UI Mockups for Windows RT

Dear backers,

following up on last night's Update #2, today, we would like to share two additional mockups with you to give an idea how this new port of VLC will actually look like on Windows RT tablets.

You can find the full resolution imagery here and there.

Thanks a lot for the positive feedback we received so far and we are looking forward to more!

@Magnetro Chen: we will welcome early feedback :)

As the project start from the early stage I think it would be good if everything is planned well, the current mockup haven't including some detailed UI maneuver like how the playlist is handled and the flow for every deeper controls in the Windows 8 Modern environment. The "Metro" is a design language of the Modern interface and to fully speaking that well really requires some work to making that happen. The Modern UI sometimes have the "too simple as it looks and hard to go deeper" problem in the UI maneuver. I think you all will do that well and in the end of the day we could see a great "Modern" VLC player as the standard of all Modern application in the future and stand out for the name of "VLC" - the best media player of all time!

Thanks for the efforts. Could you make the background customizable? That would be cool.

Glad to see you're using Windows 8 tablets in your renders now and not Android ;)

Holy moly, the UI mockups look awesome!

    12. Creator Mike Neill on December 19, 2012

It is very Zune like. Looks good. I agree with some of the suggestions below in having the controls in the menu bar on the bottom.

Not sure about the tabs though, could be one of those things you need to try to see what is the most usable.

Sticking to design standards for windows 8 apps but still making it your own.

Looking forward to using your app!

Thanks for the hard work and merry christmas!

One think I would love as an addition is Last.fm scrobbling for music. But other wise the UI looks great so far!

I think the design doesnt reflect the metro design language very well.

      1. You should show the open file, url, disc only on a right click or when you swipe from the bottom up in the bottom menu.
      2. The same goes for the home, music, movies,... Show them on right click in the top menu
      3. No need for play, pause icons next to a file. Make it like in Xbox music when you select a file with a swipe to the right show a file command window on the bottom of the screen.
      4. No need for a last played section as long as you mark files as played (especially important with tv episodes). Instead show the recently added files.
      5. Show album art for music next to the file. Most of us have added album art to the folder the file is in or/and to the id3 tags.
      6. I really hope you can implement a playto function via the charms menu.

Thanks a lot for your efforts to bring a decent media player to win8/rt/wp8. Will be my number one app on win rt and wp8 but overall I hope the design gets much better during development.

I think it's great. I have some feedback. In my opinion:
      1. The "VLC Media Player" text on upper left corner should be bigger. For a sample, just look at the Start Screen of Windows 8 and compare them with group icon headers and "Start" label.

      2. I think in the "Home", "Music", "Movies", etc. should be available either in the tabs or the group headers. I'd suggest to show them only on the tabs (or maybe move them to app bars, like Modern IE does), and group the Movies, TV Shows, etc. based on some categories such as the folder name...

      3. I think the program structure of XBMC is a good starting point (but not perfect) for VLC. I think, with a combination of what I see (this mockup), XBMC and the controls and concepts of Metro (Modern) UI, this could be the best media player ever. And although I love desktop apps, I'd switch to this as the main player, especially for watching movies/TV Shows.

      4. I think having the same core and a good relationship with the desktop version of the VLC, would be an awesome feature. Currently Google Chrome has such feature, but not perfect (the UI isn't good, etc.). For instance, sharing same settings, recent files, profiles, etc.

Overall, I think this will be one of the best apps of Windows Store and the Metro UI's show offs.
Thank you a lot for this great software. I'd help more if I could, believe me.

Will Play To be supported through the Devices Charm? That would be great!

    20. Creator Ebby Peter on December 19, 2012

      Wonderful... The mockups looks great...
One question thou is how will VLC understand some of the video files are movies and others are TV series...

    21. Creator Steve Hansen on December 19, 2012

This will be awesome on my Surface RT :D Can't wait
