"Women aren't funny."
We're tired of hearing it.
As the women of the nation's first collegiate all-female musical and sketch comedy group, Bloomers wants to provide a platform for the voices of female comedians to be heard—loud and clear.
Seeing a lack of opportunities for young and aspiring women in comedy, we decided to take matters into our own hands. We believe this festival will not only empower young women who hope to have a career in some form of comedy, but will also honor all of the talented women in comedy who are paving the way for female comedians and changing it, one step at a time, from the old boys' club it's historically been.
We want to celebrate the diverse, immensely talented female comedians out there-- and we hope you do, too.
This conference will be an opportunity for women from all over to collaborate on comedy. It will consist of a morning panel of women in comedy hosted by professional comedians, afternoon workshops, and an evening performance. We foresee this becoming an annual event as a way to provide a platform for women in comedy to continually learn and engage with other female performers.
The money raised from this Kickstarter will be used chiefly to bring exciting guests to our campus and for associated space fees.* We are in contact with some amazing comedians who are excited about this event, but we need money to pay for their travel and expenses so they can share their talents! Other expenses for this event will be used for food, apparel, and additional performer accommodations. We also want this to be an inclusive event, so we will not be charging student groups to attend, and the funds we raise will help pay for their attendance. As a result, 8000 is the bare minimum we need to make this event happen! Additionally, any profit generated from this evening show will be donated to a foundation that supports women in the arts.
However, this festival can only be made possible with your help. We want to bring comedians from all over to share their experiences, advice, and talents. Without the funds to do so, being a small student group, we will not be able to realize this event, which we think has the power to impact so many women—and the world of comedy as a whole—in such a positive way.
Thank you for any help you can lend to this event. We hope this event will inspire the next generation of Tina Feys, Mindy Kalings and beyond.
*The donations made are not donations to Bloomers or The University of Pennsylvania and as such will not be tax-deductible charitable donations-- these donations are to LaughtHERfest only, not our organization in general or to the university.
Risks and challenges
The major challenge to this event lies in that it has never been done before. As with any first-time large scale event, there is a chance that some bumps in the road could arise, but we believe that that is part of the fun of creating something new! The largest challenge is not being able to afford to pay comedians, which we think is crucial to the success of the conference. So as long as we have your support, we don’t believe there are any risks that will inhibit this event from being a massive success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
