We're on a mission! - to find the Holy Grail of sleep masks - one that blocks the most possible sensory input, but still is comfortable.
Hi! I’m Jim de Cordova. Years ago, I sketched out a revolutionary idea that presented itself to me in a dream - Using that sketch, I made a prototype based on the dream design and was awarded a utility patent on the world’s first sleep mask sound-blocking pillow (Pat. #6,088,836).
Over the years, we have improved on my original Dreamhelmet, until now we can claim our sleep aid does all the following:
1. Comfortably pillows the head.
2. Lets you sleep anywhere – home, office, planes, hotels
3. Helps support the neck
4. Blocks light.
5. Muffles sound with attached sound-blocking pillow
6. Converts to an attachable travel pillow.
7. Is Velcro adjustable - one size fits all
8. Has secret Velcro-sealing pockets, to hide passport, credit cards, alarms, I-phones.
9. Converts to independent support pillow for driving, sitting in bleachers, or at the computer.
10. Converts to a muff, to keep hands and fingers warm.
11. Protects the head keeps ears warm while sleeping outdoors
12. Protects campers from mosquitoes and lets campers sleep long after sunrise.
13. Is hypoallergenic - only 100% cotton touches the skin.
14. Comes in various attractive cover fabrics
15. Won’t slip off your head (has a patented chin strap)
16. Won’t tangle in your hair – a pillow gently cradles your head (no thin straps or lumpy fasteners!)
17. Free soft foam earplugs are included
18. Free string-tie carrying bag is included
19. Is an American invention, and is hand made in the USA of only the best materials.
20. Has single-piece ‘transformer’ design – nothing to get lost, or stolen by pets
21. Is recommended by more travel professionals, major publications and national media than any other sleep aid (list on request).
Even though we believe our sleep masks are already the world's best all-around sleep aids - our customers have demanded more!
We go far beyond any other sleep mask by reducing input to the three senses of sight, sound, and touch, to provide a sleep-inducing environment for users. We have found that the very mention of sound as one of the three sensory-inputs reduced is a very attractive idea.
It seems there must be millions of people desperately trying to sleep in noisy environments, and when they hear of a product which might offer them some relief, their minds conjure up a magical mask which will instantly put them into a 'quiet world'.
Our current sleep masks really will reduce sound down to the 'quiet world' level - IF - used together with the soft foam earplugs we provide. Otherwise, sounds can still be heard by an alert person, although with reduced intensity. We are determined to make it better!
We are confident we have the only logical way to make a truly functional sound-reducing sleep aid, using our patented sleep-mask pillow format.
Some have marketed regular sleep masks with earplugs, or even masks with earmuffs! Others sell sleep masks that wake the sleeper up with lights, or attempt to use mind-reading sensors to and regulate sleep or induce REM dream states.
In our view, most traditional and experimental masks have strayed from the main sleep objective - which is, that if you create a comfortable sleep environment, the mind will follow the relaxed body; all the rest - sleeping, dreaming, and waking up will come naturally. After all - humans have been doing this for many thousands of years without any high tech outside help!
Our mission now is to find the 'Holy Grail' of sleep masks - one with maximum possible light blocking and sound reduction - but still comfortable enough to induce sleep - the SuperMask!
We have some innovative new ideas how to find this Holy Grail of sleep, with a little help from our friends on Kickstarter.
These friends will soon share in being an honored part of the team that presents the new Dreamhelmet SuperMask to the World!
Risks and challenges
Understanding the Mechanics of Sleep:
Humans, and seemingly, most other animals, need to sleep. Science does not really know why we need to sleep, nor does anyone fully understand the exact processes involved in sleep. We do notice that most animals seem to like to sleep with their heads covered, in a protected environment that is neither too hot nor too cold, They usually prefer dark, quiet, and comfortable surroundings, without irritating objects and bumps poking at them. We design our sleep aids with these facts in mind, and will continue to do so as we develop our new SuperMasks.
Improving Sound Blocking Capacity:
By far, however, the greatest challenge of our sleep masks is to block enough sound and still have a completely comfortable sleep aid!
Improving Light Blocking:
We use a large area of light blocking material over the eyes. This blocks light and still allows the eyelids to flutter while in a deep sleep (REM) dreaming state. There may be a way to improve on this design to make the mask smaller, but still block light and allow for the same free eye movement.
The relatively large pillow and eye mask on the Dreamhelmet and Nap Star have provoked commentary. Our masks are designed that way because we believe that form should follow function. We want to make a SuperMask that first provides light and sound blocking without compressing the eyes and ears, but also one that you will be pleased to use in airplanes, airports, or any other public place.
Making Our Product in the USA:
Where will we manufacture the new SuperMask? This may not seem such an issue to our Kickstarter friends overseas, but with increasing globalization, we in the USA have seen our manufacturing jobs disappear, only to reappear in the places around the world where workers are paid the least. Should we follow the crowd, or stand on principle and reduce our income? Luckily, we have few stockholders to consult on this question.
Our sleep aids have always been hand-sewn in Los Angeles, California. We do this because we operate a small American company. We believe in traditional American values, which include working hard at something we believe in, making quality products, and contributing something of value to our own community and to the world.
Although we are not a soul-less profit-hungry corporation, our company faces the same challenges as other manufacturers; how to pay workers a decent wage, pay bills and taxes, sell to customers at a reasonable price, and still manage to squeeze out a fair compensation for our efforts in between.
We are proud to sew the little US flag on our sleep masks, and with the help of the Kickstarter Community we will continue doing so.
Marketing the New SuperMask
We have learned from practical experience that, contrary to traditional wisdom, if you build a better mousetrap (or sleep aid), the world will not automatically beat a path to your door! Positive word of mouth alone will also not cause that path to be beaten! A substantial monetary investment in marketing and advertising will, no doubt, be necessary.
After perfecting the SuperMask, we will want to get the word out to the sleep-deprived world that there is real help on their sleep horizon! This may include website-building and making big upgrades in advertising. We hope our backing from Kickstarter may even permit the ‘stretch goal’ of an infomercial!
Delivering Backer Rewards:
Our most important priority after funding will be to honor our commitment to our backers by getting their rewards into their hands ASAP! - before filling newer customer purchases! We have set August as our probable delivery date for finished sleep masks to backers (although Kickstarter and Amazon may apparently take up to two weeks to process pledges), but if everything goes smoothly, we hope to give everyone a pleasant early-delivery surprise!
We appreciate those who have faith in our mission; for them, we will do our very best to deliver them the best sleep mask in the world! We know filling their many orders will be a big job, but 'It's a good problem to have!'
