Hi! My name is Sara, and I would love to tell you all about my latest passion project Fraidy-Cats!
Do you have a friend that calls you on your shit? You know what I am talking about, the one who listens to you whine about how stressed out you are because the laundry is piling up, and the kitchen is messy, and she looks you right in the face and politely suggests you just clean it up? I do. Mine is a Megan. I was complaining to her about my total lack of inspiration, and my desire to give up on doing art all together because of how bored I was. She looked me right in the face and said, "Ok, so paint something you don't think is boring"
I was flabbergasted. As a full-time artist, I've been consumed with the struggle of making art for money, instead of making money for art. I haven't made art for me in a long while.
I've been sitting on a few sketches and several ideas for over a year.
I love cats! My wife and I have 3! And I love horror movies too. What if I created a collection of paintings inspired by the scary movies I love, but instead of creepy dudes and monsters, I replace the villains with a cat? It could work. And I can do them all in watercolor, my favorite media, that I never play with anymore since I illustrate coloring books, and pet portraits using pens and markers (those are also great though, and I love them! Check out my Etsy- www.etsy.com/shop/pizzapetsandnonsense )
I picked up an old classic, and started reading! Wendy Torrance, played by Shelley Duvall is a dream! But in the book she was blonde- and she wore a pink robe. My new art project was on like Donkey Kong.
I shared my Shining piece through prints at my local growers market, and was surprised to see that my followers were as excited as I was for something new. More cat things!
The Shining is good, but we really can't love King without Bates, and so I was excited to paint a piece just for me reflecting a movie I love, alone, because no one would ever get the reference.
"Is that MISERY?!" all my new favorite people squeal!
I mentioned a cat-scary-movie-calendar and people demanded to make pre-order payments, and reservations.
A calendar really is a good idea.
And I have been wanting to make magnets.
And if I could have a calendar release party, with the original pieces available for sale, with a mobile cat adoption- That would be a dream!
Dreams do come true.
I was talking to a badass lady, telling her about my new project, and my ridiculous goals, and she said, "I've got you, just pick a date."
Now! With the help of an amazing brewery, I have a place! Because I do pet portraits, and am married to a dream-boat-hunk with great animal shelter connections, we partnered with a mobile cat adoption! This all means that near Halloween, you can get a beer, a 2020 Fraidy-Cats Calendar, and you can adopt a cat! And you can see all the fun I have been having with movie and cat research, with watercolor paints!
I'm very lucky. And I am very excited.
I am politely asking for help!
I want to print a bulk order of calendars for the year 2020, and I would love your help to do that! I think I have made some great packages for pledges, with things like coloring pages, and magnets, and calendars (Doi) but I have also added some higher valued pieces, like the original Fraidy-Cat paintings, and options for custom pet portraits!
This wall calendar will be in full color, and spiral-bound, using 100lb 8.5x11" gloss text with a drilled hole for hanging. Useful and fun, the dates will be easy to read, with day blocks sized for writing notes. Major US holidays and moon phases will also be included, with some non-major holidays, like National Pizza Day, and National Tabby Day! As an added bonus, there is a $75.00 tier, that gives you the opportunity to have your birthday added as a holiday!
I will feature 12-13 movies, depending on my cover design, and these movies will include gems like: The Shining, Misery, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein, Alien, Gremlins, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, and Evil Dead!
I hope this project and Kickstarter leads to a fun party, and a sweet calendar that makes watching the months fly by easy, fun, and filled with antic-ipation.
Thank you for your time!
Risks and challenges
I am also happy to assure you that your investment into this project is very low risk! This calendar will be made! My least favorite part- committing to the plan and layout has already been finished. I have chosen a printer with a proven track record of creating quality work, they already do all my printing so I trust them. Additionally I have have been running 2 Etsy shops for several years now, selling prints and original art. I understand the importance of customer service, and have shipped thousands of orders.
This my first Kickstarter! I feel confident in meeting the timelines posted on the rewards listed, barring any unforeseen setbacks due to quality issues, major shipping delays, or illness. I will keep our backers posted with regular updates should any delays arise.
