About this project
WHAT IS PROXIMAL DISTANCE?
Proximal Distance is a five-month long series of art shows organized primarily via internet by Cathy Alva Mooses and Caitlin Gianniny, based in Chicago and Boston. The series explores the intersection of physical and psychological distance as well the effect of technology on those perceptions.
The project developed out of a dialogue about the shared experience of discovering our home cities anew while maintaining close relationships at great distances. Aside from the physical changes our respective cities had undergone in the intervening years, we felt acutely the way time can act as a kind of distance, altering one’s social interactions. Rather than explore these observations in isolation, we developed this series as a platform for engagement.
WHAT ARE WE RAISING FUNDS FOR:
Since then, we self-funded the renovation of the space, art openings, lectures, community workshops and events. We held our first monthly exhibition in March. We are very excited to have recently been awarded a UChicago Arts Council Grant, but because of the amount artists involved in the series we are still in great need of your support to continue into the scheduled summer season. Like any arts organization, we depend largely upon the kindness of others for financial support. Without drawing a salary, we need your help to cover the costs of marketing, materials, artist fees, and building maintenance.
Our largest installation yet will take place at the end of July at the National Museum of Mexican Art along with a culminating publication for the series.
WHO WE ARE:
Participating artists and collectives include 3-art, Dan Borelli, Trey Burns, DADDY, Nia Evans, Guillermo Gudiño, Ivy Haldeman, Tomashi Jackson, Rose Khor, Louise Manifold, Andrejs Rauchut, Patricia Rose, Danielle Rosen, Martyna Szczesna and Georgia Wall; hailing from Boston, Chicago, Galway, Madrid, Mexico City, New York City and Oakland.
Cathy Alva Mooses, is currently an artist-in-residence with the Arts and Public Life Initiative at The University of Chicago. Last summer, she founded the Storefront Studio where the series is being held. Prior to that, she lived in New York for twelve years while studying and working at the Cooper Union School of Art. She will be attending Yale University in the fall for a Masters in Fine Art.
Caitlin Gianniny earned her BFA from Cooper Union in 2008. She is currently living and working in Boston where she has been involved with various projects such as ICE-POPS which will be featured in the Venice Architecture Biennial this August. She’ll be attending the Mind, Brain and Education masters program at Harvard Graduate School of Education next fall.
The two of us have a history of working collaboratively on self-organized projects in Latin America, teaching handwork in a Salvadoran village in 2006 and setting up a small-print library and temporary workspace at the Havana Biennial in 2009. This project is the first time however that we have worked primarily at a distance.
Please help us to continue our summer programming.
