Finally, you’re free to lose the Armband!
For the better part of a decade we’ve been condemned to a purgatory of carrying our electronic devices in a fitness armband, the pocket of our shorts, or for women, their sports bra! FitHolster will put an end to the burden of mobile technology and open the gate to fitness freedom.
For those of us that lift weights or engage in any other intense physical activity, there are two (un)popular “solutions” for carrying our smart phones or mp3 players, the fitness armband or your shorts pocket. Neither solution provides the freedom, comfort, or protection we need for our active, and now very connected, lifestyle.
There’s only one thing YOU need other than some weight and a stretch of pavement, YOUR music; YOU want to listen to YOUR music while YOU lift; you refuse to wear an uncomfortable, impractical armband; and it’s only a matter of time before you either crush your phone with a barbell, or destroy it from soaking it in sweat. It all ends here!
"I love it! It works great, It couldn't have been designed better!" - Ronnie Coleman (8 consecutive Mr. Olympia Bodybuilding Championships)
The World's first and ONLY ergonomic, attachable fitness case for your electronic device
As a group, fitness enthusiasts have the world over have pretty much rejected the armband, but for some reason corporations are still trying to shove that thing down our throats, preying on those new to fitness.
FACT: The armband functions exactly the same as a tendonitis splint, designed specifically to limit full range of motion, and to prevent you from lifting heavy weight; not what you want for the weight room.
People are so desperate for a legitimate solution that they’ve gone so far as to invent ankle bands, forearm cuffs, necklaces, fanny-packs, belts, and even GLOVES; sadly, these noble/desperate attempts to the armband “to bed” have proven just as ridiculous as the armband itself.
In the meantime, most of us have had to make due with our shorts pocket. The armband is so impractical and uncomfortable that we actually shove our phone into our SWEATY pocket with our dirty, sweaty palms, only to risk CRUSHING it with a heavy barbell as we pull it towards our hips.
I still haven’t addressed the fact that most athletic shorts don’t even come with pockets because the extra fabric makes them too bulky and not suitable for most fitness activities.
This is especially the case for women. Faced with the choice between an armband and either a fanny-pack, belt-clip, or simply wedging their phone in between their waistband; you’d be shocked how many latter…
All of this, just to escape the torture of strapping a neoprene case to our arm.
Why FitHolster is the ONLY fitness accessory you'll need
- Ergonomically designed from the top down, with the help of an Orthopedic Surgeon, FitHolster is engineered for athletic performance, designed to move and work with your body’s natural range of motion.
- PATENTED Reversible Magnetic Clasp positioned above the protective case to allow your electronic device to move unrestricted with your hip joint.
- High Quality, Super Strong Neodymium Magnets measured to hold tight for even the most explosive of movements.
- UNLIMITED Range of Motion unlike belt clips that fall off every time you squat or bend at your hips, we’ve positioned our performance case just below the crease of your hip; never again wedge your device between your hip and upper thigh.
- Form Fit, Sweat Proof, High Quality Neoprene designed for SUPERIOR protection from dirt, sweat, heat, and cold.
- Ultra Responsive, Clear, Protective Window allows you to operate your device in position and with the protection of the case; stop covering your phone in dirt and sweat every time you change the volume or change a song.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE...
Don't Lift? Doesn't matter, we didn't create the only fitness accessory you'll ever need ONLY for weight lifters; we created the ONLY fitness accessory you'll ever need, period.
- PERFECT for RUNNING and CARDIO! Reversible magnetic clasp to wear on the inside of your shorts for RUNNING! You can even attach the magnet to a TREADMILL, STAIR-STEPPER, OR SPINNING BIKE!
- CROSS-FIT Functional Training and as a wrestler my entire young adult life, I've trained with the same explosive, functional lifts since high school. This product is designed for the most intense training.
- Ideal for Yard Work like Mowing the Lawn on those hot summer days when a good audiobook or a little music might make the time go by much sweeter.
- Rock-Climbers/Skiers/Snowboarders: Due to our ergonomic design, you can now safely, and effectively, attach your electronic device, no matter what it is, to yourself or your gear; you may want your camera or some other mobile application when you reach the summit.
