Hello, and welcome to the engrossing world of DYNASTY!
Are you the kind of person who appreciates complex, visually and emotionally rich horror films? Do you like your cinema closer to The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, or Empire of Passion than what we get from the current era of horror? Do you know and love the work of H.P. Lovecraft, but are frustrated by the fact that his particular tone is rarely translated well to the big screen?
Dynasty (or: Yog-Sothoth's Cautionary Tales for Young Adults) is a 60-minute Senior Thesis Film for SUNY Purchase's Conservatory of Film, Directed by Mac Smullen and Produced by Andrew Katz. The film consists of three vignettes and an epilogue, which act as eerie, sometimes horrifying parables for the major decisions we must face in life.
Before I entice you with the details of the tightly-knit plot, I'll get the asking for money out of the way.
The bottom line is, regardless of the length and caliber of this script, it is still a (as of now) completely self-funded production. Doing justice to the script and my main inspirations (Lovecraft, Stanley Kubrick, and my own fears and dreams) isn't easy on the budget of a full-time State School student.
This film was written with a small budget in mind. It WILL deliver Major Motion Picture Thrills for a tiny fraction of a Major Motion Picture Budget. Unfortunately, in our work on pre-production, I have come to accept that that fraction is not QUITE as tiny as I'd hoped. Various props, location fees, and other costs are pushing the bounds of our tiny, out-of-pocket budget to their very limits! We begin shooting Part One in late November, it takes place in a deserted mansion and our location is charging us way more than anticipated because they were treated with utmost disrespect by a NYU film crew, so time is of the essence!
This film was also written with a certain visual and stylistic aesthetic in mind. We plan to shoot on the HPX w/ the Letus Elite, which shoots in beautiful HD. In order to deliver YOU, our potential audience of discerning horror/drama/thriller fans, the quality you deserve, we have finally come around to reaching out into the infinitely generous and effortlessly kind world for a helping hand.
We are excited to update our old method of pass-the-hat fundraising to this sleeker, hopefully more efficient way of doing things.
Any dollar you can give will help. The more dollars you give, the MORE you help, you know how it works. Our goal here is not to make money. Our goal is to finally achieve something we've been striving for all our lives: to make a film we can truly be proud of, a film that brings the long-missing power of 60's and 70's contemplative horror into the modern age; in short, a film you will want to watch.
We can't do it alone. We need you. And if it helps to make up your mind, each donation we receive goes a little way towards staving off the eventual coming of Yog-Sothoth, the great and powerful inter-dimensional god who brings with him the Crawling Chaos and destruction of Reality as we know it.
PART ONE, Mask & Manor, tells the story of a young couple, THOMAS and JENNY, as they giddily play house in Thomas's massive, deserted family estate. But before the weekend is over, their relationship will be pushed to the brink as the true nature of the Drake Family Estate begins to reveal itself.
PART TWO, Dream & Deep Storage, follows JACK as his dream job slowly twists into a nightmare. An expert in Dead Languages recently out of Grad School, Jack jumps at the high-paying opportunity to translate ancient, occult tomes on-site at a Drake Corporation storage facility, but as his work progresses, isolation, strange dreams, and obsessive suspicions about the material begin to alienate him from those that matter most.
PART THREE, Doorway & Destiny, finds RALPH and ERICA on their way to look at their first apartment, a prospect which the good-natured but reluctant-to-commit Ralph finds incredibly daunting. When he stops for directions and has an ominous chance encounter with Walter Drake, the frightening Elder of the Drake Clan, Ralph is put on the path to what Walter calls his "true destiny". However from this moment on, Ralph's entire life becomes an increasingly surreal journey into the unimaginable: the Center of the Spiral.
