.
$500 Album art. We want it to look as good as it sounds and we've got just the artist to do it!
$500 Nutrition and libation for one week of 4 people plus one week of 6 people being holed up in Ionia wrapped up in the recording process.
$200 Travel expenses, mostly in the form of gasoline to get PJ, Jeff and Susan safely to the Ionia abode.
$300 Shipping and handling
$500 T-shirts for Kickstarter backers who opt for the swag rewards.
$1,600 Kickstarter/Amazon fee: 10% of goal/total costs.
GRAND TOTAL: $17,600
***These expenses do not include compensation for the countless hours that we've already spent writing, rehearsing and laboring over the music for this record.
***You'll notice that we have set our goal for lower than the grand total costs for the record. We really want to do this one justice: for the songs, the time, and the experience we've gleaned thus far in our career. However, we understand that this budget is significantly higher than campaigns for records we've kickstarted in the past. We're hoping that the goal we set is a reasonable one, but if we meet it early and are able to raise the rest of the budget, that'd be great!

Risks and challenges
There is always a lingering feeling of dread when conducting a Kickstarter crowd-source funding campaign. What if we don't reach our goal? The way this platform works is that we have to earn 100% of the goal by the end date or else we don't get any of it! Money you contribute won't come out of your bank account until that last day, and only if we've reach the goal.
While this is only the second full length Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys record, collectively we in the band have been a pivotal part of the completion of 10 full length professional records. That's enough experience to feel sure that we're up to the task of bringing this project to fruition, and we're well on our way, having gathered the essential elements (i.e. the songs, the cast and the crew, the time and the space). Now it's up to you to help us gather the final component: the capital.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
