GOAL 2: Produce Series 2 (10x 5min eps) and take these stories to kids all over the world. I believe we're onto something powerful that will inspire kids around the globe to love our ocean! We have HUGE plans
UPDATE: WE'VE RAISED THE $20 000 NEEDED FOR GOAL 1, NOW WE'RE TARGETING GOAL 2.
Series 2 will have an international flavor. We want to have episodes in the Pacific Islands, NZ and Australia.
To make the first 2 episodes of Series 2 we need to raise another $27 000. (Above the current $25 000)
If we can get 1080 people purchasing just one $25 reward we’ll have our target of $27 000. This goal is in reach – and with your help we can get there!

ABOUT YOUNG OCEAN EXPLORERS
Taking my 13yr old daughter, Riley on adventures into my world, we’ve searched for some of the largest, scariest and most incredible sea creatures that live in NZ's ocean. Meeting leading experts and telling fun stories with beautiful images, the reviews have been amazing and everyone LOVES Riley!
We're also incredibly stoked that Air New Zealand has picked up the series to be screened on their in-flight entertainment…..no small honour!
It's been called entertaining education by teachers who have used the episodes in their classes with rave reviews. We think we’re onto something incredibly powerful that can change the way kids think and act towards the ocean.
OUR NEXT STEP
We’ve just started producing the Young Ocean Explorers book & DVD and want to get a copy of them into every school in New Zealand and the Cook Islands.
THAT’S APPROXIMATELY 2560 SCHOOLS!!
We need the final $20 000 to make this ambitious plan a reality. Once we reach this target all money will go towards making Series 2
NEWS AND UPDATES
# Aug 31st We've reached our target! What happens now? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1062176248/young-ocean-explorers-book-and-dvd-into-every-scho/posts
WHAT’S IN THE BOOK?
Targeting 8-13 yr olds, but appealing to an audience both young and old, the book (approx 104 pages) will carry on with the same fun style from the TV series and will continue the visual spectacle with stunning photography from multiple award-winning photographer, Richard Robinson (recent awards – 2014 ‘Press Photographer of the year’, 2013 ‘NZ Geographic Photographer of the year’). Check out some of his incredible work here: www.depth.co.nz
A professional writer will add their touch to our thoughts, as we go into more depth with a chapter on each creature featured in the series - With a Kiwi and international perspective on each species. Inspiring interviews with each expert will encourage kids to be confident and optimistic about their future. There'll also be behind the scene glimpses into the filming of Young Ocean Explorers and plenty of additional material.
It's going to be an awesome book! And will be an invaluable resource for every school library in NZ and the Cook Islands…. and kids the world over!
YOUNG OCEAN EXPLORERS STORY – HOW DID IT START?
Young Ocean Explorers actually came about through Riley's school project! She produced, well…..actually "we" produced!! an interview with a turtle expert about the issue of sea turtles eating plastic. Using my underwater footage cut together with her interview, everyone at her school loved it!
Seeing the response of so many kids, my mind started reeling with what a powerful tool this could be to inspire them about the magnificence of the underwater world and to get them emotionally engaged with it
I asked Riley, "Would you like to make more of these videos?" She replied enthusiastically "YES!”, Instantly firing back “We could do.… Sharks, Orca, Maui's dolphins…" and Young Ocean Explorers was born!
Since then it's been an incredible journey for my wife Jo and our family. To cut a long story short we received some funding from a ‘Dragons Den’ type contest, where I pitched the Young Ocean Explorers idea and won, and also the Environmental Initiative Fund from the Auckland City Council as well as self-funding to produce the 10 episodes.

Episode #4 Orca - Young Ocean Explorers
The underwater world is spectacular and unique and it needs to be looked after. I reckon that inspiring a kid can change a life forever and that today's kids are more concerned about the environment and believe they can make a difference. The impact of those kids on families, schools, and communities, will change our relationship with the ocean for a better future.
So, this is where you come in!
We really appreciate your support to make whatever size pledge you can... to help us inspire kids to love our ocean.
THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING- WE HAVE A MASSIVE VISION
I THINK WE'RE ONTO SOMETHING INCREDIBLY SPECIAL WHERE WE CAN MAKE STORIES TO IMPACT KIDS AROUND THE GLOBE - I'M ALREADY MAPPING OUT STORIES FOR SERIES TWO AND BEYOND. I HAVEN'T BEEN BACKWARDS IN SAYING THAT I HOPE WE FAR EXCEED OUR TARGET, SO WE CAN PUT THE REST OF THE MONEY TOWARDS MAKING MORE STORIES IN NZ AND FURTHER ABROAD!
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT YOUNG OCEAN EXPLORERS
From a Dairy Farmer who watched episode 6 on Harbours
“To be able to see all the amazing footage and what life there is, and to be able to pass this on to the next generation was truly inspirational and changes my perspective….The footage had more of a positive impact on me than sitting in on seminars and reading farming magazines about environmental problems and issues.”
Wade and Jan Doak (NZ underwater and conservation legends)
“Jan and I are Riley’s biggest fans….we always find the same, consistent level of engagement Riley attains in her viewers. She could make drying paint exciting. So, with your (Steve’s) superb undersea filming and the snappy presentation of each item, this is a landmark in natural history TV, anywhere in the world. Extraordinary, says Jan.“
David Macleod, Principal of Mahurangi College.
“We've been privileged to trial the 'Young Ocean Explorers' video series in our school. The students have responded very positively
Today’s students of course are digital natives and visual media is the way to connect with them.
We would be very pleased to continue using this series in our school and I’d like to think it would be made available to other schools throughout the country.”
Rebecca Fawcett, Producer ‘What Now’
“Young Ocean Explorers - education through entertainment….. We are great supporters of the Hathaways.”
Risks and challenges
"If it was easy everyone would be doing it!" I've survived on this saying for the last 8 years, since giving up the security of my construction business (and the only work I'd ever known) to pursue my passion and make underwater stories, we've had plenty of incredibly tough times when it would have been easy to quit.
We have a track record of not quitting and finding solutions to problems - when somethings worth doing it's worth fighting to make it happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
