About

INSPIRATION: PORTRAITS OF BLACK WOMEN CHANGING OUR WORLD.

In 2011, photographer Lauri Lyons traveled throughout the country, photographing extraordinary Black women transforming American culture and society.  In 2012 Abrams Books published the series as the coffee table book, INSPIRATION: Profiles of Black Women Changing Our World. The photographs were accompanied by intimate first person essays from the women, speaking about the challenges they faced, and the victories they’ve won throughout their careers.

NOW  Lauri Lyons has launched a 30 day Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the INSPIRATION: Portraits of Black Women Changing Our World Exhibition.

Who are the Women of INSPIRATION?
Laila Ali (Sports), Ambassador Nicole Avant (Politics), Dr. Patricia Bath (Medicine), Mary J. Blige (Music), Majora Carter (Environment), Debra Martin Chase (Film), Misty Copeland (Dance), Ruby Dee (Film & Theater), Whoopi Goldberg (Film, TV & Theater), Thelma Golden (Art), Bethann Hardison (Fashion), Melody Hobson (Finance), Janice Bryant Howroyd (Business), Iman (Fashion), Judith Jamison (Dance), Gayle King (Television), Patti LaBelle (Music), Soledad O'Brien (Television), Keke Palmer (Film & TV), Tracy Reese (Fashion), Shonda Rhimes (Television), Shaun Robinson (Television), Betye Saar (Art), Nina Shaw (Law), Raven Symone (Film, TV, Theater), Susan L. Taylor (Publishing), Venus Williams (Sports).  These women have influenced the social, cultural, and political landscape of America, and the world.  Watch the promo video here.

What is the PLAN?                                                                                                     Step One:  The goal is to raise $20,000 via Kickstarter to cover the expenses for printing and framing of 30 (20” x 24”), museum quality color digital archival photographs, and bios of each woman, for the INSPIRATION exhibition. Production is expected to be completed by next Spring.

The DEADLINE:  The deadline for donations is December 20, 2013. If the entire $20,000 is not raised on Kickstarter, we will not receive any of the funding!  Please act now to make this campaign a success.

* If you have a technical issue while trying to make a donation, you may send a donation via Pay Pal instead. The Pay Pal address is: laurilyons@gmail.com. You will receive an electronic receipt.

Step Two: The INSPIRATION exhibition will be solicited to museums, galleries, universities, and public institutions. The intention is to tour the exhibition both domestically and internationally.  An educational teaching guide will be available for classroom instructors and online learning.

Step Three:  Work with the confirmed exhibition venues to organize public programs to be held in conjunction with the theme and time period of the exhibition. Lauri Lyons will be available for speaking engagements.

Why is this project IMPORTANT?  Unfortunately, a whole generation of Americans are now being inundated with an endless variety of 'Housewives' serving as primary examples of what it means to be a woman. Reality TV has continually portrayed grown women sabotaging each others success, jumping on tables in public brawls, and calling each other demeaning names. I believe America needs a new and improved definition of womanhood, and I think the INSPIRATION exhibition can be a catalyst for changing the definition. INSPIRATION speaks to women’s empowerment, social equality, and diverse representations of beauty. Let's educate and entertain the public with stories and images of accomplished, dignified, successful women!

What makes this exhibition unique? The photographer captured a rare sense of intimacy and candor that radiates in the photographs. The exhibition will include a dynamic presentation of previously unpublished images from the series. All of the women were photographed in their private spaces with a medium format film camera, which created a painterly color saturation and great sense of texture within the images. How can You BENEFIT from donating?  Kickstarter is a registered 501c3 organization. All donations are tax deductible. Each donation tier comes with specific rewards, such as photographs, signed books, and even a personal  photo shoot. Your name will be featured as a funding contributor on the INSPIRATION exhibition website and in the show. You can also make a donation as a gift for another person or organization. As a good deed, you will also be supporting the production of positive images and dialogues about women in our society.

If you purchase the INSPIRATION book in a store or with an online retailer, does the purchase help the fundraising effort?  Sorry, purchasing the book outside of this Kickstarter campaign does not help fund the exhibition. As a solution, when you make a $125 donation to the fundraising campaign, you will be rewarded with a signed copy of the INSPIRATION book. The book can be personally inscribed to your or in another person's name as a gift.

Risks and challenges

The biggest exhibition challenge is confirming venues, which usually requires booking well in advance. To help circumvent scheduling challenges, and guarantee exhibition dates, INSPIRATION will be made available to a wide variety of institutions at least a year in advance.
