Now for the big news. We've listened to your feedback - there has been a lot of it, so thank you for that - and we've made a few big adjustments to the Kickstarter. And the good news is you're getting more stuff for supporting us.
From £5 onwards, in addition to the PC version you already receive as a backer, you will also receive a mobile version of the game once it's available on either iOS or Android. We're aiming to release Zed Defence on PC in January 2015 and that platform remains the priority. That's where we're launching first. However, we will be working on a mobile version of the game at the same time, and don't anticipate final development to take more than a few weeks after the PC launch. So, at the very latest, you can expect to receive a mobile code by the end of February 2015 in addition to the PC code you receive in January 2015!
Try out the free to play demo of the game.
New web player demo!
Currently the only language available is English, but if the Kickstarter succeeds, we shall look into implementing different languages. The demo is available for Windows and Mac. We intend for the full game to be on both Mac and Windows, with a possible Linux version to follow.
The Demo is only an Alpha version of the game, so you may experience bugs, these will all be fixed in the finished game.
The art you will see in the demo is not finalised, so please don't judge the game by its art, judge it purely on game play and enjoyment.
If you like the game and want to support us, vote for us on steam as it will help greatly with making the game even better!
Every vote counts!
The objective of the game is to beat an entire wave of Zombies (Zeds for short) by placing weapons and traps, preventing them from breaking through your defences. The Zeds will spawn from various entrances, depending on the difficulty of the level.
The example above has eight entrances that Zeds can come from. Naturally, this is one of the more challenging levels!
Fortunately, you will have a wide variety of traps at your disposal to help prevent the incoming horde, but traps need scrap metal and the only way to get scrap metal is to kill Zeds, who conveniently happen to be carrying some on their person.
You start each level with a set amount of scrap so that you can place initial traps, but you’ll need to collect more. You can collect more scrap by mining the iron ore in the environment. This will only give you a small amount but every little helps!
Items to come in the finished build
Improved Zed AI
There are many different game modes planned, but here are some that are going to be in the final version of the game.
The player must take charge of the finest military force on the planet, as decreed by the President, and protect cleaners while they de-toxify the environments, therefore removing the Zed threat. Players only have scrap metal and must build traps and weapons to hold back the hordes.
You will travel along the campaign map visiting each Town/City, removing the toxins in the area in order to stop the Zeds from spawning.
After completing each level, the Mayor of the area will provide you with a blueprint which will allow you to upgrade an existing trap. After completing each area, the Mayor will provide you with a new trap for helping them remove the Zed infection from their Province.
As the player moves further down the map, the terrain will change depending what environment they are in. E.g. If they were in a desert, the terrain would be sandy and sandstone. However near the nuclear explosion the terrain will be very radioactive and bright coloured.
This is the default mode for the game. Each level will have a set amount of waves, depending on difficulty and number of entrances. Once there are no more waves and all of the remaining zeds left on the map are dead, you win!
If you like more of a challenge, or are a glutton for punishment, you can also use the ‘speed up wave’ button which will bring the next wave in directly after the previous one, giving you no downtime to catch a breath.
This is another mode where you select an already completed level from the campaign, then try to survive for as long as possible. This mode will have unlimited waves which will get harder and harder the further in you get, until eventually it becomes impossible.
The good news is we are also planning leaderboards for this, so there are benefits to you going the distance, in that you can compare and compete with your friends.
We all love achievements, don’t we? Well, Zed Defence DELIVERS!!!!
Most achievements can be viewed from the main game menu so you can see the necessary requirements and your current state of progress. You’ll also get neat little extras when you do unlock certain achievements. We want our supporters to have some input in this so we have allowed a pledge to create your own achievements which will be in the final version of the game.
This will allow you to upgrade your traps in order to battle the harder levels in the game. After each level is completed, you will receive a blueprint from the Town/City Mayor. This blueprint will allow you to upgrade any trap currently available to you. Here is what we have planned for the upgrade tree system.
Each trap will be categorised by type. The types included are:
The Fire and Electric traps would be in the elemental tree, so upgrading this tree would improve both of these traps in different ways. This explosion tree would benefit all explosives in the game such as the mine, the TNT and the bomb.
