About The Story
Sally Discovers New York will be the second in a series of eBooks called "Sally Discovers". In each eBook Sally discovers a new place in her doggy centric way. Ever curious, the adventurous, lovable Black Lab Sally, is always learning, exploring and making new friends.
For this project, we are trying something new. We are asking for suggestions of places Sally should visit while in the Big Apple. As Vermonters, we welcome the advice from folks more familiar with New York City. We hope we will discover some new, fun and off beat places perfect for a dog like Sally. By taking suggestions from Kickstarter supporters, we are keeping the story fluid so it truly is written by "Sally and Friends."
New York City is a place of diverse cultures. We hope to translate this story into the many languages heard in the city. I just found out that there are over 800 different languages spoken in NYC! So we can't do them all, but we will start with some of the most popular. The first edition Sally Discovers New York eBook will be in English, the second in Mandarin, the third in Spanish and the fourth in French.
If we secure sufficient funding to develop the layouts, we plan to have copies of Sally Discovers New York eBooks with text in both English and another language simultaneously.
This will be a fun learning tool to help children learn English or a second language. In this way we will be creating eBooks that are both engaging and educational.
Sally needs your help.
She is planning her very first trip to New York City to do research for her new book Sally Discovers New York. Sally doesn’t want to miss a thing! She would like to know what your favorite places are in New York City? Please send your recommendations to Sally.
One of the best ways to help is to let others know about "The Sally Discovers Project." Please tweet, email, post, Facebook, forward, call, promote, whisper, link, and tell all your friends, colleagues, bloggers, and local papers. Give them the Sally scoop. We would like to get the word out worldwide from our little corner of Vermont.
Sally has many other places she would like to discover and eBooks she would like to write for her "Sally Discovers" series. Additional funds will help continue this great series.
We are looking forward to reading your suggestions of places for Sally to visit. Check our project page often to see what places are most popular.
This will be exciting!
Of course, we want to reach our funding goal, so Sally and her school mates actually get to take their field trip to New York City. We have some great rewards that you and your friends will love. Remember Sally Swag makes great gifts!
Quick FYI - Rewards are not cumulative.
About The Creators
It will be a challenge following in Stephen Huneck's foot steps, but as his widow and part of a team that worked closely with Stephen in creating his books, we have a clear sense of his style, wit and engagingly simple text.
I especially want to acknowledge Amanda McDermott, our Dog Mountain graphic designer as well as the voice of the "The World of Books" lady! I often hear from parents that their children want to hear the Sally stories again and again. Children love to hear the stories read to them and later, to read them to themselves. Stephen had a real talent for knowing what would appeal to children. By using mostly preexisting artwork, we are true to Stephen's bold colorful style of woodcut illustrations.
Stephen was deeply interested in children's literacy. Dyslexic himself, he wanted to help children become confident readers. Sadly, Stephen and Sally are both gone, but certainly not forgotten. In the "Sally Discovers" series his legacy lives on. I know both Stephen and Sally would approve. ~ Gwendolyn Huneck
What is Kickstarter – How Does It Work?
Kickstarter is a new and creative way to fund creativity. Members of the Kickstarter community pledge support for projects they want to see come to fruition and then, like "The World of Books" lady says, "You get lots of gifts," or in Kickstarter speak, "rewards." At a time when funding for the arts is hard to find, the team at Kickstarter has found an innovative way to fill the gap. Also, Kickstarter is an "All or Nothing" deal, if we don't hit our goal, Sally won't be published.
How Will The Funds Be Used?
The funds will be used to create the eBook Sally Discovers New York in English. The book will be written and illustrated here at Dog Mountain by "Sally and Friends" using some of the suggestions from the Kickstarter community about places Sally should discover in New York City. The eBook will be available in March of 2013 in all tablet formats including; Amazon, Apple, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble "Read to Me" NOOK Book read by our own Amanda McDermott.
What Happens If We Go Over Our Goal?
If we go over our goal, we plan to translate Sally Discovers New York into a variety of languages. We will also develop the layouts to have our "Sally Discovers" series available in English and a second language simultaneously. If the project is very successful, we will start working on the third eBook in the "Sally Discovers" series. Again, we ask the Kickstarter community for suggestions about where you think Sally should travel next and what languages you would like to see Sally "learn."
Thank you for supporting our project!

Meet the Characters
The star of the show is, of course, Sally. The original Sally was a retired seeing eye dog from Morristown, New Jersey, who we brought back to Vermont to live the good life. Sally and Stephen quickly bonded.
Sally would keep Stephen company in his studio while he worked. Just like in the various Sally books, the real Sally would accompany Stephen in his car or truck wherever he went, including many book signings. Children loved meeting Sally and Sally loved meeting children! As the children sat rapt listening to Stephen read from his latest book, Sally would patiently move from one child to the next so they all got to pet her.
Since the character Sally lives and goes to school on Dog Mountain, she will have several recurring friends.
One of Sally's friends is Molly, the Golden Retriever. Molly first appeared in "Sally Goes to the Farm," and is a real dog.
The lovely and very old Molly is lying by my desk as I write this. Like the Sally of old, Molly keeps me company wherever I go.
