Do you think there could be more activities and things to do in Devon? We're a brother & sister duo who love food, drinks, and games, and we want to bring a Board Game Café to the South West!
We ran a trial of Board in Exeter between February to June of this year as a popup shop, and people loved the concept of a food & drink venue with board games. Now we need your help to relaunch Board as a permanent attraction, right here in the heart of the South West of England, and to do that, we're offering some exciting rewards.
What Exactly Is A Board Game Café Anyway?
If you didn't get the chance to come in and game at Board during our trial period, here's a quick rundown of how we work:
Board is like a normal café or restaurant—we have a menu of food, drinks, and even alcohol—but what makes us different is our shelves and shelves of board games for you to play! They range from the classics you'll play with your family, to fun and silly party games for a Saturday night, to the latest exciting adventure game to play with your friends.
A gaming session is £5 (or £4 for students, £3.50 kids, £3 for members). Once seated you're free to play as many games as you want, we can recommend you the most fun games to pick, and the best part? We can even teach you the games! No more wasting 2 hours of your life on rulebooks and fumbling through – we'll be on hand to give you an easy explanation of how to play.
We have a few hundred games on offer, and this number is constantly growing. Role Playing Games, Resource Management, Worker Placement, Co-operative Adventures... We're in a golden age of board gaming and we have the latest and most important titles. Whatever your taste, or age or number of players at your table, we have something for everyone.
A Better Board
When we opened the original pop-up for Board, we couldn't afford tables and chairs so we built them ourselves in just 10 days. This time we'll have a bit more flexibility and we'll be able to put our time and dedication into every little aspect of the cafe, really making it into an incredible venue for the city.
Our new location will be on South Street in Exeter next to the city centre. Those who visited us before will notice that we'll be staying on the same street (but we won't reveal which shop just yet!)
This new location will also be bigger which means we'll have space for a proper kitchen, which comes along with... yes, you guessed it: a whole new menu too! We're overhauling our menu and developing a range of gourmet sandwiches and sides, a great new dessert selection, and even a few new flavours of our famous milkshakes.
One of the other things we were known for were our two-tiered tables. Board games take up a lot of space, let alone adding food and drink into the mix, but with a whole new place comes whole new tables. Get ready for Board Tables 2.0! Our original two-tiered tables are now up for grabs as a pledge level, so if you want to get your hands on one of our bespoke tables, now's your chance!
Along with our relaunch, we're also excited to reveal that we'll be starting our own Youtube channel. We'll be producing gameplay videos, and other fun videos to keep you entertained. You can even get in on the action, as one of our pledge levels lets you join us as a guest gamer in one of our episodes!
Hosting tournaments and other themed evenings at Board is something we’ve had in the works for a while. Singles nights on Valentines Day, costume parties on Halloween, in fact, we may or may not already be planning a Geistes Blitz tournament in our opening month…
We don't want to set a concrete reopening date just yet, as we know there will be unexpected delays in such a big project. That said, September is an ideal time for us to re-open and we'll be aiming to get it fitted out and ready as soon as possible. We'll be keeping all our backers updated with regular reports on how things are going with the new place, including behind the scenes photos.
OK, Great, I'm sold! But why would I give you my money and what's Kickstarter?
Kickstarter's a way to fund projects by essentially pre-ordering things in advance to help the idea succeed. We're offering membership cards, T-shirts, meals, etc. but by pledging to our campaign right now you're playing an important part in helping us to fund the idea in advance to make sure it actually happens.
What happens to the money you pledge if the project doesn't meet its goal? The way Kickstarter works, is that only if the project successfully meets its goal (ours being £8,000), would the money be taken out of your bank account and a shiny membership card or T-shirt be yours. If for some reason we're unable to reach our funding goal by the end of our 30 days, your pledge will be automatically cancelled out. So you've got nothing to lose by making a pledge.
We're excited about the items we've come up with to offer those who decide to back us. All items you order will be available to collect from the cafe when we re-open this Autumn, and we'll send you an email to let you know when you can pick them up!
If there's a specific combination of items that we don't have available as a pledge level, send us a message detailing what you'd like and we'll do our best to give you the exact pledge combination you want.
If you'd like anything to be shipped, rather than picked up in person, that is not a problem. Please get in touch and we'll let you know cost of shipping.
Would you like to add some extra special goodies to your pledge? These can also make an ideal gift idea for family or friends!
If you want to customise your order to include any of the add-ons listed above, it's super simple:
- After selecting your pledge level, you'll be given the option to manually adjust how much you want to pledge.
- Simply calculate the total cost of add-ons you wanted and then increase your pledge by this amount. Then we'll ask you at the end of the campaign exactly which add-ons you were after.
- E.g., the Meal Deal for 2 pledge is £35. To get a Board T-shirt and poster too, you'd increase your pledge amount by £25 for the T-shirt and £10 for the poster, making a £70 pledge in total.

Risks and challenges
Planning and researching a big project essentially means nothing unless you've actually done it for real, and we have.
We've learned a lot of what to do and how to do it, and now we can bring that knowledge to life at the new location. The biggest challenge we currently face is financing the cafe to be as good as it can possibly be. We've set the minimum goal we need for this Kickstarter, but we'll also announce stretch goals if we exceed the minimum. This will allow us make more, exciting additions to the cafe.
Board was a great place to open in Devon, but now you have the opportunity to help us make it even better. We've lined up some great rewards for those who are pledging to help create the new Board. This project is also about the community surrounding Board, so helping us to spread the word to your friends and family is just as important!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
