This book was born out of bedtime stories with my 2 year old son and conversations where I wanted to begin introducing the language of family diversity. I wanted to begin opening the doors to telling his foster and adoption story but not before he was ready and not in ways that he was too young to understand. Then my daughter joined us and inspired me to see this book through to completion. This story came about because I wanted to make it interactive and fun to talk about the different kind of families, and I wanted to begin to introduce words, terms, ideas, that as my children grow they can ask questions about and build their understanding of their own story in a safe and steady way, when they are ready. It normalizes different family constellations and lets children know that they are not alone. It celebrates diversity, inclusion, and encourages kindness and belongingness. My goal is also to have this book be a spring board for developing and growing conversations so that children’s feelings about their family story can be validated, so they can feel secure and safe, and so they know their story matters and we are listening.
A little about me... I am an adoptive mom of 2 amazing children, and I work as a clinical psychologist with individuals, families and children, specializing in the treatment of trauma and addiction. I'm also a public speaker and ambassador to the Los Angeles based foster and adoption agency Extraordinary Families.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges are low. The book and illustrations are complete and copywritten.
The printing company (Print Ninja) is lined up and digital files are prepped and ready to send over, and we have a consultant on standby if there are any last minute digital file glitches that need to be fixed. The only unknown is the quantity of books we will be printing and that will be determined by the success of this Kickstarter (though we hope a minimum of 500)!
There is a total of 12 weeks turnaround time.
Breakdown: 10 weeks turnaround on the printing of the books, including shipping from overseas. If the project is fully funded, and after payment is received (usually about 2 weeks after a successful Kickstarter ends), I will send the book off to print!