Another recurring character is Chocolate Chip or, "You can call me Chip," who is a Chocolate Lab. Chip creates mischief for Sally when their school goes on a field trip to New York City.
One more character is Bingo the Cat. The real Bingo used to lie on Stephen's work bench while he carved. Bingo the cat has been immortalized in many artworks by Stephen and plays a key role in the "Sally Goes to the Vet" book.
We will have to wait and see what other friends Sally will make as a new school year commences on Dog Mountain.
Since Sally's world is a very doggy centric one, Stephen always showed the people in his books as only a pair of legs or hands much like how a dog would experience the world as well as how a very young child would. We will be faithful to Stephen's way of portraying the world and its inhabitants.
Behind the Story
Although the "Sally Discovers" series is new, we like to highlight real events that happened to Stephen, myself and our family of dogs. For instance, the surprise bear cub that literally drops on their laps in Sally Discovers Dog Mountain actually happened to Stephen and our three dogs while they were resting in the woods at Dog Mountain. Events in Sally Discovers New York will also be based on things that actually happened, but you will have to wait until the book is finished to find out exactly what transpires. ~ Gwendolyn Huneck
Sally is not just another pretty face, she is a prize winner too. Some of her blue ribbons include:
- The Parents Choice Silver Award
- New York Times Best Seller
- Child Magazine Best Books
- Smithsonian Notable Book
- Society of Illustrators Silver Award Winner

Why we want to make this book?
Like Sally, the folks at Dog Mountain want to be continually growing and discovering new things. Writing and illustrating the "Sally Discovers" series allows us to be creative and feel connected to Stephen and his memory.
Sally has many other places she would like to discover and books she would like to write for her "Sally Discovers" series, so the more she can raise, the better The World of Books will be. We are looking forward to reading your suggestions for places Sally should visit. Check our project page often to see which places are most popular. This will be fun!
Of course, we also want to reach our funding goal, so Sally and her school mates actually get to take their field trip to New York City. We have some great rewards that you and your friends will love. Remember Sally Swag makes great gifts!
If there are questions you have that haven't been answered, please send us an email or post a comment. We'll fetch it right away.
Mandarin Sally 莎莉发现纽约
If we are able to raise $9,000 in funding we will do a Mandarin version of “Sally Discovers New York,” which will be available in all digital formats.
Spanish Sally - De Sally Descubre una Nueva York
If we are able to raise $11,000 in funding, we will do a Spanish version of “Sally Discovers New York,” which will be available in all digital formats.
French Sally - Sally découvre à New York
If we are able to raise $13,000 in funding, we will do a French version of “Sally Discovers New York,” which will be available in all digital formats.
This 'Stretch' is something that we are really enthusiastic about, which is having Sally Discovers New York published into two languages simultaneously. Children can opt to read the eBook in one language or the other or see both languages side by side. This is a fun way for a child to learn English or a second language. To accomplish this goal we will need to raise $15,000 in funding.
If the project does REALLY, REALLY well, we will have Sally Discover somewhere new. It could be anywhere in the world. Which place do you think Sally should discover next? Support the Project and please send us your suggestions.
Risks and challenges
As I have already mentioned, it will certainly be a challenge to follow in Stephen’s footsteps, but a challenge worth taking. Working side by side with Stephen for years, I think we have a deep understanding of what Stephen’s ultimate goals were with his Sally Books. I just hope we can be as creative, funny and insightful as he was. One reason I think Stephen’s art and books connect so strongly with both children and adults, is that he wrote from experience and what he wrote was true. Stephen knew our dogs intimately and had indeed gotten inside their heads. His dog characters were always authentic dogs, who acted like dogs actually act. Stephen wasn’t interested in some cartoon version of a dog who wears cloths and talks. While "Sally Discovers New York" is certainly a fantasy, we don’t want to stray too far from Sally’s essential doggyness. This is a creative and philosophical challenge.
Challenges of a more practical nature are making sure we allow ourselves enough time to get the eBook finished. The basic plot is already figured out, but we still have to finalize Sally’s itinerary and create the graphic illustrations that are on par with previous books and true to Stephen’s vision.
Some other issues with eBooks are getting the eBook reviewed. Generally speaking reviewers don’t like to review 1st to digital works. One of our great motivations of starting a Kickstarter project is to bring attention to the Sally Discovers Series and help us find more distribution from eBook retailers. There is always the possibility of unforeseen technical hurdles in the translation layouts especially if we use two languages simultaneously, as this will be a new step forward for us with eBooks.
We will have to work hard to get all the rewards out in a timely manner, but we are determined to do so. We have an experienced shipping department and plan to have the rewards as ready to ship as possible so when we get addresses most of the work is already done. This however will coincide with our typical busy holiday season. The team at Dog Mountain - Amanda, Jill, Kim, Tiffany, Fiore, Stephanie and I are more than willing to put in extra hours to insure our supporters are happy. The technical support from the team at Trajectory, Inc will be invaluable.
Kickstarter is new to us so there will be things we haven’t thought of that could hinder the effort. I believe we have the dedication, discipline and experience to pull it off! I am a pragmatic optimist. ~ Gwendolyn HuneckLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
