Samurai Dice (Canceled)
A fast-paced dice-and-card game with RPG mechanics that features gorgeous artwork and outstanding production values.
Samurai Dice is a fun game that is about as simple to learn as Yahtzee, Farkle or Shut the Box. Despite its simplicity this product features strategic depth and tactical choices.
This game is for 1 or 2 players, but you an get a bigger group going with multiple boxes. It's designed for players 10 years and older. Each game takes between 10 and 20 minutes to play.
So far we've released 3 free files during this campaign, with more on the way!
Here's an informative review from blogger Daniel Yocom.
Game Rules and Free Playtest File
You can download the print-and-play game file at this link to play for yourself. The basic rule is that you roll five dice each turn, one of which is red, one is blue and the other three are white. The blue die represents your Hero, and you want it to roll equal to or higher than the white dice in order to do more damage to your Enemy. If the blue die is lower than the red die your enemy gets to activate their deadly ability.
If you manage to have at least one of your characters survive against the villains, you win the game!
Samurai Dice is a spinoff from my RPG, Kaigaku, which I previously funded and released via Kickstarter. This project is a new era for the world of Kaigaku, as we're upgrading the art and production values.
The base set features the ronin Hikaru, the last survivor of the disgraced Sugiyama clan, as he tracks down the man responsible for destroying his family.
When I designed Samurai Dice I did it according to a set of principles:
-The rules have to be simple enough to learn in 10 minutes
-Every session has to tell a story
-The game has to be fast enough to play in minutes, but offer strategic choices
As you play through the game your characters level up with each Enemy that they defeat. They might heal and become stronger, learn to do more damage or take a powerful item from their fallen foe.
Each character has two abilities that do extra damage, heal allies, prevent damage or otherwise affect the game. If you want to use an ability you have to choose which of the Hero's abilities to activate, and you can only use it once per game.
What's in the Box?
There are two versions of Samurai Dice. The first is Basic Edition, which comes with everything that one or two people need to play. This includes eight Heroes, eight Enemies, dice and a dry erase marker for keeping track of health and leveling. You can expand the game with Story Edition, for deeper, but still fast-paced play.
Story Edition introduces two decks of cards, Strife and Story, that you can use to hamper your opponent or boost your own team. It also comes with Faction cards, which give bonuses to aligned Heroes. The final card type is Scenario, which presents a unique initial challenge and a bonus for defeating that challenge, or even an alternate win condition.
At $5,000 dollars we have what we need to cover art, production, miscellaneous expenses and the time spent on development If we get to that level, there's plenty more to offer.
$10,000: Extra Cards and Factions: The basic game gets four new Heroes and four new Enemies so you can enjoy more variety for your team. Story Edition includes the new characters and also comes with a new Faction card and an additional Scenario.
These new characters represent two more ronin and two more members of the Toyama clan, and the new Toyama Faction and Scenario tell a brand new story.
$15,000: Master Hoshi's Tournament Pack: At this level we make Master Hoshi's Tournament available. Enjoy a new Faction, 4 new Heroes and 5 Villains, including Hoshi, the insane master of Fu, or negative energy.
The scenario in this pack takes you through an underground martial arts tournament where you can prove yourself the most powerful warrior in the land.
$20,000: Miura's Castle Deck: This stretch goal is Miura's Castle, a deck of rooms and encounters that lets you take your Samurai Dice characters on a dungeon crawl. You can also use Miura's Castle as an adventure generator for tabletop RPGs!
$30,000: Clan Vs.: We produce the first pack that showcases two of Kaigaku's clans, which each come with a Faction and a set of Heroes and Enemies. Jumpstart your team with this pack.
$40,000: Clan Vs II: We make a second Clan Vs. pack.
$50,000: Second Expansion Deck: We produce the Tales deck. This pack includes many Strife and Story cards that you can use to customize your decks for casual solo, group or even tournament play.
Higher: Locked for now!
Risks and challenges
The base game is completely done, minus some of the art. As pieces come in I simply have to plug the picture into my layout file and then upload them to the manufacturer.
The Story Edition is nearly finished. I should have it written up, edited and laid out within the first week of the campaign.
I don't have the expansion decks made up yet, as we're going to choose which ones people want unlocked s the first stretch goal when we get closer to unlocking them. As some of the high-level reward tiers might get input into the decks, I don't want to paint myself into a corner or restrict your choices. I have the basic outline for each deck written up, though, as a starting point.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
