About

Have you ever wanted to add some arcade feeling to your arudino project, or wanted to add retro displays but haven't been able to find an off the shelf product with a large enough segment or wide enough display? I know i've asked this question many times, so I decided it was time to take my years of Pinball software and hardware knowledge and create the first BIG 80s arcade display shield for arduino.

My name is Jim and I welcome you all to my crazy world of pinball hardware and software adventures. :) I've been working on pinball machines rewriting software, creating new hardware, restoring, repairing and modding for many years now and want to add something cool to the pot for arcade minded arduino fans.

So the idea for the project started when i was wondering if an arduino could control a pinball machine (it can! and with horsepower to spare!!) and i wanted to control a display that would mimick the Bally/Williams games from the late 80s (Games like Whirlwind, Black Knight 2000, Funhouse etc). The problem was there just wasn't anything pre made around that looked even close, so i thought i have to make my own :) After making the first prototype it suddenly dawned on me that this board should be made into a shield for a nano and released for others to add into their projects to. It was just too cool to keep to myself.

The product will be a standalone arduino shield board measuring 145mm high by 350mm long with a 2 x 16 digit 16 segment alphanumeric  configuration. There will be an open source controller library produced so that you can get playing straight away. The board will communicate with other arduino devices via a UART serial connection (2 wire)

The prototype pcb is assembled and working and the library is also functional with some basic methods and helper functions.

What is needed next is the support of you, friendly kickstarter people to help take the board to the next level and get them into production. Additional functionality will also be built into the library and requests taken from supporters for additional features. You can directly control where the development of the library is taken.

This pcb is the first of many retro arcade style projects that i hope to bring to the custom electronics project market. I have lots of other ideas for additional boards that will enhance your own custom hacker project with an arcade twist.

Risks and challenges

The main risk for the project is delays or mistakes from the board house that will manufacture and assemble the pcbs. However, I have built up a good relationship over the past few years with the board house that will make the product so I am confident that it can be achieved without issue. We have worked together on over 10 similar projects over the past 2 years. The final design will be subject to a strict checking programme so I am also confident that there will be zero errors before manufacture begins.
