Monsters & Magic: 100+ New Creatures and Items for 5e
Over a hundred new monsters and magic items for the fifth edition of the roleplaying game we all love!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, January 10 2019 11:46 AM UTC +00:00.
Since the days of our grandfathers heroes have risked their life, undertaking perilous journeys and fighting mighty foes for treasure and glory. Steel yourself, face the peril and walk off with great rewards! This tome introduces over 100 monsters and 100 magic items inspired by European legends to fifth edition. After a successful Kickstart for our campaign setting last year, we are back with some great ideas.
You’re getting a book that will be about 300-350 pages in length, hand drawn in greyscale and ink by a team of talented artists. Like the legends and sagas of old, the atmosphere in this book is both grim and mysterious.
For GMs: Every monster is designed with care and detail, including introductory tales, descriptions of their biology, behavior and history. We’ve included optional rules, monstrous hooks to inspire you, and mini-dungeons that will provide hours of entertainment. Both the monsters and magic items in this book have been designed to be of use to you no matter which tier your heroes are currently. But there's more...
For players: You’ll find new playable races, pets and familiars, useful new tools and awesome magic items. We’ve even listed the parts of the book that are useful for you specifically- just in case you want to avoid spoilers. Diligent readers will find some links to our On the Shoulders of Heroes campaign setting, but all creatures have purposefully been designed to fit into any fantasy world.
This time we have the pleasure of working with industry veteran, two-times Hugo Award winning artist Don Maitz and excellent mapper Dark Realms Maps. Some of our favorite artists, including the extremely talented Eoghan Kerrigan & OnHolyServiceBound will also join in! Guest writers include best selling fantasy writer Jesper Schmidt, who will be previewing some monsters from his new book, Fantasy foodie Sophie Grunnet, Dragon Magazine contributor Scott Noel, Lands of Adversity author Jack Crawford and… our backers!
Even the lowest tier backers will have a chance to send in their monster and item ideas! Higher tier backers will receive various rewards: the digital version of the book, a handy collection of digital tokens and maps, the hard cover print and a Kickstarter exclusive mini-poster with that amazing cover art by Don Maitz. Our most generous backers have the option of naming a magic item and having one of the creatures in the book based on their likeness – choose between monster and hero! You can also bring your friends and family to on online gaming session of up to five hours.
We offer two Kickstarter exclusive reference-decks, that hold abbreviated statistics of almost everything in the book – ideal if you want to keep your book snugly on the shelf! Are you a store owner that wants to sell our book in your store? We’ve got your back with the re-seller tier: 5 books at a discount!
All donations will increase production value of the book, allowing us to include more and higher quality art.
We are including one monster designed by backers for every 200 backers! There’s no limit to the amount of ideas that you can send in and we promise to read all of them. If we choose your monster you will be credited in the book, will be consulted in the design process and will receive a high-quality digital image of the creature for personal use.
Risks and challenges
We are working together with DrivethruRPG to print and ship the books, cards and posters. They print on demand, which allows us to offer a premium hardcover version of the book and two decks of cards: a monster deck and an item deck.
For the first time we look forward to working with a whole team of contributors. We realize that this will require more delegation on our part, but communication and collaboration have been amazing so far. We have chosen our contributors with great care and they are all extremely talented and reliable individuals. We trust them to do a perfect job – and everybody is stoked to get this train rolling. If delays of any kind occur we can redistribute the workload and have other contributors pick up some of the slack so we can deliver the product on schedule.
We’ve learned a lot from our successful Kickstarter project last year and feel confident that we can bring you a great product within the projected time frame. Specifically - we've learned to take our time. That's why this book will not be on your shelf next summer, but it'll be there before Christmas next year.