Each tree will contain a number of tiers. Each tier needs to be completed in order to move onto the next, and naturally, the best talents are saved for the tail-end of the trees. Points can be spent and spread across multiple trees, but you only get a certain amount of points to spend, so you’ll have to experiment with which point spread best suits your game play style.
Don’t worry though, if you’re not happy with the points placed, you can reset the trees at any time throughout the game.
The unexpected hero….
Kevin’s Kleaners is a small family business who until now have spent their lives cleaning windows in the local area. It was like any other day, cleaning Barbara’s windows when suddenly the Earth shook and black smoke filled the air. The nearby nuclear power plant had just ruptured. The unexpected tragedy meant that Kevin and his son had more important things to be concerned about. Little did they know that all of the professional cleaning companies in the area (that had been trained to deal with nuclear fallout) were already at the scene when the explosion happened. Due to unexpected circumstances they all died of exposure to the radiation following the blast.
A few weeks after the meltdown had been controlled, Kevin received a call from none other than the country's President! He told them that their country needed their help with cleaning up the nuclear fallout. He also said that it would be a dangerous task as other cleaners who had volunteered had been dying due to the radiation poisoning! But Kevin was not afraid, he grabbed his squeegee and bucket and he and his son raced towards the site of the power plant to face their biggest cleanup yet!
Kevin and his son were required to go beneath each city and clean up the water supply as it had been infected by the toxins spilled from the nuclear power plant. But it wasn’t as easy as it seemed….
Soon after the meltdown, the nuclear fallout started to do crazy things to dead or dying humans who had come into contact with the water supply, reanimating their corpses and turning them into Zeds!
So, with everything in ruins and zombies running rampant, the player must fight back the threat, taking charge of the finest military force on the planet, as decreed by the President. Their job is to protect the fearless clean-up crew with only the military’s best traps at their disposal.
We currently only have eight traps available in the demo, but we have many more planned for the finished game.
This is a cheap, low damage, weak trap available from the start of the game. If some Zeds move over it, they will take damage, and the longer they stay there, the more damage they will take.
This is a useful trap as it blocks the horde from moving past it until it is destroyed. It is fairly cheap, but it doesn’t harm the Zeds in any way.
This is used mainly in an emergency or if there are a group of Zeds all bunched up together. When used, it will explode after a number of seconds, damaging everyone in a small radius.
This is a fairly expensive trap, but can be key to helping you beat a level. The car must be placed in a wide space, but once down it will drive forward pushing back all zombies in its way. This will also damage them slightly.
The TNT is similar to the way the barricade works. It will block all attacking Zeds until it breaks, then it will explode, damaging all Zeds in a nearby radius.
This works similar to the Bomb, but it will only explode when a Zed walks over it.
This is a giant flamethrower that will damage all Zeds in front of a trap. It is very weak, though, so it is probably best to protect it using another trap.
This fires out an array of bullets towards the Zeds whenever they get close. It is very useful for a long range attack, however some Zeds can go under the fire of bullets.
Traps to come
- Lightning rod - A tesla coil that can be placed on the ground to zap all nearby enemies.
- Swinging Blade - This would be put on the roof and swing back and forth, slicing all Zeds in its way.
- Gas Grenade - This would be placed like the bomb, but it would release a gas cloud which would damage all breathing zombies.
- Stalactite - This would form naturally in the level, you would then have to click it and it would drop on the zombies heads.
- Air Conditioning Vent - This would be placed on the ceiling above where the Zeds walk. When they walk under it, they become cold and move slower.
- Digger - This can be placed at key resource points on the level, it will then mine these points and collect all of the scrap metal. However these key points would usually be on the path of the Zeds, so protect it well and it will reward you plenty!
In the demo, we show you six different Zombie models, but we are aiming to get around twenty weird and wonderful Zeds in the finished game. These will all have different abilities which make your struggle to clean even harder!
Each Zed will have its own name and we have decided to allow you guys to name one of the Zeds in the game as part of our Kickstarter backing. What could be better than killing an animated version of yourself, right?!
