What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Welcome to sustainable beauty. My name's Lisa and I have been a Film Hair and Makeup artist for over 20 years.

I have partnered with the growers of Cacay Oil in Columbia to formulate and manufacture the ultimate sustainable beauty brand called Modern Apothecary.

The video above was filmed in Columbia and highlights the amazing work being done to produce this new miracle oil. I visited Columbia two years ago and was touched by this reforestation project being run to restore the forest and employ young people.

They are achieving this by growing Cacay Nut trees and selling the oil the nuts produce. The video above shows the inspiring award winning and innovative work Kahal are doing to produce this oil for a variety of uses. We have partnered with them to create ground breaking ethical skin and hair oils never done before.

The Magical Oil

The Cacay Nut trees harvest Cacay Oil all year round and the people of the Amazon have been using the nut oil for thousands of years. As I am a hair and makeup artist I took a sample of the oil back to London and began mixing it with various products testing it on over 100 women with various skin issues. I was blow away by how healing it is and the rejuvenating effects of the oil.

Cacay Oil gathers the best natural properties in cosmetics. It contains 50% more Vitamin E and twice the amount of Linoleic Acid than Argan Oil and has three times more Retinol than Rosehip Oil.

Cacay Oil is one of the highest in Vitamin E content that provides nutrition to cells and is a powerful antioxidant. Retinol is known as the anti-ageing vitamin, as it activates the skin's natural renewal process, promotes cell regeneration and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.

Cacay Oil contains around 75% of Linoleic Acid or as it is known to cosmetics "Vitamin F" which is the ultimate vitamin for dehydrated and dry skin. Derma Consulting in Germany tested the Cacay Oil in their laboratories and found the following, :-

Sustainable and Organic

Not only is Cacay Oil playing an important role in the restoration of the Amazon the range we have created is completely organic and sustainable. All three oils will be in glass bottles made from recycled glass. As we use glass we must protect with outer cartons. These are made from recycled paper. We use five mils per product of Cacay oil so for every 100 units we sell we estimate we can plant one young tree.

Making of the Three Key Products and There USPs

As an Australian born hair and makeup artist living in London, I’ve been very passionate about natural skincare since a young age. I grew up on a farm where Tea Tree Oil or Aloe Vera was the cure for everything!

When I began working on large feature films in London I was known to make cold face masks to apply after heavy prosthetic's had been on the face for long periods of time. This lead me to be involved in studying product development and gaining some work placement working for various global natural skin brands where I gained vast knowledge from formulating, licensing, bottling, shipping and logistics as well as the various exports regulations around the world. These journeys of discovery lead me to Cacay Oil and allowed me to formulate three amazing products.

The Products

I have called the range Modern Apothecary as we are taking ancient oil and formulating it to be used for modern skin needs.

Hair, Face and Body

A 50ml "dry oil" meaning it penetrates quickly. Halves blow-drying time on the hair and hydrates face. Recommended for dry areas on the body elbows, knees or decolletage. We found this product reduced and calmed a number of chronic skin conditions. Very popular on babies.

Face Hydrator and Primer

A light oil to be applied in the morning, pre makeup or instead of makeup to give the skin a beautiful dewy glow. Hydrates and protects from city pollutants as well as reduces pores. Can be mixed with makeup for flawless skin.   Key benefit of this product is viscous.  Unlike historic thick oils that struggle to penetrate the skin surface, our oils penetrate quickly and don't leave a surface residue.

Skin Elixir

Our ultimate anti-ageing product high in Vitamins E and A. Restores elasticity and offers lasting hydration. See below one of our skin story results of reduction in skin pigmentation and reduction of wrinkles. This was after ten weeks.

Please see our Instagram where we show the testing of the products and there amazing results - user name Modern_Apothecary_Company

Launch Strategy

I plan to launch and sell via an eCommerce platform initially and partner with one other prestigious website in the UK. Our website will ship globally at a reduced rate while we find other online partners in various countries to partner with.

As I am a hair and makeup artist many of my colleagues are using Modern Apothecary on films sets globally and take images for us to use on social media.

To create brand awareness our key focus will be to engage in social media and buying of social media to gain sales. We will also send the products to key skincare bloggers in Europe and the USA for review and recommendation.

Value

As we are selling direct to the consumer we are able to offer reasonable RRP’s on these (average £14.95) normally a product of this level would be retailed at a luxury price. As the products are concentrated one oil lasts about twelve weeks not the usual eight. This allows a wide range of consumer to enjoy the benefits of Cacay Oil.

Testimonials

Tara Hickman 49, UK Vogue celebrity makeup artist

Felt overall the oils were very luxurious and great value

Primer – loved. Best morning hydrator and primer ever. Put on after shower and loved how it penetrated the skin and left the skin feeling. Her favourite oil

Face Hair and Body –loved it for face, neck and body at night  Additional feedback – Likes the soft natural scents and the fact it’s not scented.

Sarah Fagan, 28 Film and TV Makeup Artist

The Face, Hair and body oil personally loved this the most for hair and body. My hair cannot take any styling products whatsoever- it breaks the hair and it makes it look very greasy immediately. The only exception to this is Oribe gold lust. I loved your oil for my hair. Super light and hydrating! No greasy effect hooray! And halved my blow drying time. Loved on the body how absorbent this was. Instantly sank in, yet left a comfortable hydrating layer on top- again did not feel greasy or wet

Summary

In summary as we sell these products online we will have the capacity to renew thousands of acres of destroyed forest, employ hundreds of young people in Columbia and offer an alternative to the use of Palm Oil. This is the ultimate sustainable consumer project and with your help we will be able to begin manufacturing. If we raise beyond our goal we will make more units for our first run.

Risks and challenges

Filling with an oil or manufacturing and selling online has a number of stability tests and licenses that are required for product safety and import and exports. Cacay Oil is licensed globally to use in cosmetics. The manufacturer I have located, who are able to bottle the oil are able to offer the required tests and export licenses as part of their filling service. I have worked in product development for over 10 years so have a vast understanding of this area.
