The Ruined Kingdom is an adventure campaign for my previous Kickstarter project, the Kaigaku RPG. It's an Asian-inspired story of samurai journeying across the dangerous plains of Kherin and deserts of Achaem to reach the dying city of Tianshi. If they prove themselves brave and resourceful enough the players can save the world from a growing horde of mutant beasts. As always, there's a catch in that Tianshi is home to many powerful artifacts and devices, and emissaries of other nations want to get their hands on these weapons before you do. The adventure is a companion to Kaigaku, and requires that book or others to play. See "The Rules" below for more details.
I'm running this campaign as part of Kickstarter's 7-day challenge to create something in March of 2017. I need funding to get art, including a map from genius illustrator Guillaume Tavernier. Guillaume's already contributed to Kaigaku; you can find his gorgeous geisha house map in the first issue of the Kaigaku Chronicle, the official magazine of the game.
Beyond the adventure and story outline, this book is going to have a section filled with various monsters to fight (and some to befriend!) while you travel the world. It's also the first look at three new cultures from the world of Kaigaku, with brand new options for PCs so GMs and players alike can benefit from it.
Do you want to be a dreaded Achaem Hashishin? A powerful Kherin Steppe Rider? A wise Tianjin Master? You can play all of these and more in The Ruined Kingdom!
Don't have Kaigaku? That's not a problem. The base game (minus art, layout and some mechanics and setting info) is free here and if you back at the Bandwagon level or higher you get an at-cost print copy of the Premium Edition (pretty art, expanded rules and setting, professional layout and editing) upon wrapping the campaign.
This adventure is going to be compatible with multiple OSR rule sets, including White Hack, Stars Without Number and more. Depending on how the campaign funds we might get to include rules that are compatible with games such as Pathfinder or 5E.
What do the Funds Do?
They get you art! The books are laid out well and feature (in my biased opinion) some fantastic rules, world development, story hooks and overall design. What I can't do for myself is create art. I have some pieces ready and waiting, but I want to commission beautiful maps by Guillaume to make The Ruined Kingdom even richer and more immersive.
We can get The Ruined Kingdom made well at the initial funding goal. I want to make it as fantastic as can be, and to fund further content.
$1,500: Funded! We get to make the book!
$2,500: More Art. We get another couple maps from Guillaume to liven up the book! This means several more pages of content, specifically detailing portions of Achaem and Kherin society.
$3,000: WhiteBox Conversion. At this level we produce a new version of the premium core book for WhiteBox. That means full game rules, character classes and the whole shebang. Do you play White Star? White Lies? Operation WhiteBox? Now you'll be able to do crossovers!
$8,000: Clan Vs. Books. If we can make this astonishing amount I'll be able to produce the first book in the Clans Vs. series. Each book features new ryu, castles and towns, NPCs, rich history and adventure hooks and outlines for two rival clans. Should we unlock this reward everyone who backs at the second level or higher gets to vote on which set of two clans gets written up!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk of this campaign is that I'll get run over by a bus before everything gets finished. I'm committed to getting The Ruined Kingdom done in the best way possible, and I'm setting up a cloud-based document and dropbox collection with any files, art sources and all that jazz so that if something happens to me I can leave everything in capable hands.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
