The PageFlip Firefly is a wireless foot pedal for hands-free page turning on any tablet or computer. Simply open a digital file and press the pedal to scroll or flip pages in either the forward or reverse directions for convenient hands-free reading. Musicians no longer have to take their hands, or their focus, off their musical instrument to turn pages. Works with select apps on iPads and Android tablets, as well as any software on Windows/Mac computers.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The PageFlip Firefly emulates a standard keyboard and works with any software that uses keyboard strokes to navigate through digital files. The Firefly allows the the user to select among five modes for the dual pedals: PageUp/PageDown, Left/Right arrow, Up/Down arrow, Left/Right mouse click, and Space/Enter. Changing modes is as simple as pressing a button.
The Firefly now offers the user the option to reprogram the five preset modes so that each pedal can now transmit any desired key press or hotkey function. Simply download our free Windows/Mac software so that you can pair the pedal to a Windows or Mac computer for reassigning the pedal functions. Just press the Mode Reset button on the rear of the pedal to restore the factory settings anytime.
People with disabilities can easily connect their favorite external switch to the L/R auxiliary outlets on the PageFlip Firefly to trigger page turns. Sip-and-puff (breath-controlled) devices or Ablenet Jelly Bean pushbuttons are examples of popular switches available to people with disabilities. Musicians will, of course, prefer to tap the PageFlip Firefly, or a connected external pedal that can be plugged into the 1/8" mono outlets on the rear of the pedal.

The PageFlip Firefly is powered by 2 AA batteries or via an AC adapter. The batteries will last nearly a year with regular pedal usage. If you wish, you can plug the Firefly into a USB AC adapter, such as those included with cell phones and tablets. Just connect the pedal to the adapter using the included USB cable.

We have created several prototypes for the purpose of refining the look and feel of the Firefly pedal. Furthermore, we have been working on software to make the pedal programmable. We are still in the process of generating a Windows and Mac version of the programming interface. Other software issues to be completed include setting the Bluetooth timeout period to 30 minutes and making the pedal compatible with the new iOS 7 switch control. Once our Kickstarter campaign is successfully completed, we will use the funds to make the tooling and production run. The chief milestones are:
- the engineering prototype
- the Windows/Mac software to program the pedals
- the pedal firmware for controlling pedal functions
- FCC/CE/IC certification for wireless operation
The engineering prototype will embody the material, texture, and function of the final pedal. The Windows/Mac software will help the pedal achieve its unique programming feature. The pedal firmware will be necessary for implementing pedal functionality, including the 30-minute timeout period and iOS 7 switch control. The FCC/CE/IC certification is necessary before wireless devices can be sold worldwide. We have made significant progress in all these areas, as is evident in the early prototype shown above. Furthermore, we our prior work in designing, manufacturing, and distributing the PageFlip Cicada will help us enormously in this endeavor as it provides valuable experience and demonstrates our capacity to achieve these milestones effectively and expeditiously. We work closely with our contract manufacturer to guarantee the highest quality of output from each production run.
Risks and challenges
The PageFlip team has tested the functionality of our PageFlip Firefly pedal and it works great! We've asked musicians to test our prototypes and they have been very enthusiastic about the pedal and the impact it will have on their playing.
We are now finalizing the software for reprogramming the pedal modes and we are in the midst of gaining approval for our FCC, CE, and IC certification. We don't anticipate any serious obstacles since we are already experienced in mass production and worldwide shipping due to our experience in mass producing the PageFlip Cicada pedal. We work with a contract manufacturer to handle large volumes, and each production run is scrupulously supervised by us to make sure that quality control is held at a premium. We've gone through this road before and we expect no surprises with this new product.
