About this project
Why This Book Is Important
My name is Sherry Baldwin. I am a wife, sister, and daughter. But I spend most of my time being "Mom" to our five children. As a parent I spend a lot of time reading to our children, and I've noticed that they especially enjoy books that make them giggle.
I've written several children's books. This project presents my latest book, There's A Lobster In My Lunchbox. It's a collection of poems designed to entertain and get some laughs. This book is a 120 page hardback, and includes 50 poems and 50 line drawings. The illustrations are simple and creative, and still leave something to the child's imagination.
Ideas for poems are everywhere...
The poems were inspired by my everyday interaction with kids.
Yard Sale was inspired by our family's yard sale when the question came up as to what the kids were, and were not, allowed to sell.
Sample Poems from This Project:
Billie had a yard sale
to sell her parent's junk and such.
She wanted to make money
for something she needed very much.
She set up a folding table.
Then she opened her store.
The sign read, "Billie's Yard Sale"
"Get junk, great stuff, and more"
First she sold the cars,
then the forks and spoons.
Next she sold the piano,
though slightly out of tune.
She sold the recycling bottles,
and Mom's and Dad's king bed.
She almost sold the tennis rackets,
but she sold Dad's golf clubs instead.
She sold a collection of coins
that looked worn out and old.
Then she sold the refrigerator,
and the food was still cold.
Billie sold some bikes,
some fishing rods, and such.
Then she sold the lawnmower,
which they didn't use very much.
She sold the computer,
the mailbox, and brother Junior's mouse.
She sold the last few bits of stuff,
and then she sold the house.
Most of my poems were written during several family vacations to Maine. There's A Lobster In My Lunchbox was inspired by our visit to a lobster wharf, purchase of lobsters, and eventual lobster dinner. I thought how much more exciting it would be to bring a lobster lunch to school than a p & j sandwich!
(beginning of the poem only)
There's a lobster in my lunchbox,
and he says to let him be.
I tried to put him on my bread,
and he snapped his claws at me.
"I am hungry," I told him.
"And to make my lunch complete,
you will have to wear some toppings
to be suitable to eat."......... (continued)
There's a bee on the bus was inspired by a day when I was driving the kids home from school and there was a bee in my van. It created panic, so I stopped on the side of the road, removed the bee, and jotted down the poem idea in my journal.
(Partial poem, There's A Bee On The Bus)
There's a bee on the bus,
and it's buzzing all around.
There's a bee on the bus.
It's quite a frightening sound.
The bee flew to the front.
The kids scrambled to the back.
It's buzzing here and there.
I think it's on the attack..... (continued)
All of the illustrations and poems are completed. The book is arranged in seven fun categories blending school and coastal themes together. The arrangement includes:
Lunchbox Tales (school poems)
Returns (items to return that kids just don't think work right)
Summer Daze (summer poems)
Bad luck (speaks for itself)
gibberish (lots of words just for fun)
and Island Minded (coastal theme)
Thank you for looking at my children's book project. It took two years to complete the poems. The illustrator spent a year creating the artwork. It all came together to create a great collection for kids.
It would be great if you decide to fund my project.
As a physician, I am always looking for ways to put our young patients at ease. The delightful poems in Sherry's book will do exactly that. Her books allow children to spend quality time with their parents in a fun and educational way which is a perfect distraction before seeing the doctor.

"These poems will tickle the funny bone! Books are great for the development of all language milestones. We appreciate sharing Sherry Baldwin's books in our waiting rooms." Dr. F. Daniels, M.D. Pediatric Medicine
At Pine Island Boys' Camp in Belgrade Lakes, Maine we have gone without electricity and all the electronica that go with it for more than 100 years. We have replaced modern distractions with use of humor and the imagination, and they play an important role in the development of a boy's independence on our magical island. Boys at Pine Island Camp learn to use their creativity to get things done. The results are remarkable, often surprising those who know them and even themselves. Any time children can read books like There's A Lobster In My Lunch Box, and it stirs the imagination and creativity, it has a positive and lasting effect on development. Ben Swan, Director, Pine Island Camp
1. what is the size of the book?
The book is a nice size for children at about 8 by 9, and approximately 1/2 inch thick.
Risks and challenges
My first two books were self-published. Although the books were successful, I was limited in the number of books I could print by the amount of money I could personally invest, and how many books I thought I could sell, one at a time. Kickstarter enables me to print books based on support for the project.
This collection of poems has already won a 1st place award by the Woman's Club of South Carolina for creative writing, and since this is my 3rd book, I am not worried about the printing process. I will be using the funding from your support to get this book printed and into as many little hands as possible. My goal amount allows me to print 1,000 books, mail them out, mail out the other rewards, pay the artist, and pay the Kickstarter fees. The book will be a hardcover with 120 pages featuring over 50 poems and 50 line pen and ink illustrations. The cover features a full-color illustration. I am using Callawinds Publishing, and have used them before on my other projects. They make an excellent, quality book.
The only challenge is meeting the goal. But the goal is a realistic number considering all of the costs to complete the project professionally.
I only have 30 days to make this project happen. Please support me on Kickstarter today.
