Of Drow Origin (Canceled)
An RPG module compatible with D&D 5E with extras like 28mm minis, maps, and other supplements to enhance your gaming experience.
Treachery. Secrets. Murder. It is a good day to be a Drow.
Of Drow Origin is a tale of intrigue and shifting loyalty. This one-shot module has a very high replay value, caters to new players and veterans, and features unique game play scenarios which ultimately resolve through PVP interaction.
This project contains a full package of goodies certain to appeal to all types of gamers, including a beautifully illustrated book chock full of unique content, miniatures, and extras that make this a grab-and-go solution for DMs.
The funding goal goes directly to pay the artists, sculptors, and designers to bring this project to life as well as all of the other production costs like casting, packaging, and various other promotional expenses.
The module is written for nine players and has an emphasis on roleplay. Each of the main characters has a background that provides just enough ambiguity to allow players to put themselves into the heads of their character while still making decisions that make each play-through different. By focusing on the roleplay, this game is appealing to both newcomers and veterans to the craft, while still keeping the power-gamers second guessing every choice.
The module is intended to be used in any setting and uses Dungeons & Dragons 5E rules, with the option to expand it to additional rule sets throughout the Kickstarter campaign.
I have played and continue to run this game at a number of venues, each time with huge success and different outcomes to the story:
- birthday parties
- bachelor parties
- private events at local game stores
My typical convention description:
"Matron Mother has learned that something of Drow origin was found in a human dwelling and sends her trusted daughters to personally attend to the matter. This story-based encounter, filled with intrigue and surprises, encourages roleplay and takes advantage of the ease of use found in 5th edition rules. Pregenerated characters fit for the scenario are provided." The game has been heralded by players at some of these events as "best game played all weekend" and has been compared to a Game of Thrones story with "surprises and twists at every turn."
The module is over 70 pages of amazing resources and art, including:
# GM Encounter Guide to spice things up when it gets too quiet
# Character Profiles with full game statistics, roleplay backgrounds, motivations, and beautifully illustrated images
# NEW Subclasses. These fully playable subclasses can be used outside of this module for your home games
- Blackguard - a Fighter subclass focusing on intimidation
- Circle of the Coven - a Druid subclass that chooses between White or Black magic
- Domain of the Spider Queen - a Cleric subclass custom fit to the Drow
# NEW items and equipment
# Variant Options to add additional levels of complexity, including a new form of spellcasting Sympathetic Magic, options for smaller or larger groups, and a new initiative system
# Easter Eggs How many can you find?
Between high resolution maps ready for online or tabletop play and printed goodies which make DM prep a breeze, the extras included are both quality and valuable.
# Sorn Manor map available in high resolution both digitally or as a vinyl print 48" x 33"
# Printed Extras for player aids. Standard Print-and-Play versions will be replaced by the higher quality versions once unlocked. Descriptions below are for the Premium Printed Extras.
- Item Cards which depict an image of the item with game statistics on the back printed on high quality poker cards
- Character Profiles printed on high quality 8x10 card stock with the game statistics on the front and roleplaying notes on the back, making game prep a cinch!
- Acrylic tokens to be used for unique mechanics utilized by the scenario.
Since the main characters are all predefined by the module, why not bring them to life with miniatures? I have some very talented artists working on these, which will be cast in lead-free pewter in 28mm fantasy scale. All models are supplied unpainted and some assembly may be required. Four of the nine main characters have already been sculpted and two more are in process. Sculpting and producing the models is where the bulk of the project cost is, but it has also been where I've had the most fun. Three more models are needed to complete the full character set and concept art is already done for several more NPCs and creatures. At launch, the planned stretch goals can take the project to as many as 16 miniatures!
Who wants to see an Aspect of the Spider Queen? She's not the Drider version you think you've seen before.
Some of the stretch goals and extras will be defined as the project progresses but I've got several ideas and want to hear from you on how to make this project even better. Let's make this the campaign you want it to be! # Art book that show off the development of the characters from sketch to mini.
# Additional NPCs created by the backer community
# Upgraded extras including acrylic counters and fully illustrated item cards
# More Miniatures!
# Novelized introduction to the scenario
# System Conversions
# VTT Support
# Resin terrain pieces for those that love the details.
Let's face it, some Kickstarters are just more fun to participate in than others. The ones I've enjoyed the most have always been those that made me feel like I was part of the process, not just a customer, and I want to replicate that here. The following participation challenges are immediately in effect:
Facebook Share Challenge. Pie in the face video. I'm a fun guy and what says "fun" more than watching someone take a gooey, messy pie in the face? For every 100 Facebook shares of the kickstarter link to this project I will open a Facebook survey for voting on the pie flavor that I will record having smashed into my face. The poll will be open for 24 hours and I commit to having a video of someone smashing it deliciously into my face within 24 hours thereafter. If we somehow managed 500 shares these videos would be livecast followed by a Q&A (likely while pie is still dripping off my face).
P.S. Blueberry is my favorite.
Facebook Page Likes Challenge. For every 25 Likes the Distracted Mind Games Facebook page receives after launch I will accept another submission for NPCs to allow backers to share in the creative process. Submissions will be surveyed after the Kickstarter project ends and I will select my favorites.to be added into the module (Maximum 50 NPCs).
Backer Count Challenge. System Conversion options. After this project reaches 200 backers I will send out a survey to decide into which additional system(s) you would like to see this module converted. At 500 backers I will offer another system conversion. If the fates are so good to me as to reach more than 500 backers and those backers want more systems than have already been established, we'll revisit this goal to determine capacity for more system conversions.
System conversions will only be available in digital format.
Thanks to the Artists
I want to make sure as much credit is given to these fantastic artists for all the work they have given to the project.

Shipping and Fulfillment
My intent is to make this project available to anyone in the world. Unfortunately this means a lot of shipping costs and variables about which I am inexperienced. Thankfully, I have some very experienced help behind me here.
Shipping will be collected through the pledge manager and will be based on actual costs. As a result, do not include funds to cover your postage payment in the pledge, since the Kickstarter and other fees are based on the total pledges received, thus you would end up paying about 10% more for shipping than necessary.
I am working very hard to provide cost-saving options for international backers including securing a relationship to do the casting, printing, and other fulfillment services in the UK and elsewhere. Based on similar Kickstarters, estimated shipping costs should be: US $10 to $15; Canada/UK/EU $15 - $30; Other $20 - $40. Your actual costs may be higher or lower depending on the type of shipping selected and your region.
The fulfillment date is a little longer than many similar Kickstarters, which is intended to be a conservative estimate to ensure I can meet the deadlines; there are a lot of moving parts and I want to be sure your expectations are met.
Risks and challenges
The module and layout are (near) complete, so all that remains are adding additional art, doing final edits, and adding any other enhancements generated by this project before it is ready for final print. Four of the minis are already sculpted and two more are awaiting quality inspection even before launching the project. Proof copies of the printed module and some of the stretch goal ideas are already in process to ensure the products meet my quality expectations and to expedite turnaround. This leaves three additional sculpts to be created, plus any of the additional content unlocked by stretch goals before production.
I have done my best to mitigate risks by planning and scheduling all the resources I would need in advance. Although this is the first project I'm launching, I am not new to Kickstarter and am able to anticipate some of the challenges based on my own experiences of backing similar projects.
In my day-to-day life I manage projects far more complex than this Kickstarter has been (although not nearly as fun). I am constantly monitoring the health of the project and will react where needed - if not to overcome the issue, then to communicate the issue and intended resolution to those that have supported me. My responsibility and commitment is to get a quality gaming product on your table, and I will do what it takes to make that happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