- Outdoorsmen/women, Hikers, and Trail Blazers: Need a GPS, a solar and lunar times clock, trail maps if you get lost, calls, or maybe you just want to have a camera on hand for the trophy Bass or Boone and Crocket Whitetail. Don't spook another deer fishing around in your pockets to get the phone you forgot to put on silent.
This is the story of how a shattered smart phone and a magnetic money clip led to the creation of the greatest fitness accessory on the market…
It was 5:30 in the morning, and just like every morning, I spent it frantically searching for a clean pair of shorts with pockets for my afternoon workout.I had just bought a new iPhone 5, and I loved it, I was terrified it would end up like my last phone, crushed, in my sweaty pocket, under a heavy barbell, as I dropped the weight to my hips after a Hang Clean.
Sadly, this wasn’t the first time I had ruined an electronic device in the weight room.
My first iPod lasted a while, but continuously pulling it out of my sweaty pocket with my dirty, sweaty palms eventually destroyed the electronic components and I couldn’t even turn it on.
If that weren’t enough, I bought a new iPod Nano, but I ended up crushing that small device as I went to rest some very heavy dumbbells on my hips before leaning back on the bench.
Since it was a barbell that cracked the screen of my last smart phone, I decided to buy an expensive “Otter Box” protective case to keep from crushing my new one, but the peace of mind was really a tradeoff, I felt like I was carrying a brick in my pocket.
I ended up finding a pair of clean shorts that morning, but the frantic search placed me on the wrong side of Dallas rush hour, and I had a solid hour and a half to think about how I was going to fix this ludicrous problem once and for all.
As I set out that morning to brave the notorious Dallas/Fort Worth traffic, I was determined to find a solution to my problem, I was never going to have a morning like this again, and I literally couldn’t afford to ruin this phone like the others.
As an actuary, I was a professional problem solver, and just like any other problem, I needed to list and solve every piece of the problem, if not, I might end up with an ankle bracelet…
- Waistband – I needed the ability to attach it to my waistband, any other part of the body was either impractical, uncomfortable, or would require a “band” attachment, and that was unacceptable.
- Adjustable – Ihad to be able to MOVE my phone away from the path of heavy weights, and different lifts would require different positions. I also wanted to be able to secure the excess earphone cord so it wouldn’t get caught during my lift and/or run.
- Attachable – I never wanted to have to purchase or search for another pair of shorts with pockets again; therefore, I needed to be able to attach and detach the device.
- Ergonomic – The device would need to allow for the full range of motion of the hips, not only for weight lifting (Squats, etc.), but hip mobility is an ABSOLUTE requirement for just about any physical activity.
- This meant the device could not be rigid like a belt clip, flying off as it’s becomes wedged between your hip and upper thigh; it needed to be FREE to fall by the front, rear, or side of the hips.
- Protective/Sweat Resistant – I wanted to be able to operate my device with ONE hand and NOT have to remove it from its sweat-proof, protective casing, I needed to be able to operate the screen AND the buttons without taking it OFF my waist band, and with one hand, drop it back to position.
I quickly became aware why this problem had not been solved yet; why the armband was the prevailing market solution, but I was resolute in my determination to find a real solution.
I imagined a pair of shorts that had another band around the waistband that I could sew a pocket to that would allow me to slide the pocket around the band, but for obvious reasons I quickly scraped that idea.
I thought about sewing a Velcro band around the waistband of my shorts that I could use to stick a Velcro pocket to; therefore I could move the pocket around, but still, I’d have to have Velcro shorts to use the pocket.Closer, but still not the solution I needed.
When I arrived at the parking garage, I reached into my glove compartment and noticed a magnetic money clip. It seemed too good to be true. Were magnets the solution to the problem that plagued me and most everyone else in the fitness community for the last 15 years?
From an Expert Risk Mitigator to Professional Risk Taker...
I raced home at the end of the day to gather what I needed to build a working prototype; at this point I still didn’t know if my idea was even practical?
