Our brain functions better when it gets the right light, sounds and sleep.
Beacon is a compact multi-sensory cube that monitors air quality, mimics daylight and plays your favourite sounds.
Beacon monitors your environment's air quality, letting you know the room's conditions including pollutant levels, temperature and humidity.
It is also a bio-rhythmic light that mimics daylight conditions, helping you wake and sleep better.
With built-in high fidelity speakers, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, enjoy Beacon's gentle waking alarms and play your favourite music and sounds.
The smartphone app provides you with real-time status on your air quality and ability to control other Beacon settings, anytime and anywhere.
Roughly 1 in 3 adults do not get enough sleep. We need at least seven hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. Without it, we face increased risk of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and frequent mental distress.
Multiple factors affect how good a night’s sleep we get, and these are multiplied significantly for those in urban environments. Air, light and sound pollution all affect how quickly we fall asleep, whether we’re disturbed in the night, and the ease of breathing.
So, we set out to design and build a new smart device that would make a difference to our lives. A device that is not only beautiful but one that combines essential well-being elements into a small compact cube that fits seamlessly into almost any space.
Beacon continually monitors your room’s environment so you’re always aware of the air’s quality. Empowering you to take action to ensure that room conditions are safe or ideal. It monitors the following:
You can check the status of your room by looking at the colour of the Beacon Logo or remotely through the Beacon app. Notifications will be sent to your phone if Beacon detects a problem with a recommendation of how to take care of it.
Beacon’s powerful, customisable LED light is specifically designed to emulate the different natural light colours of the day and match your body’s rhythm:
- Wake up naturally with your personalised sunrise
- Relax or prepare for sleep with sunset-like lighting
- Long-life energy efficient LED technology
- Create custom modes for different times of day and activities
We have collaborated with Dr. Ir. Stéphane Pigeon, the passionate sound professional behind myNoise.net for the ultimate Beacon experience. We have pre-loaded a collection of uncompressed, beautiful nature sounds and ambient noises to help create your perfect environment – particularly when waking or falling asleep.
The sounds are particularly useful in masking unwanted noises within your immediate environment and aid those who suffer from tinnitus.
We offer shipping to a wide selection of countries. Please check your shipping rate on the checkout menu while backing the project. If you would like a Beacon and your country is not covered please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
We are thrilled to have a functional prototype. Please check out some of the key features in the demo videos below:
Track the Beacon journey from desk light idea to design to functional prototypes:
We spent nearly two years revising the design. We worked with Emmett Green who has worked with us on other projects. His creative ideas helped us create a product that we believe is beautiful, easy to use and challenges the way we look at lighting and smart home products.
It all started nearly two years ago when we were working on a new commercial lighting and sensor offering that was focused on improving productivity in the workplace. We realised that the environmental factors of air, light and sound is a problem far wider and impacting than just commercial environments. Most of us spend more than 90% of our lives indoors, so we should consider that the environmental impact on our wellbeing starts in our own homes. Our wellbeing affects all of us throughout the entire day, changing our mood and how we interact with people – good or bad. It starts from how we wake up, the mood we are in through the day and to how we go to sleep and get a good night’s rest. So we are on a mission to help people be better, live better and enjoy life more by having a beautifully designed cube that people find easy to use and that is useful every day. Over the last two years we have been working hard through countless design aspects to get the form right, reviewed hundreds of LED lighting technologies, collaborated with sound experts, built prototypes and carried out hundreds of marketing surveys. We are excited about the very positive feedback and support we have had to bring Beacon to light!
Risks and challenges
We believe in open and honest communication. The only way we can bring the Beacon project to life is with your support and therefore we want to discuss the risks and challenges in detail and ensure that our backers understand the associated risks and complexities of building a new project right from the start.
Having built and shipped lighting and sensor hardware products before, we are familiar with typical problems that arise that could cause issues and delays. We have developed a plan for manufacturing in Asia with an experienced and reliable partner. We have taken best estimates for delivery and added contingency into our timeline for unforeseen things that may come up. We can't predict everything that may arise, however we wanted to go through some of the more likely risks. There could be more that we have not covered but we have tried to look at the more obvious ones:
We’re in the fortunate position of having many years of working with numerous manufacturing companies. Therefore, we understand the risks that can occur in the production process. During the pre-production process we expect there will be changes that may impact timescales so we have built in some extra time.
One challenge we have considered is shipping the Beacons to different parts of the world so we have found some strong third-party logistics partners, all of whom have crowdfunding expertise.
For Beacon, to date we have used 3D printing for the inner parts and will need hard tooling for these parts when we go to full production for these parts of Beacon. So to account for possible adjustments and errors we have built in additional time. Tooling will also be happening around holiday season, which means factories may wind down production until after the holidays which could add to production time. We’ve already included buffer time to take this into account.
Supply chain logistics:
If our manufacturing partner requires specific components to build a PCB (for example), it is possible that the factory may run low on parts or have long lead times for their inventory. This can hold up assembly, as you may imagine, since we can’t build a product if pieces are missing. Sometimes market forces change and can affect the supply of various components.
We pledge to keep our backers well-informed in a timely manner through the whole process and do everything we can to deliver Beacon to you as we have planned.
