"Harry Truman, some hillbilly from Missouri?"

Posted by Joseph F. Alexandre (Creator)

Hey Backers,

We want to send a heartfelt thank you as we creep upon 60% of our final goal. Anything you can do to spread the word would be greatly appreciated, even 5, 10, 25 bucks makes a big difference and of course for just a $10 backer, 3 free months of Fandor waits in the wings.

Our title is a quote from our script, and refers to President Truman's meager background before becoming PotUS. In fact, Truman was a product of the MO political machine, whose main benefactor was Tom Pendergast. With the help of the Kansas City Democratic machine led by  Pendergast, Truman was elected in 1922 as a County Court judge of Jackson County's eastern district—this was an administrative rather than judicial position, somewhat similar to county commissioners elsewhere. Truman was so intertwined w/ Tom Pendergast after being elected Senator from MO, he was dismissively referred to as the 'Senator from Pendergast'.

In 1944, during the Democratic National Convention, it was clear FDR was in very poor health, and despite the outstanding work Henry Wallace did as FDR's VP, many in the party felt him too socialist, even going as far as calling him a communist. This despite having helped the country out of the Great Depression w/ the WPA and other agricultural and employment programs and his guidance to FDR during WW2, many in DC felt he just wasn't 'one of the boys'... Therefore that summer convention was filled w/ smoke filled, back room dealing and skullduggery... Hence, President Truman, who ended up becoming a puppet for the Military Industrial complex and ratcheted up the Cold War to major proportions, and reneged on many post war promises to the USSR despite FDR's prior assurances. This helped lead a chilling relationship that lasted decades... Despite this, Truman enjoyed a bit of a renaissance amongst later PotUS's and historians w/ the whole 'Buck Stops Here' business.

We don't get into this in detail in our film, but we have plenty of back room skullduggery going on. Thank you!