I went to a fabric store to buy some neoprene to create a case but they didn’t have any.Defeated, I decided to buy some candy, as I reached for some gummy bears I noticed a fitness armband; yeah, in a fabric store?
It all came together, all I needed to do was cut the “band” from the armband case, sew a magnet on each end of the band, and then sew one end of the strap to the top end of the case from the armband. Now I could easily fold the strap over my waistband, the magnets would connect, and with one hand I could move it around my waistband.
I had just created the first FitHolster, it was truly an amazing feeling to solve this problem that had been plaguing me for years, and in such a clever way.
I never went to the gym without it, and as time went on, more and more people began asking me where I got, what I now call, my FitHolster. Their eyes lit up when I explained my simple solution!
People actually wanted to buy one! it was heartbreaking to have to tell them, "sorry, I don't sell them." I was an actuary, not an entrepreneur. Actuaries mitigate RISK and minimize exposure; quitting a respectable, stable job with great pay in favor of the uncertainty of entrepreneurship was counter to what I had just spent years in school trying to mitigate myself. I had an enormous decision to make.
Did I have enough faith in FitHolster to risk my future and everything I had worked for my entire life? I knew the answer to that question long before; the real question was "did I have the guts to take ACTION?"
Getting FitHolster into the hands of the people who need it, YOU guys and girls!
In short, I ended up resigning from my position as an actuarial analyst at my company. It was difficult, not because I second-guessed my decision, I did NOT, but because I respected those I worked for so much that I needed them to know it was something I had to do, I was not quitting, but rather, following my heart.
In the weeks following my departure, I scoured the Internet for manufacturers who would be able to turn my prototype into a commercial product. I finally found a manufacturer and went through a prototyping process that, to say the least, was heart wrenching. The samples I received were functional at best; they surely did not look like a professional product.I was disillusioned but knew I had to keep taking action.
I sent an email to a product development company out of Utah one day on a whim, not expecting much in the way of a reply, I continued my work on the samples I had. However, one afternoon I received a phone call.It was the most important moment of my journey thus far.
The gentleman I spoke to shared my vision, he knew exactly where I wanted to go with FitHolster, and the best part, he already had a manufacturer he trusted to make it. Soon enough we had our first set of product samples, and I was blown away!We had our product, and it was PERFECT!
Why Kickstarter, this isn't Amazon?
The gentleman helping me on the manufacturing end was just as enthused as I was about the FitHolster and loved the idea; however, he knew I was unprepared for how much it would cost to bring the product to market.
He knew I didn’t have enough capital for a big launch, and since I needed a video anyways to showcase such a new product, I could instead make it a Kickstarter video.Since I was such a new company, I had neither corporate credit, nor corporate references; I would have to pay the manufacturer up front, and in full. This is in addition to ALL the tooling costs and material that I would have to fund in advance as well.
Then the iPhone 6 launched… The “iPhone 5” FitHolster is made to fit ALL smart phone models except the large Samsung and Windows phones. It will not properly fit the new iPhone, nor will it fit those phones with the large “Otter Box” style cases.I will need a stronger magnet AND I would need to create one more size. So, considering all of this, Kickstarter was my best and most likely, only option.
I’ve taken FitHolster as far as I can on my own.I’ve done literally everything I can thus far, and only need a little financial support to get us over the top.I wanted to make sure I was in a position to deliver on my promises to my backers before I even thought about soliciting their support.
I have reached that point, I have enough to fund a large portion of what we need for our first production run; however, we are just a little short after the help of immediate family and friends. It may not seem like we need much, but that is NOT including ALL I am funding out of my own pocket; I feel the project creator should bear a portion of the burden too.
With your support, we will be able to immediately place our manufacturing order, and I pledge to fund the airfreight of your rewards so that you all can get them in a reasonable amount of time.
EVERYTHING is set up and ready to go, my manufacturing contact has been working his butt off to make sure this goes smoothly, together we can make it happen.
UPDATE: Why You DO NOT want the magnet at the bottom?
There is a formal update regarding this, but I think it's important enough to have in the project description to show how seriously we took the design and functionality of the FitHolster.
