Jawbone Station is (or rather will be, with your help) essentially a portrait of betrayal in the guise of a desert murder mystery. The story follows Johnny and Logan, two friends, who venture to the Antelope Valley to spend some time with Johnny's uncle. When they arrive, however, they find the uncle dead under mysterious circumstances and a strange girl, Caroline, living in his house. While they delve into a murky underworld to search for answers, they also explore their feelings for Caroline and for each other in the lackadaisical sprawl of the Antelope Valley. As the barriers between these antithetical worlds collapse, Johnny, Logan, and Caroline find themselves confronting the sinister and corrupt forces that lurk in the shadows of their seemingly simple existence.
I'm planning to shoot in early to mid-summer, and edit in mid- to late summer, with a final cut tentatively set for late August. I'll be shooting on location in the Antelope Valley and the Mojave Desert, with some sequences filmed in the suburbs of Los Angeles.
As with my previous films Zoetrope and Agua dulce (shot in similar locations), I plan to make extensive use of natural lighting and so I'll usually be traveling light, with a crew consisting of a cameraman and a boom mike operator. I will have equipment available and no one involved is paid. The money I'm hoping to raise on here will go towards food and gas. Food is an obvious expense: though I intend to purchase snacks in bulk before the shoot to minimize the number of food stops, keeping a cast and crew well fed quickly adds up. As for gas, the drives from my home in Culver City to the shooting locations run between 50 and 200 miles, sometimes with two cars, and as we know all too well, that certainly adds up.
I'm thrilled to be working on a movie again for the first time in almost a year, especially since it's a project I've been developing for much of that year. Anything you can spare to help me make this is deeply appreciated; I'll work my hardest to honor your investment by making Jawbone Station as rich a film as I can.
