Greetings from the “Best Laid Plans” Department!   It’s with much excitement, and a great deal of relief, that we announce that “Remember the Sultana” documentary and extras DVDs and Blu-Rays are finally shipping!!  And here’s the proof:

Once again, you have demonstrated great patience with us as we have been preparing for the final act in this two-and-a-half year odyssey.  It took longer than anticipated, but you will soon be holding in your hands the story that had to be told.  There are not adequate words for the love and gratitude we have for you all for making the project possible.  You are an intimate part of this documentary, woven into the fabric of a great tapestry depicting the worst maritime disaster in U.S history.

Merry Christmas and the happiest of Holidays to our Sultana friends!!

2015 has truly been a momentous year, one that my brother and I could not have imagined when we started working on the Sultana documentary 13 years ago. We have experienced a lot of joy and heartache during those years, but we made it thanks to each and every one of you. We both realize that none of this would be possible without your continuous encouragement and support. You have been the greatest gift we could receive. We hope that what we return to you serves as a lasting testament to your support over the past 18-20 months.

Rewards continue to be mailed out. We realize that the process has taken much longer than anticipated and that some of the packages are missing items such as DVDs, etc. However, we will begin addressing those items after the first of the year.

This week, one of our backers, Sarah Monroe, tweeted this adorable photo with the caption “Even the smallest of backers are excited to share the story of Sultana.”

We want Sarah to know how much that photo and those words mean to us as we work to get our backers all of the rewards they have been promised. Thank you, Sarah!

The score to “Remember the Sultana” is now available on Spotted Peccary Music as a digital download. If you are interested in hearing Michael Allison’s unique and haunting music for the documentary, please order at

This year, both the Sundance and Slamdance film festivals received a record number of submissions. Unfortunately, our documentary did not make the final cut for either festival. We realize that this is no reflection on the quality of our film; indeed many excellent documentaries, some by well-known personalities, did not advance either. We are still entered in the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.  We should know if we have been selected sometime in January. We are also entered in the Palm Springs Documentary Film Festival and the AFI Documentary Film Festival, taking place in June in Washington D.C.

We look forward to sharing much more with you all in 2016 – including the movie! Again, thank you for your unwavering patience as we navigate through these uncharted waters of film festivals and potential distribution deals. We are humbled and grateful.

All of us associated with Remember the Sultana wish you a joyous and productive New Year!

Mark Marshall

Happy Halloween!

Hope everyone is celebrating in a safe and tasty way.I know I am: I just made a boo-logna sandwitch!  This update promises no tricks and a treat at the end.  Here is the latest Remember the Sultana news:

REWARDS continue to ship.  We estimate that about 80% of the backers have received their items. If you have not received your items yet, please know that they will be in the mail very shortly – we promise!  As always, we are so grateful for your patience with us!

FILM FESTIVALS – In addition to the Sundance Film Festival mentioned in the last update, Remember the Sultana has also been entered in the Slamdance Film Festival (held about the same time as Sundance) as well as the American Documentary Film Festival to be held in Palm Springs in March.  We will also be entering the film in SXSW (South by Southwest) Film Festival which will take place in Austin, Texas in March. We will let you know as soon as we hear back from these prestigious festivals.

And now for the TREAT: In March, our intrepid Co-Executive Producer, Narrator and official Ironman, Sean Astin, wrote down his thoughts after viewing a rough cut of the documentary. In April, he recorded those impressions. We are proud to present the following exclusively for our backers. The clip features composer Michael Allison’s music from the film.