The best way to demonstrate this is for you to try it yourself. Go ahead and hold your smart phone up to your hip vertically and just below your waistband. Hold one finger of one hand on top and one finger of the other hand on the bottom Now, try and bend at the waist like you're sitting in a chair. Not too comfortable, right? Your phone was fixed, like it would be with a magnet at the bottom, severely limiting your range of motion.
Now try this, remove that bottom finger but keep your other finger at the top. Bend down again. Notice how the phone is no longer being wedged between your hips and you can bend down unimpeded from the device.
You would also experience this issue with the FitHolster on the back of your waistband. However, in this case when you bent down, the case would be stretched to the point that if there were a bottom magnet it would either give way or pull your shorts down.
You Have the Opportunity to Change the Way the WORLD works out, and that's Pretty Cool!
YOU will see the results of YOUR support every time you walk into a gym and see someone doing a hang clean, listening to their headphones, you’ll notice their FitHolster and realize that’s your product! YOU were just as pivotal in bringing this product to market as ANYONE else, including myself. That’s the beauty of Kickstarter, it gives us the opportunity to influence our market for once.
FitHolster is a unique opportunity to be a part of something big, something that will force corporations to re-think how they relate to customers.I hope you all enjoyed our story, and I look forward to working with all of you in the weeks to come. Please tell all of your buddies to come see us so they can finally lose that awful armband.
I thank you all SO very much for your support, knowing we have so many people that believe in us and our product, that is the MOST rewarding part of this journey for me.
“The best way to complain is to create something better,” let’s make sure they hear us!
Risks and challenges
We at FitHolster have a great deal of respect for our backers and the faith they have in our product and our company. We feel it is our obligation to reciprocate the trust our backers have in our ability to fulfill our promises that absolutely everything that could be done leading up to our campaign has been done; more importantly, we've invested all we had in order minimize any and all "surprises" along the way.
We have spent the last three months anticipating some unique challenges that we might encounter after our project is successfully funded, and made sure that tested our processes to ensure all that could be done has been done.
For example, we knew we were not going to be able to fund the initial production run ourselves; however, we decided that we could fund the prototyping, and more importantly, solicit the BEST product development company to help us secure a TRUSTED manufacturer that had the capacity to fulfill well over our highest projections of our Kickstarter pledges in product with the highest standards in quality.
In addition, we recieved different quotes for sea and air shipping, and we weighed the pros and cons of each, and we decided it was worth it to cover the cost of "air freight" for our backers to ensure there is no damage during ocean shipping, but more importantly, to ensure our backers would receive their rewards in HALF the time. Also, in case there is an issue during the shipping phase, the air freight option will allow us a great deal of time to sort out any issues that may arise and still deliver on time.
Finally, we made the difficult decision to pay a "down payment" on our order in raw materials to ensure that as soon as our campaign is complete our manufacturer will have the capacity in materials to fulfill any amount of orders. Again, we figured it was our responsibility to show our backers that we were VERY committed to our project and ensuring it succeeds, and what better way than putting our money where our mouth is...
However, this does not account for how we will tackle any problems that do arise, as whatever can go wrong will, we leveraged our relationship with our product development partner to be the in-between between us and any stage in the supply chain.
Our partner is an expert in product development, and we sought their counsel in anticipation of our Kickstarter campaign acknowledging that we did not yet have the experience to efficiently tackle all that could potentially go wrong, though we had any of the larger mishaps covered, we wanted to cover all of our basis. Thus, we will have expert support if anything were to arise that could get between our backers and their rewards.
In short, prior to launching our campaign we ensured we had completed all of our product testing, sourcing, manufacturing, and shipping. We even sought out the help of an expert to help with anything we did not anticipate. We made sure to leave everything on the field so to speak to prove to our backers that we are 100% committed to following through with our promises. This is our baby, and this is our chance to fulfill a dream that almost evaded me and my team. The dream to take control of our own lives and to put our hearts into what inspired us.
We cannot wait to share our work/art with the Kickstarter community, and as a thank you we have dedicated 5%-10%, depending on how much of our goal we are able to realize, to fund other Kickstarter projects that inspire us as FitHolster inspired you all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