Once selected from our list of names, it will then save your favorite Zed names to your game so they will spawn every wave for you to kill.
In our demo, you can see these Zeds in action.
These Zeds make up the bulk of the horde. They are a slow moving, brain seeking Zed, but can still pose problems in large groups.
The Skeleton is a fast running Zed, and will quickly reach your defences. However, even though they are fast, they are very weak and don’t cause your traps much damage. It shouldn’t be too difficult to destroy these.
This is the Brute. This guy is tough and can destroy most traps in one hit! The only problem he has is that he is so big, so this means he moves very slowly. Try using that weakness to your advantage.
This is our worm. He is small and very weak, but because he is so small, he can dodge some traps. In the finished game, you will see these guys often coming out of the larger Zeds corpses.
In the finished game, you will also encounter a Zed boss at the end of each province.
We have a few designs which we are keeping secret for now, but we have allowed you guys to create a few of these if you back one of the pledges. However, the finished boss designs won’t be revealed until the game is finished.
The Lich will hover through the map spawning more zombies every so often, so its best to kill him quickly. Also, he dodges spikes!
This guy is insane! He will hop along attacking traps in its path. However every now and again he will stop and just laugh, for no good reason other than he is simply insane. He can also hop over some traps if there is room to get over. If he cannot get over he will just start head butting the trap. Due to the armour he is wearing, he sometimes doesnt get damaged by the traps.
Rotty will run up to barricades and blow up causing mass damage to your traps. Better keep this guy at range or you may loose the expensive traps.
Lots more normal zombie bits too!
If the Kickstarter passes, we will be releasing a mobile version of the game that should have all of the features that are available on the PC version. This will be released very shortly after the release of the PC version.
All people who supported us on the Game Tier and upwards will have access to a free download of the game once released.
The main game is going to be available from January 2015. If we do reach some of these stretch goals then they would take time to develop and may not be ready for when the game is release. We will however patch the main game to include these extras when they are complete at no extra cost.
New Maps – 25k
This will be a whole new Country with new levels for you to complete.
Customisation Options 40k
This will allow you to mix and match Zed parts to make your own custom Zed in game!
Play as the Zeds 60k
This would come as a DLC pack and allow you to play as the Zeds! Your objective is to overthrow Kevins Kleaners and stop them from removing the delicious toxic ooze from the area.
This is what we really want to be implemented into the game; however it would take a lot of time and effort to implement this. We would also need to hire a server in order for people to connect to. In this mode we would allow you to pick either the side of the zeds, or the side of Kevins Kleaners and you would battle it out to try achieve your objective.
Other Platforms 150k
We want to bring Zed Defence to as many platforms as possible and further stretch goals would allow us to consider bringing ports of the game onto all current platforms, including Wii U, PS4, Vita and Xbox One.
One of the main reasons we are launching this Kickstarter is we do not have an artist in our team. The art we currently have has been cobbled together from various sources and although it looks great we want our own ideas and designs to be in the game. With a professional artist on board, we can achieve that and make the game look a lot better.
The other reason we need it is because we are all broke... We are three friends who have just finished University with the dream of becoming game developers. We had the great idea of this game, and have been developing it full time for the past 3 months using everything we can find. The trouble is, all 3 of us are programmers, so art isn't our strong suit. The money we have used to live for the past 3 months has been savings and money from family, but the problem now is we have run out.
We REALLY want to continue developing this game as we are having so much fun, but we just cannot afford to keep working on the game at the rate that we are already. With your help we can keep on developing and make this game as kick ass as we are imagining.
Breakdown of costs
- Developer Costs = £9000
- Artist Costs = £2000
- Licence Costs = £600
- Audio Costs = £1000
- Kickstarter Costs and Tax = £2000
- Remaining money goes to merchandise and as a buffer just in-case we under budgeted.
Risks and challenges
Our major risk on this project is getting it done in the timeframe. We are aiming to have it done by the end of January at the very latest, but there could still be problems where we overshoot that deadline.
To overcome this problem we have set up weekly design, and development, plans for the entire development cycle. We have also allowed a lot of extra time at the end for any bug fixes or any problems that we find along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
